Following the First World War, the closely related Czechs and Slovaks of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire merged to form Czechoslovakia. During the interwar years, the new country's leaders were frequently preoccupied with meeting the demands of other ethnic minorities within the republic, most notably the Sudeten Germans and the Ruthenians (Ukrainians). After World War II, a truncated Czechoslovakia fell within the Soviet sphere of influence. In 1968, an invasion by Warsaw Pact troops ended the efforts of the country's leaders to liberalize Communist party rule and create "socialism with a human face." Anti-Soviet demonstrations the following year ushered in a period of harsh repression. With the collapse of Soviet authority in 1989, Czechoslovakia regained its freedom through a peaceful "Velvet Revolution." On 1 January 1993, the country underwent a "velvet divorce" into its two national components, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Czech Republic joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. What a great way to kick off vacation. Friends, champagne and antipasto.
Well, I am finally at the computer. It seems so long ago that I left the house, although it was really only about 20 hours of traveling. I have to admit that flying Economy Plus wasn't bad. The food was pretty darn good, which coming from me is something. I had great connections and was met at the Prague Airport by the driver who gave me some good pointers as we drove. After checking in, showering and just plopping on the bed for a half hour, I went out exploring. My hotel is quite nice, quaint and located in a neighborhood [View Full Entry]

After yesterday’s ambitious day of touring, I toned it down a bit today. This morning, I started over the Charles Bridge towards the New Town area, where I would do most of my touring. My first stop was at the Old Town Square. This area has a few different tourist sights as well as the customary food, jewelry and souvenir stands, restaurants, cafes and tourist shops. When I arrived, it was about a quarter to ten, which meant the bells would be chiming and the turn of the hour spectacle would be taking place at Old Town Hall. Over the coming [View Full Entry]

This morning I went for a training run (I finally didn’t slack off). I started out by going over the Charles Bridge and running what I thought was a semi-planned route around the city. It felt strange because my typically sound sense of direction seemed off. After a few miles I tried to get my bearings and was totally lost. I kept running. Eventually I came upon this huge tower. It was a TV tower. I was completely in the opposite direction from where I thought I was. That’s strange. I don’t remember crossing another bridge to get here. With my [View Full Entry]

Today was another travel day. I left Cesky Krumlov this morning, anticipating another stay at the garage-like station in Cesky Budejovice where I had to make a transfer again. But no need - this transfer was at the main station. The main station had such frivolities as multiple tracks, an enclosed area, food sales and workers (actually it was quite normal). What a huge difference. While I was there, I went into one of the nearby stores to find a replacement jacket. I figured with food as cheap as it is here, maybe I could find a cheap jacket. Wrong. 5,700 [View Full Entry]

BUDVAR!!! aka, the other, better Budwieser... ahhh, delicious beer.
Prague is said to be the most beautiful city on earth, and though I would personally have to disagree and say that Bruges was better, I would definitely agree that Prague has its moments. Parts of Prague were absolutely fascinating, but for me there were simply too many people, a fact that is pushing me towards the understanding that my Dad has been right all these years, the woods are perfect because they are quieter and certainly less chaotic. When we first arrived in Prague we had two goals, a real meal and Czech Beer... lots of Czech beer. After having [View Full Entry]

Is this the real life; Is this just fantasy - Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody Well, I took the opening lyrics completely out of context but doing so lends them nicely to my life over the past five months. Plus I really wanted to work in the song given my location. That was my weak attempt. I woke up this morning and went for a very short run to loosen up my legs. It gave me a nice overview of the small town and where the major spots are in relation to one another. After getting cleaned up and grabbing a small breakfast [View Full Entry]

Rub for good luck!
So we didn't do much yesterday before the bike tour. Just people watched and showed Gina some of the town. The bike tour, Praha Bike, started at 5:30pm. There were only 7 of us. My group of 5 and 2 girls from Minnesota/Chicago. They had also came over from Munich so we shared Oktoberfest stories. The tour started out rough. We all got ponchos because it started to drizzle. David, our tour guide, took us over the river and made us carry our bikes up a few flights of stairs. Not fun. We were all winded only 10 minutes into the [View Full Entry]

Usually my entries are plain on travel days - I left such and such a place to go here. I arrived. That’s it. Well, I won’t do that here. I dedicate this entry to Salzburg and the amazing time I had there. When I left on this trip, I had highly doubted that any spot I would visit would ever come close to beating some of the cities in Italy I visited two years ago. I had enjoyed that trip immensely; probably some of it was due to it being my first trip abroad. But it’s still tough to beat Italy [View Full Entry]

Yikes, a quick flight 750km north to Prague and I've gone straight from summer to autumn. It was unusual to be in Prague without constant sunshine and hot weather, but the three days here have been cold and dull. Beer in the square just isn't the same when it's chilly. On top of this, most of the bridge is undergoing renovation, ruining any photographic opportunities. Nevertheless, it was great to be back in Prague and nice to be in a familiar place that you don't need to explore completely in a few days. The off-season has also kept the crowds down [View Full Entry]

Hi all, A tip for future travelors.... frommers online has AMAZING "walking tours" that the cheapo travelors can take advantage of and see the sights while learning some history and culture. :) Today we did a walking tour of the Charles Bridge and Mala Strana (Lesser Town). Fantastic. We walked along the Vitava River to the 14th Century bridge known as Charles Bridge. It has over 21 statues on it and we learned about them all. My favorite was the St. John of Nepomuk because we could touch it for good luck! :) After we got done walking we had lunch [View Full Entry]
