Ever see a red frog or iguanas and spider monkeys climbing trees? Tortuguero lies on the north coast of Costa Rica and is only accessible by plane or boat. We did the van and boat trip which involved a couple of hours on paved road, a couple of hours on gravel road and couple hours by river boat. The trip was interesting in that you go through a National park, vast stretches of banana farms owned by Dole and Del Monte and the ride through the canals to Turtle Beach lodge. We stopped at one of the banana processing facilities and learned a little about the bananas. In Costa Rica, Nicaraguans provide the labor on the farms. It is readily apparent that by the workers lodging at these remote banana farms that they are being taken ... read more

We left Monteverde for Arenal and the city of La Fortuna. We did the jeep-boat-jeep transfer which takes about 2 1/2 hours. It is about hour on a gravel road, 30 minutes on Lake Arenal, which was very pleasant, and then by a relatively good road to La Fortuna. This was much better than the alternative which is 4 hours on a bumpy gravel road. After Santa Elena, we feel like we are in the big city with a population of 8,000. It is also much warmer than Monteverde with pineapple and orange orchards and a lot of agriculture. However, its primary industry is tourism due to Arenal Volcano, hot springs and adventure. Arenal Volcano is the most active volcano in Costa Rica and on clear day you can see the lava and smoke. Of course, ... read more

Costa Rica seems worlds apart from its neighbors to the north. It readily obvious that the standard of living is much higher as well as a lack of indigenous people influence in the culture. What it lacks in that cultural diversity, it makes up for it in that it has one of the most gorgeous landscapes in the Monteverde Cloud Forest. It also has some adrenalin pumping features that would make any Kiwi proud! It was a little tough (again) getting here from Granada. We took TICA bus to Liberia which required 4 hours to get through immigration. This was the most disorganized hot frustrating (got any other non 4 letter word adjectives?) time on the trip. People were butting in and there was a total lack of control . Maybe there is still some third ... read more

After 20 hours in a bus over two days, we made it to Granada. We took Hedman Alas to San Pedro Sula and spent the night, and then it took 15 more hours and a taxi ride from Managua to get to Granada. Ouch! The bus ride through Honduras confirmed why we always wonder about all those beautiful hardwoods from there since we saw a lot of tree covered mountains. We were fortunate in that we only spent about 15 minutes in Tegucigalpa as it looked like a pit. However, getting to Granada was a relief! It is old colonial city on the shore of Lake Nicaragua which is one of the largest fresh water lakes in the world. You can readily tell that Nicaragua is supporting this city as a prime tourist destination. There is ... read more

We took Hedman Alas bus from Antigua to Copan Ruinas in Honduras after a one night stay in Antigua. So long Antigua, we will not see you again after passing this way three times! The seats on Hedman Alas were pure luxury! When we got to Honduras, the immigration officer was a joker imitating a lion for “Leona” and me as poquino for “jr.” Everyone is a comedian! Arrived in Copan Ruinas which is a funky little town of 6000 people two miles from the Mayan Ruins. Took a tuk-tuk to our hotel. We were staying on the edge of “town” four blocks from the center of town. The hills around town are full of birds and Casa Del Café B&B is great place to stay. Great people in a quiet area. We went to the ... read more

Does anybody know what time it is? More on that later. We left Copan for Lake Atitlian a day later due to some very poor service from Aventuras Turistica who was to provide shuttle service from Copan to Lake Atilian. Fifteen minutes after they were supposed to pick us up in Copan, we called and said they would be there in 20 minutes. 25 minutes later they said the van was full and we would have to stand or go the next day. This was after a prepaid voucher from two days prior. So we said “Hell no, we won’t go!” and stayed another day in Copan and booked with Adrenalina Tours. We got into Panajachel in Lake Atilian at 6:30 PM and the van driver tried to help his buddy have us take a private ... read more

We took a mini van shuttle to Coban. It was about a six hour ride and along the way were several small mountain villages. Every area has their specific style of dress. The woman wear brightly colored long skirts and a very unique style top. In this area, it is primarily a solid colored lacy blouse. We came here to go to Semuc Champey and to visit a Finca or coffee plantation. In lieu of staying in Lanquin, which is closer to Semuc Champey but also much more rustic with a lack of hot showers and the other basic necessities of life, we decided on Coban. We took a 12 hour tour with Maya ch Expeditions. The ride is pretty rough as it takes about 2 hours to go 30 miles. Approx 15 miles is curvy ... read more

We left early from Antigua on a shuttle to the Linea Dorado bus station in Guatemala City for the nine hour bus ride to Flores which is in northwest Guatemala, a short distance from Belize and Mexico. The ride was quite surprising with the varied landscape of high altiplano and high desert and then descending into the El Petén jungle area. The prime purpose in going there was to see Tikal, a Mayan city state that lasted for 1000 years until it was abandoned approx 800 AD. We stayed in El Remate which is about 15 miles from the Tikal Park. El Remate also is right on the lake. Being so close allowed us to get there early to the park. The entrance gate is massive and reminded us of that gate scene in Jurassic Park! ... read more

Ever climb an active volcano? Leona said “that’s got to be the craziest thing I have ever done!!” We spent four nights in Antigua. The city is approximately 45 minutes from Guatemala City and use to be the Capital City. It has cobblestone streets and sits in the shadow of two volcanoes of which Agua Volcano is always visible from anywhere in the city. It has several beautiful churches from the 15th century of which La Merced is absolutely gorgeous. So why did Leona say that about hiking Volcano Pacaya? The hike starts innocently enough at approximately 5000ft with kids selling walking sticks for 5 Q (60cents). You soon realize that this will be like walking up a 250 story building to within 200 meters of 2500 meter peak where 40 mph winds, and blowing volcanic ... read more

We are heading off to Central America for six weeks in January and February. We fly to Guatemala City and fly back from San Jose Costa Rica. We are looking forward to seeing Antigua, Lake Atilian, and Tikal in the Guatemala, Copan in Honduras, Granada and Lake Ometope in Nicaragua, and Monteverde, Arenal, and Tortuguero in Costa Rica. We should be able to see lots of Mayan ruins and culture, rain forests, cloud forests, active volcanos (don't forget the marshmallows!) wildlife, with a little Spanish thrown in. We will be providing periodic updates on this blog.... read more
