Following the First World War, the closely related Czechs and Slovaks of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire merged to form Czechoslovakia. During the interwar years, the new country's leaders were frequently preoccupied with meeting the demands of other ethnic minorities within the republic, most notably the Sudeten Germans and the Ruthenians (Ukrainians). After World War II, a truncated Czechoslovakia fell within the Soviet sphere of influence. In 1968, an invasion by Warsaw Pact troops ended the efforts of the country's leaders to liberalize Communist party rule and create "socialism with a human face." Anti-Soviet demonstrations the following year ushered in a period of harsh repression. With the collapse of Soviet authority in 1989, Czechoslovakia regained its freedom through a peaceful "Velvet Revolution." On 1 January 1993, the country underwent a "velvet divorce" into its two national components, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Czech Republic joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. Well, we successfully conquered Prague!! We arrived at 11pm Thursday June 11th after a very long drive from Heidelberg. On the way, we stopped in a little town called Rothenburg. (Thanks Teresa for the tip on the Midevil Museum there!) It was an AMAZING old town surrounded by a wall. Took TONS of pictures inside the Kriminal Mueseum. Actually ran the camera out of battery, and had to run back to the RV. So, the drive to Prague was about 5 hours, and Jay had to drive the whole way, as I was a little hungover! However, I did learn the [View Full Entry]

In Old Town Square
Plan today was go to the free tour by the same company that did the tours in England because they were just so darn good! It started at 2pm so I just wandered around the city in the morning, and at around 2pm made my way to the Old Town Square. The tour began and straight away I knew it was going to be really good the tour guide (George) was so enthusiastic, it came through loud and clear that he loved the city and he wanted everyone to as well. He explained the history of Prague quickly but with enough [View Full Entry]

After 7 1/2 hour train ride we arrived in Pretty Prague. Once again we arranged an apartment which was this time a new apart/hotel which is a great idea with long and short time apartments in the new part of town. We found it to be new and very clean, the apartment was wonderful, no laundry facilities though so luckily had it all up to date! There was a supermarket about 50mt away with a pub on the corner. We also noticed a shopping centre about 80mt from our door around the corner. We had decided we were all soooo tired [View Full Entry]

While i was on the train
Up at 11:00am again , got up packed my bags as my trained left at 1:00pm. I said my good byes and then literally ran to the train. My legs felt as if they were on fire, they were still sore from the epic quest from last night but I had no choice but to run if I missed that train it would be a big kick in the balls! I jumped on the train and relaxed , I slept for about 2 hours out of the 3.5 hour journey. When I arrived I navigated yet another public transport system in [View Full Entry]

Day 6, "Czech out my pot"..... No, I haven't started smoking marijuana since I've arrived in Europe, but it took me forever to find a cooking pot here. ;) Today was pretty quiet, still recovering from my illness. Started researching bands for United Islands next week. I'm familiar with absolutely none of them, which is kind of exciting, everything will be totally knew. I may go back to guitar shop the next couple days and get some top recommendations from the guy that says his band is playing in the festival though. Got out around 6 searching for a place to [View Full Entry]

I haven't written anything here in almost 2 weeks. Wanna fight about it? Despite advertising free internet, most hostels I've been staying at really only give you about 15 mins, which gives enough time to type a fewq sentences and maybe upload a pic or two. And well, between trying to find a place to live upon my return to Ottawa, informing people that I am not, in fact, dead and the exhorbited prices being charged for internet here, I've been slacking. And oh, of course, I've just been out doing things that don't involve me sitting in front of a [View Full Entry]

Yeah, I've left Prague already. Just for an afternoon, as a rather special friend of mine back home had been waxing lyrical about Kutná Hora (a city 75km south-east of Prague) and how necessary it is that I visit it while I'm here, so I said to her, I will do so as soon as I'm settled... which took a lot shorter time than I thought! And as I'm still very much lonely here, I guess my time for lone travels is now. So off I went to hit the iron road again today. There was an epic tram fail on [View Full Entry]

Day 5 Wandering Old Town and "Carmen" So I decided to stay in Prague for the weekend, to try to get my bearings. Most of the people in my program are traveling this weekend, a group in Barcelona, some in Vienna, Salzburg, Poland. I've decided I want to concentrate most of my outside Prague traveling in the Czech Rebublic, Poland, and maybe Budapest. I'm likely going to Poland two weekends from now, to Krakow and to seek out my grandmother's family's village (I am Polish). So this weekend I rocked it Hans Solo style. Slept in late, then took the tram [View Full Entry]

It's only been a day and a half and I'm already feeling pretty much at home here. The flight over and journey to the flat were both fine, I arrived quite late in the evening and bloody starving, so took the opportunity to go and discover the local 24 hour shop, where I was attacked by some dog, twitching from god knows what someone had slipped in its food. The first czech I learned while here is that a viennese shortbread is known as a "třený bananek", which literally means "fricative banana" and made me lol. Yesterday, first and foremost I [View Full Entry]

Day 4 The Jewish Quarter So today I went to the Jewish Quarter with a group of people from my program. First we searched for lunch, and I do mean searched, even with a map Prague is somewhat difficult to navigate on foot and its easy to get disoriented as the streets are normally very curvy, I really need to sit down with a map and enjoy some kava mleche (coffee with milk in Czech. We finally found Bohemian Bagel, this little place our tour guide had recommended for cheap quality food. There was an English menu, which my classmates loved, [View Full Entry]
