So I finally did it. I managed to get everything organised and actually managed to arrive in Switzerland, after much nail biting as to whether I would be actually be accepted into Albert-Ludwigs University in Freiburg (the reason I’m in Europe in the first place) and as to whether I would be insured or whether I’d have to pay for the excess 7kilos I had (fortunately I didn’t, at least not for the first leg of my trip!). So it wasn’t until I was actually on the plane that I could breathe a sigh of relief...but even then it was short lived. I had three different flights to catch to get to my destination: Zürich, Switzerland. Malaysia Airlines from Perth to Kuala Lumpur, then a connecting Malaysia Airlines flight to Frankfurt, Germany, then a completely different, ... read more

Isn't that the magic of travelling when you're planning to go somewhere and you end up somewhere completely different??? Well, my initial destination was Chamonix and I even made it there. Believe it or not I EVEN foudn a place to stay (that's not in my car!!). The bad news were that I litteraly could touch the clouds and it was pissing down with rain. So guess what that meant for a climb up those mountains around town.... Consequently it didn't take too long and I sat down examining the map of Switzerland and the weatherforecast simultaniously. I looked at the route I was going to take north, closed my eyes and pointed on any spot that happened to be in my finger's way. If it was close enough to my proposed route north I double ... read more

Switzerland Sucks. No wonder they have the largest suicide rate. Hell, I wanted to commit suicide when I was there! I went to Geneva, Luzern, and got tired of Switzerland (it didnt hold a candle to any of the other countries I have visited) so I decided to get the hell out of dodge. I booked a flight to Greece from Milan, Italy. How to get to Milan? Well, 350+ Swiss Franks (I told you to pull out your wallet) so I thought, "hell no!" and set off to hitch-hike to Milan. A wonderful gentleman dropped me off in a small town on the border of Italy, and I decided to stay for the night. the bus ride the next day to Milano would only be 26 Swiss Franks. (Grampy... you taught me well!!) Do the ... read more

Incredible is the only word I can think of to describe the day we had today. Yesterday, we were given the optional extras talk, and have decided on doing all bar 5 of the extra activities…there are just too many wonderful things to see and do! Today, we made the most of our two chosen extras, starting with a journey up Mount Pilatus. It’s peak is said to look like the face of Pontus Pilot, from biblical times. The early start was worth it today, as we missed all the traffic, and arrived a bit too early for our train ride up the 7000 foot mountain. I wouldn’t exactly call it a train - it is more a carriage, operated on a cog-wheel system. It is unbelievably steep - a 48 percent gradient! It is the ... read more

Yes, the wheels on our bus went round and round, all day long. We did some major driving today to get to Lucerne, a fabulous town in Switzerland. Thankfully, we had a few stops along the way to break the trip up. We left our little hotel in Wiesbaden fairly early in the morning - 7:15am…I am afraid these early starts will be fairly commonplace on our tour. No more sleeping in till 9am. Our first stop was a couple of hours later in Heidelberg - still part of Germany - and were able to stretch our legs. The castle here is right up on a hill above the city, looking over a small town square. Like most places in Europe, it looks like it is straight out of a postcard. Jon gave us the low-down ... read more

My honeymoon with the Interlaken youth hostel came to a quick end last night. After I made my blog entry (if it wasn't obvious, I was kinda hosed at the time ...) when a bunch of frat boys and their girlfriends stormed into my dorm room early in the morning and blabbed for another hour. Moved on from Interlaken to Gimmelwald, which was the plan all along and was a good move. Gimmelwald is a mountain "village" of about 150 people at about 4,000' in the Alps. What I said yesterday about Western Washington comparing to the Alps .... I was wrong. Its not even close. The amount of vertical relief here is beyond compare. The village obviously relies on tourism, but its not anywhere near as gaudy as Interlaken, although the prices of everything just ... read more

Alright. This isn't fair. Every country has a different keyboard. Dammit. "Alt-Gr"+2 tp get a "@" sign? Ridiculous ... What a difference a day makes. I woke up, with no Eurail pass and had to get to Interlaken, Switzerland as that was where my lodging reservations were made. Pass showed up early in the morning, was able to make my reseravations forthe train, and made it to Interlaken easily. From the train, Europe seems to have skipped the whole "exburbs" and "McMansions" boom, which was refreshing to see. I get the feeling that if these countries were under American control, everything would have been developed into endless sprawl by now. For whatever reason Switzerland was able to avoid it, I´m thankful. Interlaken rocks. I'm moving here. Interlaken is in the heart of the alps and is ... read more

My night train arrived in Zurich Switzerland at like 8:00. The day before Zurich had a big party called The Street Parade. From reading about it online it sounds like a big rave type thing. But when I arrived in Zurich, you could definately see in peoples faces that they had a great night. I took an early train to Interlacken, Switzerland, which is at the base of the swiss alps. I couldn't get into my room until later so locked up my bag and headed out to see the city. As I was walking thoward the city, the hostel was just outside of it, all you could see where mountains. It was a beautiful site. They even have these little faucets all over the city that constantly flow with fresh mountain water. This place was ... read more
