Following the First World War, the closely related Czechs and Slovaks of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire merged to form Czechoslovakia. During the interwar years, the new country's leaders were frequently preoccupied with meeting the demands of other ethnic minorities within the republic, most notably the Sudeten Germans and the Ruthenians (Ukrainians). After World War II, a truncated Czechoslovakia fell within the Soviet sphere of influence. In 1968, an invasion by Warsaw Pact troops ended the efforts of the country's leaders to liberalize Communist party rule and create "socialism with a human face." Anti-Soviet demonstrations the following year ushered in a period of harsh repression. With the collapse of Soviet authority in 1989, Czechoslovakia regained its freedom through a peaceful "Velvet Revolution." On 1 January 1993, the country underwent a "velvet divorce" into its two national components, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Czech Republic joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. Sigh, a second year in a row that I miss Canada Day in Ottawa. But that’s ok. Today I enjoyed the ability to sleep in for once (yay for 2 nights in a hotel!) and then I headed out to Kutna Hora, an hour east of Prague. I went to the bus station first to confirm my ticket to Frankfurt for tomorrow night (minor detail considering I have a flight later that day), and then I trekked back to the train station. Again, for an area that sees a considerable amount of tourists, I’m surprised no one I came across understood [View Full Entry]

Crossing over to "Lesser Town" from "New Town"
We officially have landed in Eastern Europe, starting out in Prague, Czech Republic. Our plane from Belgium got in around 5pm and after finding our hostal we made our way to a restaurant to taste the fine Czech cuisine. Dumplings, pork, sauerkraut, beef goulash and apple strudel.... just what our stomachs were searching for. After eating we made our way to the main downtown square which was jam packed for the local Prague music fest. Similar to Aquafest, we joined in the fun and sampled MORE food from the stands and listened to the live music. Andy can't resist the local [View Full Entry]

Making the climb

Well, last night was interesting. After my bratwurst I metro’d down to the soccer stadium to catch the bus to Prague. I was super not looking forward to this b/c it’s in the middle of nowhere. I get into the station and 4 drunk teenagers show up and start heckling a group of Asians. (Definitely reminded me of Wonderland haha, who wears short shortsssss?) This went on for about 5min before the Asians angrily yelled at them in German to what I can only assume meant “eff off”. I like their ticket checking system here in Munich, much more effective [View Full Entry]

Czech Paradise
Today we went to Czech Paradise. I can’t remember the Czech name for it, but it was absolutely gorgeous. Well, first we went to Mlada Boleslav to the Skoda car plant. So I suppose I should probably put this entry in some form of chronological order. Mlada Boleslav is a small city of about 50,000 I think, and the car factory is the major industry there. I’m pretty sure Vlasta told us they employed about 25,000 people. It wasn’t a very pretty city. It was sort of depressing because a lot of the stuff wasn’t that well taken care of. [View Full Entry]

I expect the UK is supposed to be in the top left corner. Perhaps it was removed to coincide with UKIP's success on June 4th.
So... haven't been out of Prague this week, but managed to have one very inspiring cultural afternoon. My friend Jana and I were intent on doing something together today and were planning to try and go out of town, however the weather recently has just been depressing (run away from crap english summer weather and it just follows you, apparently), so it wouldn't have been a good idea. There's been a lot of poster hype around for this temporary installment by "contemporary visual artist" Douglas Gordon at the DOX gallery in Holešovice, which generally looked quite interesting as well, so [View Full Entry]

The Chateau at Konopiste
Today some of us went on a trip to Konopište, which is a chateau a little ways outside of Prague that was a favorite property of Franz Ferdinand. It was an optional excursion, so it was probably only half of the students here at the summer school who went. We had to ride an actual train to get there, which was pretty cool. It’s interesting to see just how much public transport is utilized here (and in Europe in general) compared to the US. The ride there took us a while, I’d say maybe around an hour and a half. Cesky Krumlov: fairytales, gyspy madness, and Hostel 99 Just back from Cesky Krumlov, "the fairytale village of South Bohemia" it is called. I love it, it had such charm, with its cobblestone sidewalks, babbling river (not as innocently babbling on this trip, I'll explain later), colorful castle tower, and hilly landscape. Though it is the second most visited place in the Czech Republic and has its share of souvenier shops and touristy gymics (including the Museum of Medieval torture=the the stereotype museum in every Europeon village), Krumlov has an old-worldl [View Full Entry]

Friday! Europe » Czech Republic » Prague
I had a chance to use some of the Czech we’ve been learning last night. I was sitting in the lobby of the dormitory working on last night’s blog entry and checking my email when a man walked toward my table and started asking me something in Czech. I kind of froze, but after a few seconds I resorted to “Promiňte, promiňte. Nemluvim česky!” He gave me a bit of a blank look, then asked if I spoke English. I replied that yes, I do in fact speak English and he sat down next to me. He asked me what [View Full Entry]

Back to classes today. We had Czech language first thing in the morning. Like I said earlier, I really like this language. To the point that I’m thinking about seeing if there are Czech classes I can take at OSU. It seems like some people are really having trouble with it and don’t like it at all, but so far I haven’t found it that difficult. Then again, we’re only learning basic things like “What is your name?” (Jak se jmenuješ?), “Where are you from?” (Odkud jsi?), and “I don’t speak Czech” (nemluvim česky). [View Full Entry]
