Following the First World War, the closely related Czechs and Slovaks of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire merged to form Czechoslovakia. During the interwar years, the new country's leaders were frequently preoccupied with meeting the demands of other ethnic minorities within the republic, most notably the Sudeten Germans and the Ruthenians (Ukrainians). After World War II, a truncated Czechoslovakia fell within the Soviet sphere of influence. In 1968, an invasion by Warsaw Pact troops ended the efforts of the country's leaders to liberalize Communist party rule and create "socialism with a human face." Anti-Soviet demonstrations the following year ushered in a period of harsh repression. With the collapse of Soviet authority in 1989, Czechoslovakia regained its freedom through a peaceful "Velvet Revolution." On 1 January 1993, the country underwent a "velvet divorce" into its two national components, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Czech Republic joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. After 'local' projects (Belgium) I was assigned to an abroad projet again, once the inital phaze passed, it was time to go abroad and perform some work on the client side, Czech Republic, Prague this time...never been there before, not even to the country as such. Historically I don't know much about Czech Republic, and I did not expected much, to my surprise ..Prague has a lot of nice to offer. The first day (and night ) I was feeling too ill( sever cold) to go out altough I did had a nice chat with the lady in the lobby, she told [View Full Entry]

Tram 22!
Tram 22!
This is the tram that takes us from our dorm (near the Prague Castle) to class and a lot of other places down town.
They weren't lying, Czech intensive is pretty intense! Our intensive class started last monday.. it is a five our class starting at 9 and lasting until 2. We have it for two weeks (ten classes). But we have reached the half way point! We have about 15 kids in each class and we get like two twenty minute breaks... I actually think its a great way to get us into the class routine.. Every morning, we wake up at 7, get ready, eat breakfast, and leave the kolej (that's czech for dorm!) around 8:40, walk to our tram stop which is [View Full Entry]

Wine Festival! Europe » Czech Republic » Prague
Today after Czech intensive, we were feeling pretty good because it was friday, so instead of taking naps, we went to a wine festival. It was not what I was expecting at all! We got off the tram and walked into the tented area. There many stands, not just wine stands, but food, crafts, toys, jewelry,etc.. I went there expecting just to taste some wines, but I ended up buying some candy from a candy stand, buying a Czech dessert (it was a batter wrapped around a pole seasoned with sugar and cinamon over an open flame until cooked, then they [View Full Entry]

Czech Republic Paint Day and Beyond 9/8 - 9/17 (CR start 9/1) The last blog left off after the Day of Silence and before the Day of Paint. So, one night while we were all hanging out, the boys told us how they had been planning on painting the kitchen for a long time. At the moment it was just a pale yellow color with fun drawings the boys had made here and there. But they wanted a full make over for it, and had been hoping we could do it when we arrived. This was wonderfully exciting for us! So, [View Full Entry]

So, I have been here for a little over a week now.. And don't get me wrong, this place is beautiful and I love it. But there are some things they missing according to my American standards... 1. Free refills. If you ask your server for a free refill, they will laugh at you as they charge you for another coke. I always wondered why my Russian and Polish friends in the Outerbanks were so crazy about the jumbo cups at Burger King. 2. Free water. Ask for water, they will bring you a bottle of it. Tell them you want [View Full Entry]

Prague Europe » Czech Republic » Prague
This summer (2009) I spent six weeks in Prague teaching a study abroad course. The city is incredibly well-preserved and an architect's dream. I would highly recommend just taking a few days to wonder around the city streets to take in the city. I wasn't much into Czech food but there are other options. I definitely enjoyed time off the beaten path and would recommend that to anyone with a few days to spend in Prague. Yes, take in the castle area, the Charles Bridge, and Old Town Square but then venture out to some neighborhoods and parks--try walking up Petrin [View Full Entry]

Last I left Trencin in western Slovakia and took the train to Tatranska Lomnica, just north of Poprad Tatry, the centre for excursions into Tatras mountain region. It is shoulder season now, as high season is their winter time, and I could just imagine it being a lovely winter wonderland with racoons climbing trees and snow capped fir and pine trees about to topple with the weight of the snow. The train travel from Trencin was lovely, through Mala Fatra national park (towns of Vrutky, Martin) and passing many lakes and narrow gorges akin to going from Paeroa to Tauranga alongside [View Full Entry]

Baby Giraffes
I don't usually take pictures at zoos, but I had to for Ashley, my roommate at Geneseo who looooves them. Here you go Ash!
So.. today, we woke up and a huge group of 15 of us decided to go to the zoo.. not something I'd do if I were only here for a week, but since I'm here for 3 more months, why not? Plus they had a student discount :) it was $5.00USD to get it in.. Not too bad! So I thought before I went, how could a Czech zoo be different from and American zoo? Well I have some answers... First, if you are Czech, bringing your dog to the zoo is the cool thing to do... big or small, adorable [View Full Entry]

Dobra dan from Trencin, northern Slovakia! What a tiring but exciting 96 hours it has been since leaving Auckland..... Firstly, it was an early start for a 9am flight from Auckland to Seoul on Monday September 7th. Now I had doubts booking with a cheaper airline back in january (befor fares really went low and lower again), but I have to say they were very good on service and food, if the antiquity of the airplanes leaves a little wanting......... In contrast to Air NZ's transtasman service, it was lighter on the entertainment facilities but considerably better in the polite Asian [View Full Entry]
