Following the First World War, the closely related Czechs and Slovaks of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire merged to form Czechoslovakia. During the interwar years, the new country's leaders were frequently preoccupied with meeting the demands of other ethnic minorities within the republic, most notably the Sudeten Germans and the Ruthenians (Ukrainians). After World War II, a truncated Czechoslovakia fell within the Soviet sphere of influence. In 1968, an invasion by Warsaw Pact troops ended the efforts of the country's leaders to liberalize Communist party rule and create "socialism with a human face." Anti-Soviet demonstrations the following year ushered in a period of harsh repression. With the collapse of Soviet authority in 1989, Czechoslovakia regained its freedom through a peaceful "Velvet Revolution." On 1 January 1993, the country underwent a "velvet divorce" into its two national components, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Czech Republic joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. Fully rested and bright and chippy from not drinking for the first time in perhaps 7 days, i woke up relatively early and went to get breakfast (something i would not usually do anyway) with Enda. In a surprise shock, Conor slept in. After Breakfast we did some research for getting out of Prague (those first few encounters had us hankering for Austria ((which by the way i can now say we were right to do)) which of course was the next step of our journey). Enda got talking to an annoying little fu#ker from Austria (most Austrians are lovely, but [View Full Entry]

9 August 2009 We have left Prague and are heading for Cesky Krumlov a quaint little medieval Czech village to the south in the region of Bohemia. We were amazed by the Krumlov Castle which looks as though it has been work in progress since the beginning of the 14th century on top of the hill overlooking the village. The village is in the crook of the river Vltava, the same river that flows through Prague and presents a series of rapids which seem to be a favourite during summer. The first stop for us was to climb up the 126 [View Full Entry]

We went to a Salvador Dali exhibition today, we both remember his art from GCSE. It was really weird but we really enjoyed it. We also went up to the Royal Gardens which were beautiful but it's so hot we didn't last very long in the heat. We've been having such a giggle and taken lots of photos. It's been really useful having a kitchen in the last couple of places we've stayed in, managing to cook real food really cheaply (Rob's introduced me to eggy bread!) We also had an authentic czech meal out last night (thanks Robin and Alice!) [View Full Entry]

Upon getting up at five due to Mr. Snore, i went for a quick two hour walk around Munich to watch the sun come up. That is in fact the second time i got to do that in this holiday, although this time it was for a different reason to Conor ´needing the room´ :-) Anyway, i got one last stroll around Munich in before heading back to the hostel for a sit down and to say goodbye to some of the people we had met the daynight before. I nearly threw up as they ate due to a combination of [View Full Entry]

We enjoyed a few much needed drinks in Prague last night. It was really good exploring the city at night (while drinking!). We've been exploring today too and really love it here, it's chilled out but also busy, the river is so nice. We have been lucky enough to see the Prague Castle at night and in the daytime aswell as to walk across the Charles Bridge, we got some fantastic photos. We have another day tomorrow so might get a boat out on the river. [View Full Entry]

7 August 2009 Another beautiful day in Saxony, clear blue skies, an expected top of 25 degrees Celsius and very calm. A good day for touring again. The Hotel Berlin Berlin has been a great hotel and we have topped up with another great breakfast ahead of today’s trip south to Dresden and then onto Prague for another two day stop. We are travelling through what was the former “East Germany”, the road systems are fantastic here as well but the area is scarcely populated, apparently since the re-unification the former East Germans have moved out because the regions are [View Full Entry]

later I find out that everyone parks like this,
three hours of sleep over two days couldn't hinder my sampling of a true budvar. which by the way is not awesome but is a huge leap from the American version. The biggest shock so far has been being in the presence of people that would be a blast to chat or bullshit with and being unable to communicate. I have probably done more eyebrow accrobatics and goofy-ass smirks in the last two days than Gizmo and E.T. combined. The city itself is great. The lady who owns the hostel I'm staying in has a Cruella Deville look about her and [View Full Entry]

Another city to travel to and appreciate have to say was glad to leave Budapest and well don’t have anything to write about it was a pretty city but that’s as far as it goes. So from there we ventured to Prague and what a difference it is after a long day on the train we just chilled the first night must be getting old we seem to do a lot of that not a lot of late nights a partying going on well compared to other younger travelers anyway. There looked like a few good things to do in Prague [View Full Entry]

I was naive in thinking I wouldn't be leaving Prague until I head south for Ljubljana on the 17th, as this plus the general absence of any company at the moment led me into an absolutely comatose hermit week since finishing the metro challenge on friday, over which my sleeping pattern became progressively less defined and my energy levels falling into oblivion like a baby on a tightrope. The turning point came last night when I found I couldn't even get to sleep, even as the sun had fully risen at 7am, so I decided to give up on bed, but [View Full Entry]

Prague, Praha. As I mentioned in my Budapest blog, first impressions count and Prague has set out to a great start (although the metro ticketing system is a bit confusing to start with). We made it to our hostel with some much appreciated local help to get us in the right direction and we found it no problems. Our hostel doesn’t have the greatest lay out, our room is a berth of 6 however there is another door off ours that another 6 are in and enter and exit through our main door. We may as well have booked into a [View Full Entry]
