Following the First World War, the closely related Czechs and Slovaks of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire merged to form Czechoslovakia. During the interwar years, the new country's leaders were frequently preoccupied with meeting the demands of other ethnic minorities within the republic, most notably the Sudeten Germans and the Ruthenians (Ukrainians). After World War II, a truncated Czechoslovakia fell within the Soviet sphere of influence. In 1968, an invasion by Warsaw Pact troops ended the efforts of the country's leaders to liberalize Communist party rule and create "socialism with a human face." Anti-Soviet demonstrations the following year ushered in a period of harsh repression. With the collapse of Soviet authority in 1989, Czechoslovakia regained its freedom through a peaceful "Velvet Revolution." On 1 January 1993, the country underwent a "velvet divorce" into its two national components, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Czech Republic joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. Prague was an excellent place to visit. I went there with three of my friends and we stayed in Czech Inn, it's a hostel and a hotel. However, the hostel room we stayed in was just as nice as a nice hotel. The only thing different was the bathroom. Breakfast was included in our travel package we chose and it was probably the best breakfast I have had in Europe so far. We arrived in Prague Friday at around 11am, it ended up being a 13 hour drive from Florence. We then got to do a walking tour of Prague and [View Full Entry]

Hi all, I made it to Prague today. We were on a train out of Munich at 844 this morning. We are down to 4. Courtney, Stacy, and Trey headed back to the states. Chad and his sis went to Vienna. Lauren, Mel, and Gina are in Venice. Me, Greg, Jose, and Frankie are in Prague. Once we got to the station we had a nice man waiting to drive us to the condo I rented off homeaway.com. It is nice and large and has a washing machine. First things first, we did a load of laundry and headed out for [View Full Entry]

Sorry about the length of some of the last blogs - sometimes we get a bit off track and don't post for over a week and then end up having to put a huge amount onto one post! Hopefully this one will be shorter as we're just getting back on track and we mostly did a lot of walking in Prague because we didn't want to spend any more Crowns than we had left in our pockets, and we had a big night out and basically couldn't move from our campsite the next day! But moving on to Prague. I know [View Full Entry]

So, today was the last day of Czech Intensive class... We took our test yesterday, so we were all wondering WHY we were required to go to class today. Well, I am glad I did. Or I may have missed out! We all shlepped our way to class at 9am.. but our professor was late. He finally showed up around 930am (at this point we were all wishing we were in the US because of the 15 minute rule!). He walked in with a smile- and his what..his guitar?? He unzipped the case and told us to turn to the [View Full Entry]

The internet connection here is slow, but I managed to get some pictures on the computer. More to come! Yesterday Jessica and I spent an entire day training to some small town called Kutna Hora to see a church. A few hundred years ago a monk kind of lost it and dug up 40,000 human remains. He made all these designs out of human bones. It was kind of disturbing, but pretty awesome. I really wanted to touch one, but Jessica said no. We got off at the wrong stop and had to wait for an hour in an even smaller [View Full Entry]

Beer in Munich
Prague

After finally getting over the worst case of the runs i've had in my life, we made a new plan and headed for Telc in the Moravian area of the Czech Republic. Telc (pronounced Telch) is a very cute little town with a Unesco World Heritage listed old town square and a renaissance style castle. But after taking advantage of the free wifi and free washing in Budapest all morning, we didn't make it to Telc until after 5 so sight seeing was out. Instead we settled in for a couple of local ales that immediately reinforced Bretto's notion that Czech [View Full Entry]

Last week, posters were spread around Prague about a free concert in Old Town Square.. Goran Bregović's brass orchestra were scheduled to play at 7:30, and by 5:30, the square was already filled up! Of course, we showed up right when it started, so we had to connect hands and push our way through the lively crowd. We could hear the festivities all the way from the Charles Bridge! The music was traditional Slavic with a contemporary gypsy twist! The crowd was dancing and everyone was speaking different languages.. Girls were up on their boyfriends' shoulders with their arms in the [View Full Entry]

Prague, Czech Republic Monday, September 21, 2009 Oh, Golden City, how you can enchant a simple country boy from North Carolina. I speak, of course, of Prague, the former capitol of Bohemia and current capitol of the Czech Republic. As part of this rest break, I decided to break out of my comfort zone (countries where I can at least halfway read the signs and know enough language to muddle about) to venture into some new territory. Since the 1990s, Prague has been a big hit on the backpacker circuit both because of the mystery of it being a former Soviet [View Full Entry]

Jessica had her bags returned, so all is good. We trained to Munich the day before yesterday to go to Oktoberfest. It was amazing, people everywhere in lederhosen and German dresses. We decided to order a beer and went the waiter came he was holding the biggest "glasses" of beer I've ever seen. They were a liter! So we drank one, then went to another place and decided why not have another? Then we decided, why not have another? Unfortunate choices because the next morning I woke up with the worst hangover of my life. But, since it was the first [View Full Entry]

We had a 4 day break in Prague at the end of June. We had a great time. We loved it. We didn't do too much ... except to walk, and walk, and walk and walk -- actually we really overdid the walking, I estimate 20-30 kilometers a day -- was pretty exhausted at the end -- crawled back to our hotel every night, falling into bed, groaning in pain. Even took a bath, using those bath salts the hotels always give you and that I never use. I think it helped a bit. By the end of the 4 days, [View Full Entry]
