Climbing BlumlisalpBlumlisalp is "the mountain" of Kandersteg - I can see it from the window at work, from my bedroom window, from the belcony - it's like the Queen of the village, always in view where ever you are. The views from the top are fabulous - probably the best view of Lake Oeschinsee I've ever seen - I've now looked down on the lake from almost every angle & height possible, bar a parachute! We were very lucky with the weather - finally managing to head up there together after putting days aside for it 4 times this summer (the weather was always bad on my days off!). The conditions were perfect - it was a still, wind-free, gorgeous Autumn day. I sprung out of bed at 4.30am (nothing like something to remind me of ... read more

Wir ... read more

Interlaken, Switzerland - 2/9-5/9/07 We arrived into Interlaken on an overnight train from Salzburg. The overnight train was an experience on its own. We had two beds in a couchette reserved and found the train to be chocker full of sleeping bodies including our couchette as the train departed Budapest many hours before. Trying to find your bunk and work out where everything is in a couchette in the dark was a mission. And just our luck, our bunks were the top ones, a good 6-7 foot off the floor, narrow beds with no railing. Knowing my luck I would roll over and hit the deck ( I held onto the side of the bed the whole night). After a 5 hour semi sleep, we were woken at 6am as we cruised into Zurich to change ... read more

Rather than go back to Zurich to catch the train to Milan we decided we would instead head out to Lucern which was also nearby. Lucern also has a large lake and a river and two old medieval wooden roofed bridges which cross the river with old paintings above it. Lucern also has some remaining fortifications located above the river which we went for a short walk along before walking back to the station to catch the train to Milan.... read more

Switzerland was a breath of fresh air, quite literally. The difference in the quality of the air was quite noticeable almost as soon as we crossed the border on Monday morning- the scenery from the train (when you're not in a tunnel) is picture postcard, and arriving in Lucerne you immediately felt safe - unfortunately you also felt quite damp as it started to rain almost as soon as we arrived. Lucern is quite a pretty place and so well sign posted you would have to work really hard to get lost there! We were lucky enough to stay in an authentic Vietnamese Swiss Hotel....which meant the smells wafting up out of the kitchen even before breakfast had you thinking about Peking Duck for lunch before you'd even had your muesli. Our plan for Lucern was to venture ... read more

The train ride from Munich into Zurich was another comfortable and pleasent trip typical of all our experiences on German trains. However, when we went to eat at the on-board dining car we found the prices of the meals to be unusually expensive which was a sign of things to come in Switzerland. When we went to prebook our accommodation for Zurich we found everything to be very expenisve. Oddly we found there to be no cheaper hostel type places in the city centre, only luxury hotels. This may have something to do with Zurich being a major financial centre rather than a destination for budget travellers. Anyhow, eventually we settled for a cheapish hotel (Hotel Ibis) located about 20km from the city centre opposite a train station at Baar. Costs were fairly easy to work ... read more

BeerWorking behind a bar is starting to wear thin - working the beer tap is no longer a challenge (haha) and I may as well have been a chain smoker for the last 2 1/2 months! I have woken up twice in the middle of the night on days off work fumbling around for the door thinking I've forgotten somebodies beer...then finding myself wrapped up in the curtain freaking out because I think I'm at work not dressed. When will I ever grow out of weird sleep walking? Janine came to visit for 1 week around a month ago and apparently I've been sleep talking too. In German. About beer and smoking! "Ich will deine bier bringen" and "nicht rauchen!" I would never have thought the day would come when those two things would be taking ... read more
