Today we took the train and ferry which brought us over to the Czech side of the Saxony region. Some notable differences..... it was not quite as clean as the German side, in Hrensko the Asians had set up shop stalls which looked more like Thailand than Europe and overall prices were alot more reasonable than in Germany...... beer cost $1euro vs $4euros. Our walk for the day took us up up up a very nice trail into the mountains and to the top of one of the sandstone formations. It is always amazing how they can get a restaurant at the top of each of these hiking trails and this one was no exception. The highlight was a natural stone bridge. This was one of the nicest trails we took on our trip. The ascent...although ... read more

We entered the Kiel Canal this morning at 4am - no we did not get up although there were pastries and coffee in the crows nest lounge for those who did. The Kiel Canal is the busiest shipping Canal in the world - more so than the Panama or Suez canals - and cruise ships do not often traverse it. Ours is a small ship and we we allowed to shave off the 400 km we would have needed to go around Denmark. It was a big deal for the communities we went through. People were waiting on the shore with big Welcome flags and many waving to us as we cruised by. It took 8 hours to go through the Canal. We enjoyed sitting on our balcony and watching the landscape. At one point we ... read more

We woke to a sunny day again….. no complaints – and had coffee on our balcony. Today is wash day and we camped out after breakfast in the small laundry room to snag on of the 3 washing machines. Of course, since we are on the back end of our cruise everyone else has the same idea. So, this morning will be spent relaxing between babysitting our laundry and waiting for machines. We have met some interesting people on the ship and last evening one of the gentlemen at our table had actually gone to both Royal Roads and RMC in Kingston. Everyone seems to be rather well traveled and the dinner conversation usually involves sharing of amusing stories. One evening we did have a table where everyone seemed to be talking about their various medical ... read more

I awoke this morning as we were cruising through the archipelago on our approach to Stockholm. I looked out of our window and thought I could be in Muskoka or the Thousand Islands…..many small rocky islands with single cottages perched on rocky outcrops. We sat out on the balcony and had our coffee. Stockholm is much larger than Helsinki and we had decided to do the Hop On/Hop Off bus and it worked out fine to get us around Stockholm which is quite spread out across multiple islands. We started off with a trip through the town and got off at the VASA Museum which houses a massive intact 17thcentury wooden war ship. The ship, intended as a propaganda showpiece proclaiming the strength of the at the time, current ruler, sank within the first 20 minutes ... read more

We docked in Helsinki this morning right in the downtown area…..next to the Ferris wheel which many cities now have. There was a morning market set up not too far from the ship along the waterfront. We decided to just go for a walk and find a tourist office. Not too far from the ship is the Finnish President’s residence and there were red carpets set out and some security staff milling around the entrance…..it was obvious that some dignitary was expected. Helsinki is a smallish town and the waterfront is lined with parks and wide sidewalks….we found the tourist office – a free walking tour starting at 10am – and as we left we were treated to a military marching band making it’s way from the central square to the President’s residence. Apparently, there was ... read more

We were in port for two days and only saw a small part of what St Petersburg had to offer. We did not have VISAs so were on a tour through SPB. Our tour guide was excellent and coincidentally, an art history major who was most enthusiastic about living in St Petersburg. She was extremely knowlegable about the history, architecture and art - decorative and paintings. I find that with tours the guide can make or break the trip so we were thankful to have lucked out. Our group was also small..... only 8 of us and mostly mobile. Our first day started with a bit of a tour around the canals of St Petersburg. The buildings along the main river look exactly as they do in the paintings I have seen of St Petersburg. We ... read more

July 7 – Tallinn This morning we docked in Tallinn Estonia – the home of SKYPE – AND I might add the first country to electronically connect all it’s citizens to government services. Each person has a single identity card which serves as their health card/drivers license and everything else – they also have electronic voting. I recall studying this aspect of Estonia when I was involved in designing electronic services for Ontario. Anyhow….. we had booked a food tour of Tallinn and were met by our guide and joined by 7 others also taking the tour. This was a walking tour and I fail to understand why someone who uses a wheelchair and is barely mobile would figure this was appropriate but we did have one elderly person on the tour who had to be ... read more

July 5 – Lithuania – Klaipaidia Today we got into port under sunny skies and warmish temperatures. We were booked for an 8:30am excursion so were up early to get ready. I had heard that this port was a bit under whelming so instead of staying in town to wander and take in the equivalent of the ‘napped flints’ museum we had signed up to visit a former Soviet missile installation located about an hour or so drive into the countryside. This trip was truly fascinating – partly due to the talk from our school teacher guide who shared her experiences growing up in Lithuania during the Soviet occupation. The Soviet missile site was amazing and they have done a really good job at recreating the life in the camp. We got to go down into ... read more

This morning we docked just outside of Copenhagen. What started out as a promising day weather wise - with sun and blue skies - gradually changed over the course of the day into intermittent showers - light and heavy and usually JUST after I had put my coat or umbrella away. Needless to say I can firmly state my new jacket IS water proof!! We decided to do Copenhagen independently but had booked a free walking tour through Sandeman's. After breakfast we caught the 8:30 ship shuttle bus into town and found the meeting place for our tour. The guide was a character - full of wry humour - and he told interesting stories of the history of Copenhagen which involved lots of burning of buildings - fires and drunken firefighters. We walked through the central ... read more

July 2 Day at Sea Today was pretty leisurely with not much to do but relax. The ocean was fairly calm so we were ok as far as motion was concerned. Explored the ship today – it is not huge but it is a real gem – lots of brass and teak – understated but elegant. Our stateroom is huge – and well layed out. We have a walk in closet with lots of space for clothes and built in drawers. There are two desks with lots of electrical outlets. I remember on the NCL cruise we went on having only ONE outlet in the stateroom. We are sandwiched between the gym on deck 9 and the LIDO restaurant on Deck 11 – so perfect. We tried a workout at the gym and it was an ... read more
