Tonight features dining and entertainment. I booked a special Historical Fantasy Show using Viator (my favorite booking website). The plan calls for a traditional Czech dinner, all the wine and beer you want, a full 5-Course meal, and entertainment. Sounds fun, so let's go!
We asked at the front dest the best way to get to the restaurant. They said go out the door turn left and left again. Walk past the Astronomical Clock and 5 minutes from there is the restaurant. Great, 30 minutes later, after several wrong turns and going in the wrong direction once again, we arrived at our destination, U Pavouka at the Korma Restaurant. Dinner was scheduled for 8 PM. We arrived a little early. We left a full 45 minutes early to compensate for getting lost, so we had some shopping time before dinner.
The doors opened at 7:30 and we followed the crowd into a dark hall, down some steep spiral stairs into two cavernous rooms. The ambiance called for an authentic Medieval Tavern and it was. The room was candle lit (with some very subdued electric lights). All manner of paraphranelia simulating a tavern of old hung on the walls. The
seating consisted of large heavy oak tables, sitting from 5 to 10 people, with heavy wooden chairs. It really felt like a Medieval Tavern.
Our table was set for 10 so we had 8 strangers in our company. As always we introduced ourselves to a couple about our age who hailed from California. Their names were oddly enough Kathleen (Kathy) and Phillip (his name with 2 L's). What are the odds? Joining was a solo from Belgium, another solo unfriendly Asian gentleman, two unknowns who did not introduce themselves and a couple from Puerto Rico who were very wealthy as the husband once played baseball in the US so he must have been somewhat good, right? Unfortunately, I do not watch any sports so his identity will forever remain a mystery. Our table was complete and the fun soon began.
First came the beverages. Beer flowed a plenty as did the red or white wine. I stayed with beer, Cathy with water. Our dinner mates went with red wine and beer. The meal was amazing. First was an appetizer plate with smoked duck , turkey breast, red beets (I left those), Czech cheese, on a bed of lettuce,
and fresh baked bread and buter. This was followed by a hearty Czech potatoe soup with mushrooms. OK, those who know me know I am allergic to mushrooms, but I decided, what the hell. If I die in Prague, I die happy, right? Next came a delicious slice of Old Bohemian pancake filled with spinach and (you guessed it) mushrooms. and KUBA pearl barley and yup, mushrooms. Someone was obviously trying to kill me.
Having survived thus far, I am sure due to the three drafts of cold Czech beer, we ventured on to the main course. There were several choices Vegan, fish, Roast duck with Roast Chicken (Cathy) and something I had never heard of, baked pork knuckle (my choice). This was all washed down with copious amounts of beer and finished off with a dessert of homemade pie. Dinner was nothing to complain about. Tasty, enjoyable and filling. The food, however, was only the half of it.
Since the scene was that of a tavern, we were treated to a jester/magician who sat at various tables and told bawdy jokes or performed card tricks. We had pirate fights, fantastic banging drums and bagpipes, belly dancers who
performed with veils, swords, and flaming torches. The music, the food, the drink, the entertainment went on for over 2 hours and all for the price of 1390 CZK each ($58). Cathy and I had a wonderful evening.
When we left the restaurant, we stopped in a store and bought some more gifts for the folks back home. We started to walk back to the hotel and noticed if we had turned right instead of left coming out of the hotel it would have been a 5 minute walk. Oh well, it was a shorter walk back to the hotel and some much needed sleep.
