Following the First World War, the closely related Czechs and Slovaks of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire merged to form Czechoslovakia. During the interwar years, the new country's leaders were frequently preoccupied with meeting the demands of other ethnic minorities within the republic, most notably the Sudeten Germans and the Ruthenians (Ukrainians). After World War II, a truncated Czechoslovakia fell within the Soviet sphere of influence. In 1968, an invasion by Warsaw Pact troops ended the efforts of the country's leaders to liberalize Communist party rule and create "socialism with a human face." Anti-Soviet demonstrations the following year ushered in a period of harsh repression. With the collapse of Soviet authority in 1989, Czechoslovakia regained its freedom through a peaceful "Velvet Revolution." On 1 January 1993, the country underwent a "velvet divorce" into its two national components, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Czech Republic joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. Last night was our opening ceremony, I guess you could call it. We went over to the restaurant we’ve been eating at on campus at seven and were introduced to the faculty. Then Dr. Johnson and the Resident Director from Mizzou talked a bit, and all of the students introduced themselves (both American and Czech…which was nice because none of us could remember some of their names). Once we were welcomed everyone had a shot of…well, I honestly have no idea what it was, but it burned and I thought it tasted like cinnamon and peppermint. Would have been a [View Full Entry]

The Prague Zoo, Skoda tour, Laterna Magicka, and tram calamities So, I'm a bit behind in my blogs, here's a summary on what's happened the last week. 1) Visited the Prage Zoo, which was the most beautiful zoo I've ever scene. With rolling hills and real-life simulations of the animals' natural habitats (like the Brazillian jungle and the Africa saranghetti), it really was an amazing experience, plus the weather was beautiful. There's is a mix of free roaming animals and one's in exhibits, so the ones that are hard to catch sights off free roaming can easily be vi [View Full Entry]

I planned to have a quite day, it didn’t quiet work out like that. I got out of bed and decided that I have to send some stuff home which I have been meaning to do for quite sometime. I translated a few things I would have to ask at the post office in to Czech and then I set out with my bag full of crap to be sent off and a smile on my face. I stepped outside and the weather was looking unforgiving…again. I went to the closest shop to find a box to put my stuff in [View Full Entry]

Amazing idea!
The cool band i saw.

The bus left for Terezin at 10am, I was up at 9am and out the door by 9:15. I ran to the train, to the bus information, then to the bus platform. I sat as I believed I deserved the rest. The sky looked very dark and cruel, yesterday had been an amazingly beautiful day. The day I pick for a day trip it had to be raining, it started raining as I got on the bus but the rest of the day it only drizzled on and off . The bus dropped us off at around 11am in what felt [View Full Entry]

As the title states today was uneventful. I went to the station and searched for the ticket booth to book my ticket to Terezin for tomorrow, 4 information booths and a lot of walking later i found it tucked away. I then went back to the hostel ate some lunch, relaxed and spoke to Steph before she goes to Bali on the weekend. I then thought it was time to enjoy the gorgeous day at hand. I picked the Botanical garden on the map, what a crock of shit. The garden was awful (look at the photos), it was just some [View Full Entry]

Hey whats up guys, I finally made it to Prague. Things are so cool here, and ridiculously cheep. Our house is cool but very basic. We are located in Prague 1 literally 2 blocks from old town square on 6 Veleslavinova. Look it up! Mike and Matt are coming to visit Friday and we are going to do the underground pub crawl. We haven't really started school yet, just a bunch of admin stuff. Ill keep you posted. Hope all is well with yall, and I will have more to post as we do more stuff. [View Full Entry]

Prague is one of the most enchanting cities I have come across. The buildings are so incredibly stunning that one is left slack jawed and staring. Needless to say it is not difficult to spot a tourist when wandering the streets. I arrived here two nights ago with my two new friends Bekah and Cassandra whom I met in Amsterdam and affectionately call “The Mississippis”. Our friend Time, whom we met in Berlin also came to Prague via motorcycle and we all met up and spent a great two days together. For the most part travelers that have come together to [View Full Entry]

Toget mellem Berlin og Prag
Toget mellem Berlin og Prag
Her sidder vi i togets cafe.
