Following the First World War, the closely related Czechs and Slovaks of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire merged to form Czechoslovakia. During the interwar years, the new country's leaders were frequently preoccupied with meeting the demands of other ethnic minorities within the republic, most notably the Sudeten Germans and the Ruthenians (Ukrainians). After World War II, a truncated Czechoslovakia fell within the Soviet sphere of influence. In 1968, an invasion by Warsaw Pact troops ended the efforts of the country's leaders to liberalize Communist party rule and create "socialism with a human face." Anti-Soviet demonstrations the following year ushered in a period of harsh repression. With the collapse of Soviet authority in 1989, Czechoslovakia regained its freedom through a peaceful "Velvet Revolution." On 1 January 1993, the country underwent a "velvet divorce" into its two national components, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Czech Republic joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. Me and the Dancing Houses
Me and the Dancing Houses
Also called Fred and Ginger
Hi Everybody! In the last few days I have seen the Dancing House, the Prague Castle, the Kriski fountain, and I took a day trip to Kutna Hora to see the bone church. Because Prague was largely undamaged in WWII many of their architectual marvels still exist. Prague Castle is considered the largest ancient castle in the world. It has existed in some form since the 10th century. The highlight of Prague Castle is the St. Vitas Cathedral which was started in 1344 and not finished until 1929. Yes, 1929. It took them over 600 years to complete the cathedral. They [View Full Entry]

So I’ve been home for almost a week now and I’m finally getting around to finishing the last few days of our blog. We didn’t do too much (again, we were worn out) so they should be quick… Monday July 6 Today, after breakfast Viv went back into the room to go back to sleep and/or watch movies on the computer. I had decided to use this time to check out the Jewish Quarter, supposedly one of the best in Europe. So I ventured out by myself and headed to the Maisel Synagogue first. Here I bought my “museum pass” which [View Full Entry]

Hi Everyone, In the last two days in Prague I have wandered around lost, taken a free walking tour, and visited the Jewish Museum. Prague and the Czech Republic in general has undergone many changes in the last century. They went from Democracy at the end of WWI to Nazi occupation to Communist rule finally to being their own country again. Capitalism is alive and well in Prague. The are enough shopping centers, souvenir stands, and McDonald's to make any western tourist happy. As long as you stay away from the tourist centers the prices are about the equivalent to US [View Full Entry]

One exam down. Europe » Czech Republic » Prague
Today we had our Czech Language exam. It wasn’t too bad, but I guess I won’t find out how I did for a while. It’s nice to have at least one exam down. We also had a lecture on Czech-Slovak relations, which I found very interesting but the weekend caught up with me and I couldn’t stay awake. I was somewhat upset about that because I really did want to hear what our lecturer had to say. Following the Czech-Slovak lecture we had an American businessman tell us about doing business in the Czech Republic, and also internet commerce. I didn’t [View Full Entry]

We went to Karlovy Vary today. Karlovy Vary (also known as Carlsbad) is a spa town, and has various springs whose waters are reputed to have healing powers. It’s a gorgeous town, really, mostly nestled in a little valley. There’s a pretty large Russian population there (I think Vlasta said over half of the property is owned by Russians), so everything was written in Czech and Russian, as opposed to the Czech and English of Prague. I would have appreciated a little more time there, but I suppose I’ll get to that later. The first stop in Karlovy Vary was the [View Full Entry]

Two months officially. Wow doesnt feel like its been that long at all. This past month has FLOWn by. Especially in Denmark working away. That was probably the best experience for me so far. 15 Countries. Not bad at all. Woke up a bit early suprisingly fresh by the hordes of other people around. My train was due in at 640 so I had to make sure I was prepared for the worst like last time. Again no info on the board about Prague. OR Praha they call it. No one around either to ask about this. SO I went around [View Full Entry]

Sunday July 5 Breakfast at our hotel here in Praha is amazing—I might even like it better than Berlin. They have pastries, breads, cheeses, cold meats, fruit, the equivalent of some sort of egg salad, ham (the ham is good), an egg noodle dish, coffee, juice…After breakfast, we did a whole lot of nothing. I updated my blog, messed around on the internet, Viv took another nap, and just basically took it easy. We went out for lunch (we’ve been eating so much) in Hradčany (the castle district). We shared a very good chicken noodle soup. Viv had beef goulash with [View Full Entry]

Saturday July 4 HAPPY BIRTHDAY, AMERICA! We woke up early this morning so we could pack all our stuff. After another quick breakfast, we rushed out the door to catch the bus, to catch the train to the main train station (Hauptbahnof). We got there with 15 minutes to spare. When the train arrived, we leisurely made our way on to the coach and we’re impressed with how comfortable and spacious the seats looked. Unfortunately, little did we know that we were actually in 1st class…woops. Kind of embarrassing. We hauled our luggage back four cars to our real seats, and [View Full Entry]

We had our homestays this weekend. Heather and I stayed with Vaclav. We were originally supposed to stay with one of the girls (I honestly could not figure out who she was though), but she got sick. So we could have gone with either Vaclav or Martin, and Nick would have gone with the other. We flipped a coin and ended up with Vaclav. It was interesting to go with him because we ended up going to two (three if you count the train station) different villages because his parents are divorced and live in different places. I think I learned [View Full Entry]
