Following the First World War, the closely related Czechs and Slovaks of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire merged to form Czechoslovakia. During the interwar years, the new country's leaders were frequently preoccupied with meeting the demands of other ethnic minorities within the republic, most notably the Sudeten Germans and the Ruthenians (Ukrainians). After World War II, a truncated Czechoslovakia fell within the Soviet sphere of influence. In 1968, an invasion by Warsaw Pact troops ended the efforts of the country's leaders to liberalize Communist party rule and create "socialism with a human face." Anti-Soviet demonstrations the following year ushered in a period of harsh repression. With the collapse of Soviet authority in 1989, Czechoslovakia regained its freedom through a peaceful "Velvet Revolution." On 1 January 1993, the country underwent a "velvet divorce" into its two national components, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Czech Republic joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. my first train experience
Kutna Hora: The Bone Church and Silver Mine Memoirs So the original plan for that particular weekend was to go to Cesky Krumlof, but 2 days before I couldn’t get a ticket via bus or train there because of the huge yearly festival that was going on in Krumlof, so I decided then and there at the train station to change my plans and go to Kutna Hora. All I really knew about it was that there was supposed a to be a famous bone church and there was also a silver mine I could tour, so I decided, why not? [View Full Entry]

Short entry to inform all my Czech friends who wax lyrical about Karlštejn that I have ticked it off my list. Me and my flatmate Anne-Sophie did a day trip today, did the tour, ate ice cream, went for a short wander and came back. It was a nice day, but there's really nothing more to write about. My dorm! Slightly soviet-looking...
It’s been a while since I’ve updated, so I suppose I should start out by talking about the opera that I apparently forgot to write about. Last Tuesday a fair-sized group of us went to an opera in the city. I can’t remember the name of the theatre we went to (I’m not sure I ever knew it, to be honest), but tickets were only about 40 crowns. For a price like that, the seats weren’t ideal, but we could still hear. We saw “The Marriage of Figaro,” which was very entertaining, but I didn’t follow quite as well as I [View Full Entry]

The Czech for please is easy, prosim, the Czech for thank-you seems to elude me: dekuji. Everytime I say it, the word just sounds more and more wrong each time. That first sound d'ye with more emphasis on the ye is so challenging for me, and the storekeepers must scratch their heads wondering what I am saying. But I keep trying, and once in a while it sounds somewhat like it should. Some other Czech words are a bit like Russian so that helps me a little. But it's a tough language for me. Prague is a photogenic city, with lots [View Full Entry]

Unikatne pieskovcove utvary v obci Tisa nedaleko Usti nad Labem.
Ahoj.Minuly vikend som sa vybral konecne do Ceskeho Svycarska - uz som to dlho planoval.V sobotu som rano som siel vlakom do Usti nad Labem a odtial busom do dedinky Tisa - prvej zastavky.

Quite predictably, I prefer the oldschool slam door trains to these modern ones with their god damn annoying american accent announcements ("Veen soodbanhaaarf!")
Břeclav (pronounced "brzhetslaf" by czech people and "breklavv" by american tourists changing trains from australia to crack-o) is like the Czech Republic's answer to Crewe, except with moar wine and flat. The town has three especially noticeable features: the first is the railway, being a huge international rail junction situated next to the borders with Austria and Slovakia, so any train going from or through the Czech Republic to Bratislava (and beyond to Hungary and ex-yu) or to Vienna comes through here. The second is, as mentioned, wine - the whole district is just flat, and most of [View Full Entry]

I am currently distraught. This has nothing to do with Prague, school, or really anything that should logically have any bearing on my life. But one of my favorite Penguins defensemen just signed with LA. I might have cried a little bit. Also, it really sucks to be on another continent when major things are happening in the NHL because I get this information at about two in the morning. Yesterday we went to a farm in Zihle, which I’m pretty sure is west of Prague but I could be wrong. On our way there we drove through a town named [View Full Entry]

Well, I have finally found a smell worse than the pee-soaked stations… Mustek station in Prague smells like puke. At first I thought ‘man, what bad timing for it to smell this way…’ but no, it’s permanent. I had the misfortune of using the station once yesterday, and then 3x today. Ew. Anyway, on with my day. The plan was to do that 6hr day tour followed by the ghost tour… yeah, didn’t happen. ‘Prague Walks’ can kiss my bum. I show up and the guy is too busy talking with a girl on a segway to even notice I’m there. [View Full Entry]
