We caught the No.96 bus from Shrewsbury Abbey. Wroxeter Roman City wasn’t far from Attingham Park, which we visited a few years ago. The bus drove past there on the way to Wroxeter village. The bus driver kindly stopped at the bus stop and gave us the direction to Wroxeter Roman City. We showed our English Heritage Membership cards and were offered audio guides. Wroxeter Roman City contained the impressive remains of a Roman bath house in the middle of the countryside. As soon as we set foot on the site, a sizeable freestanding masonry wall came into our sight. We firstly walked on the site of the Basilica where the people would wait for their turn for bathing, and approached the big masonry wall, i.e. the Old Work of the original south wall of the ... read more

One of our main reasons to come back to Shropshire was to visit Wenlock Priory, which was closed when we visited in 2009. We took the No.426 bus from Abbey Foregate on 21 May. As we got off the bus on the Kings Street, we headed for Wenlock Priory. We showed our English Heritage Membership cards at the reception and were offered free audio guides. The laurel hedge path led us to the site of the beautiful and peaceful ruins of Wenlock Priory. Our own guided tour started from the nave length of which is 107m, which is thought to be the longest church on the 7th century. We firstly saw the remains of St Milburge’s church, which was built around 680. The audio guide suggested strolling through the former cloister. There were lines of laurel ... read more

We had planned visiting Wroxeter Roman City, one of the English Heritage sites on 22 May. Mark suggested buying snacks before going there, as there wouldn’t be any shops in the little village. We had read through the English Heritage guidebook and said that Wroxeter Roman City does not have the picnic tables. I therefore suggested visiting Shrewsbury Abbey in the morning, have lunch along the riverside walk, and go to Wroxeter in the afternoon. Shrewsbury Abbey is one of the most distinctive historic buildings in Shrewsbury. It was originally found in 1083, and it was the setting of the famous Cadfael novels written by Ells Peters. Like all of the abbeys in the UK, much of the original structural buildings together with furnishing and treasures dating before the Dissolution, i.e. 1540 have disappeared. Nevertheless, the ... read more

We enjoyed staying in Shrewsbury and visiting Ironbridge and Much Wenlock a few years ago. Our happy memory brought us back to Shrewsbury in May 2012. Mark had arranged for us to get on the tilting train between London Euston and Birmingham New Street and the local train between Birmingham New Street and Shrewsbury on 19 May. He had booked the same hotel as we stayed in 2009. After leaving the station, we took the backstreet off Castle Street, and the little lane of St Mary’s Water Lane leading to the riverside walk. We climbed on the step as we reached English Bridge. We walked on Abbey Foregate towards Abbey Court Hotel. After having a rest, we headed for the town centre via Wyle Cop and High Street and popped in some of the charity shops ... read more

1 January 2012 was Sunday, so it game us the Bank holiday next day. We had planned visiting St Marylebone Church and walking on the Regent’s Park. After reaching Regent’s Park station, we headed for St Marylebone Church. On the way to the church, we were talking about Great Expectation and Charles Dickens, and then came across the relief of Charles Dickens and his family. St Marylebone Church was associated with his family and his novels, e.g. Dombey and Son, the description of baptism ceremony for his son at St Marylebone Church. Marylebone is associated with one of his most famous novels, e.g. David Copperfield. We strolled through the nave and looked at the pipe organ, altarpiece, mahogany choir stalls, archangel carvings on the mahogany furniture and marble mantelpieces, stained glass, and some of the Christmas ... read more

December 3rd 2011

We had recently read the book of history of Nymans Garden written by Shirley Nicholson, and have been inspired to come back there in autumn in 2011. Dense fog was spread through the ground and the misty horizon was appearing when we arrived at Pinetum on 19th November. As we walked down, we found a clump of bamboo shrubs, the wooden sculptures of panda, and winding boardwalk, which attraction had been added recently. All of the garden ornaments like fountains or lanterns were covered up by green clothes and just a few flowers and roses remained flowering. Many shrubs and trees’ foliage had turned gold, red, orange, and yellow and brownish leaves were falling on the ground. As planned, we entered the Wild Garden, opposite to the formal garden. We saw a number of crimson and ... read more

As we had been told that our nephew, Bryn, had started walking and running, and making voices, we really looked forward to seeing him. All of the ornaments on the mantelpiece and lower shelves and my grandfather’s carvings had been put away. There were some changes of locations of coffee table and other furniture. Bryn and his parents arrived at Lark Rise late evening on 4th November. It was dull and wet in the morning on 5th November. John looked at the weather forecast, and we heard that the rain would be cleared away by midday around East Anglia. We decided to go to Ickworth Park from the midday. Bryn was wearing an orange jacket to match with autumn coloured leaves. He was walking independently and comfortably in Lark Rise and Ickworth Park. Many trees and ... read more

There has been more variety of walks added recently. We were interested in the walk of Old Marylebone yesterday from Bond Street starting from Bond Street. After leaving the bustling Oxford Street, we were taken to the little lane lined with charming individual shops and stylish restaurants, which is one of the features of Marylebone village. Before arriving at the Wallace Collection, we saw the very distinctive mustard coloured building, i.e. the very famous Methodist Church on Hinde Street. The walk included the guided tours of Wallace Collection’s highlight paintings. We were given the interpretation of the famous paintings, French furniture, etc. Afterwards, we walked northwards and were shown the back and face of St James Roman Catholic Church, the design of façade looked similar to one I visited in southern France several years ago. Marylebone ... read more

Mark took a day off work on 7th October, and we planned to visit Kenwood House and Pergola Hill Garden on Hampstead Heath. We entered the Hampstead Heath from the foot of Willow Road, at the junction of Devonshire Hill. Mark was reading the map and navigating our route. We had a picnic lunch on the way to Kenwood House. It was a long time since we had last visited Kenwood House. We had heard that the roof would be revamped and renovation work would start from this winter, thus we decided to visit there before it closed for the long term. We looked at a number of beautiful portraits and landscape paintings by Sir Joshua Reynolds, Van Dyck, Thomas Gainsborough, and John Constable, and furniture, the painted ceilings and fringes which were re-designed, furnished, and ... read more

As London residents, we both look forward to the London Olympics in 2011. We decided to do the Olympic Walk on Thursday, 22 September. The walk was due to start from West Ham station. Many people were waiting at the station when we arrived. The London, Guide, Harry, started collecting the money at 2:15. There weren’t very many shops around West Ham station. And, the only public toilet was out of order. He told us that West Ham Station will be the gateway station for the Olympic spectators as well as Stratford, and that’s why he decided West Ham was the gathering point for the walkers. After strolling through the residential areas of Newham Borough, he took us to the footpath leading to Olympic stadium. The foot path is the route where the Olympic spectators will ... read more
