Following the First World War, the closely related Czechs and Slovaks of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire merged to form Czechoslovakia. During the interwar years, the new country's leaders were frequently preoccupied with meeting the demands of other ethnic minorities within the republic, most notably the Sudeten Germans and the Ruthenians (Ukrainians). After World War II, a truncated Czechoslovakia fell within the Soviet sphere of influence. In 1968, an invasion by Warsaw Pact troops ended the efforts of the country's leaders to liberalize Communist party rule and create "socialism with a human face." Anti-Soviet demonstrations the following year ushered in a period of harsh repression. With the collapse of Soviet authority in 1989, Czechoslovakia regained its freedom through a peaceful "Velvet Revolution." On 1 January 1993, the country underwent a "velvet divorce" into its two national components, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Czech Republic joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. Coming Home.

Europe » Czech Republic » North » Prague
The trip is over, I am writing this from the Prague airport trying not to think of the 24 hours of travel I have ahead of me. I woke up with a stuffed up nose and sore throat this morning, so breathing recycled air all day should be fun! Not to mention I somehow twisted the wrong way getting out the cab yesterday with my luggage and pulled a muscle in my leg. I looked pretty cool limping around the cobblestone streets and climbing the stairs of the castle, etc. Just goes to show you can get hurt when you exercise! [View Full Entry]

Prague at Last

Europe » Czech Republic » North » Prague
Only took us 5 hours to find the hotel. Driving in Prague is an experience ............. Will be sight seeing for the net two days or more. Ate at a very nice Italian restaurant. Smoking is definitely not frowned upon here, Cough - cough. Traffic in Prague beats Montreal or wherever. Try driving withoout signs and even those you find you can't read and the GPS sucks. Took us way out of town had to buy paper maps to ffind hotel. Few people speak English so it is definitely as foreign country. Lots to laugh about if we survive, tomorrow the [View Full Entry]

In Prague
On the way to Prague we stopped in Dresden which also looked like another amazing place to visit, but Ive been told we can't go everywhere so may be another time. We arrived in Prague and on the first day headed into the centre. On the way we crossed over Charles Bridge which I got told had egg and water mixed into the cement when it was created to make it stronger(crazy). I really enjoyed walking down the maze of medieval lanes towards the main square and when we got there it was magical. We both felt like we were in [View Full Entry]

Prague
Castle
Me

Great weather. Toured the castle. Dates back to 14th Century. Very interesting. Lots of walking. Included a bear pit with bear. Castle was owned by Rosenburg family initially. Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque. Fairy tale town. Very few people speak English. Food is different - can't read the menu. Beer is good. Off to Prague tomorrow. [View Full Entry]

I (Patsy) love this picture! Prague is such a great place to take it all in...
You don't realize how culturally warped we are until see the city gates to a place more than 900 years old and the first thought you can muster is, "Gee, that looks like Disneyland." Prague is a truly vibrant city - We went for two daytime 3 hour walking tours and one nightime 2 hour walking tour and feel like we just started to get a feel for the city. The best part is that the day tours were free except for the tips for the tourguide!! We met up with Patsy's friend for dinner, who married a German guy and [View Full Entry]

Long day. Left Vancouver at 6 am and arrived Munich at 5:30 am local time. Picked up rental car and drove to Cesky Krumlov. Found the Pension Kadlec and then visited the old town. Tomorrow will visit the castle. Driving the German Motorways is an experience. Looks like a road race. [View Full Entry]

On Our Own

Europe » Czech Republic » East
Sometimes the realization that you're in a new place hits you slowly, in a kind of sink in your bones kind of way. Other times, it hits you all at once. Today was one of those times! We were on the train from Munich to Prague after two great stays with our German friends. One man in our train car looked a little rough around the edges and weathered. While we were rolling through the German countryside, he rested quietly with his thumbs hooked in his overalls. The sun was low in the sky and a deep orange as we crossed [View Full Entry]

Kafka's Prague

Europe » Czech Republic » North » Prague
We got up late today and had a nice easy day around the city. We ate lunch at an excellent japanese restaurant called "Yami" in Stare Mesto and then made our way West over the bridge to the Kafka museum. This museum is really top notch for fans of Kafka and even those who know nothing about him. Chrissy came away wanting to read his writing, and I learned a lot more about the writer and his Prague-centric insperations than I ever did before. Being in this city, one can quickly see what drove the artist to the fanciful and repressed [View Full Entry]

These are some highlight photos from a Cyklojizda, or Critical Mass ride here in Prague this past Autumn. The date happened to fall on when the Soviet Tanks arrived 40 years prior to crush Czechoslovakia's attempt to follow in Yugoslavia's footsteps by adopting "Communism with a human face". In 1990 after the Berlin Wall fell and Czechos. was struggling to free itself from Russia again(this time successfully), the Czech artist David Cerny painted a tank memorial on a square pink.. That inspired this ride [View Full Entry]
