Following the First World War, the closely related Czechs and Slovaks of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire merged to form Czechoslovakia. During the interwar years, the new country's leaders were frequently preoccupied with meeting the demands of other ethnic minorities within the republic, most notably the Sudeten Germans and the Ruthenians (Ukrainians). After World War II, a truncated Czechoslovakia fell within the Soviet sphere of influence. In 1968, an invasion by Warsaw Pact troops ended the efforts of the country's leaders to liberalize Communist party rule and create "socialism with a human face." Anti-Soviet demonstrations the following year ushered in a period of harsh repression. With the collapse of Soviet authority in 1989, Czechoslovakia regained its freedom through a peaceful "Velvet Revolution." On 1 January 1993, the country underwent a "velvet divorce" into its two national components, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Czech Republic joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. Classes again today. We started out with Dr. Boučkova and economics. It was actually a lot more interesting than I originally thought it would be. I took more notes during her lecture than I did for all of yesterday’s combined. After economics, we had Peroutková and Czech language again. We learned some phrases and basic questions. It was fun. I really like Czech, even if it has some of the hardest words I’ve ever tried to pronounce. Following Czech was Voráček with Czech People and Land. He’s a very interesting lecturer. He’s pretty animated, so eve [View Full Entry]

Well we're not in Prague anymore but in Vienna (I (SB) wanted to put the czech republic on the travel map). The day started well, we arrived only 2.5 hrs late after an interesting night on a night train witzh a very scary guard. The people in our carriage arrived, cried and left which made us feel so special. Prague however was very pretty, if a little damp. We decided we wanted to go to Prague Castle which apparently is lovely. We found it, but we couldnt find a way *into* it! Once we did we did we saw the changing [View Full Entry]

Mary Anne -Prague, Czech Republic Last two days of our three week tour of four countries. We took the train from Vienna to Prague and found that our hotel accommodations were just a little bit less then perfect. After being picked up from the train station by bus we were taken to our hotel in a questionable neighborhood. Our room was the attic of the hotel. There were no wall windows only ceiling windows. I felt like maybe I was Anne Frank. It was the 4th floor and that means not 4 sets of stairs but 8 sets. They say what [View Full Entry]

"Last Bullet" of WWII
I was in South Bohemia for nearly all of today. We left at 7:30 this morning for the brewery at České Budějovice about 200 miles to the south. Last night some of the group went to The Pub, so they were a bit late getting to the bus. They were also pretty soundly harassed by the Czech students, who were just as chipper as ever. A few miles outside of Prague (by my estimate, but keep in mind I’m not exactly sure where Prague ends…) there’s a bridge to nowhere spanning the river. Professor Voráček told us yesterday that it was [View Full Entry]

What up Yall, So I just got through the first weekend in Prague and got to spend it with Mika and Matt. 3 words, so much fun. Thursday my roommates and I started wandering around Prague finding all the major land marks in Prague 1 for our first homework assignment. There is so much history and insane stories about how all the buildings were built. For instance the apartment complex where we are living was build 600 years ago, yea scary, but don't worry its safe. Friday I waited for Mike and Matt to get here. We just hung out and [View Full Entry]

Here's my bed in the dormitory. I have a few pictures of the room, I'll have to show everybody when I get home.
I just got my internet working today, so I need to post my entry from the weekend covering my flights and first day. Here goes! Today is my first full day in Prague. I woke up at five (after going to bed around one last night when we got back from the museum, but I’ll talk about that later) with the sun absolutely beaming through the windows. I immediately thought my alarm didn’t go off and it was around 8:30 or 9. I had no idea the sun rises so early here! I went back to sleep and woke up again [View Full Entry]

Yesterday morning I stepped off my favourite scenic train line in the Czech Republic (the one that follows the Vltava and the Labe north of Prague) in a small town called Bohušovice nad Ohří, which is a kilometer south of Terezín, a town used as a Jewish ghetto during the second world war which had since been converted into a memorial, with various sites around the town open to visitors. It was one of those trips I would not recommend to anyone insecure about death, or emotionally fragile, because these things really can mess with your head. As I did this [View Full Entry]

Last night was our opening ceremony, I guess you could call it. We went over to the restaurant we’ve been eating at on campus at seven and were introduced to the faculty. Then Dr. Johnson and the Resident Director from Mizzou talked a bit, and all of the students introduced themselves (both American and Czech…which was nice because none of us could remember some of their names). Once we were welcomed everyone had a shot of…well, I honestly have no idea what it was, but it burned and I thought it tasted like cinnamon and peppermint. Would have been a [View Full Entry]
