Day 2 started with a great improvement. I realized I have an alarm clock on my iPod, so I am now set in that regards. Today was filled with more planning and orientation. I am now all set up for excursions on the weekends. I am really excited to see the rest of the country! I tested into Spanish 101. I am glad for this because there is only room for improvement :) A group of us tried a small Tico restaurant for dinner. The food consisted of chicken, rice, beans, fried plantains, and some type of vegetable mix that we still are not sure what it is. It was all delicious except for the beans. I'm not sure what it is, but I just don't like the taste/texture of them. We also ventured to the ... read more
Costa Rica - Day 3
Published: April 28th 2009Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica » San José » San JoséToday we headed out early, planning to visit two of Costa Rica's prisons. The goal of this trip was to get a grasp of the contrasts between this justice system and the United States justice system. There were absolute contrasts! We first visited an elderly prison. This prison was designed to keep the more vulnerable elderly population segregated from a general population. Upon entering the prison, I immediately noticed the lack of security that we were put through upon entering. We were briefly screened for weapons and then let into the prison in a large group. We were given a tour of the prison and then led to a classroom where a few of the staff spoke with us about the country's view on prisons and the actual prison itself. In viewing the prison, it seemed ... read more
Costa Rica - Day 2
Published: March 7th 2009Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica » San José » San JoséToday was our opportunity to explore the city a bit and learn about the history within Costa Rica. Waking up early is always a struggle, but my roommate Amber and I made it down to breakfast with everyone else and as hotel guests, we were given free breakfast (again, the comida typica... never got old). The previous day, I had set up a water filtration system in our hotel room, because apparently the water can be a bit dicey. I boiled water with the coffee maker and filtered it through. Then I put the boiled water in the mini-fridge and when it cooled I had plenty of drinking water. I'm not normally worried about things like that, but, I was bored and McGuyvering a filtration system seemed like a good idea. Anyway, we grabbed water and ... read more
Mai and Daeng´s first week in San Jose Costa Rica. Thus far, the fruit expedition has been...fruit-less. It seems it´s not quite the right season except for sandia (watermelon) and papayas. unless you know of illegal fruit sellers who can hook us up with rambutan, please don´t hesitate to connect us. Otherwise, we´re having a great time and will write more when the keyboards don´t stick so much :-)... read more
Costa Rica - Day 1
Published: March 7th 2009Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica » San José » San JoséAfter departing Santa Ana (John Wayne Airport) it was an uneventful flight through Denver and on to San Jose. Denver was definitely chilly and our plane was slightly delayed due to ice accumulation on the plane. After defrosting the plane, we took off and arrived in Costa Rica around 7-8 am, a bit behind schedule. Our tourguide, Chris, was waiting at the airport to pick me up and take me to the hotel where all of the Chico crew were to be staying. We took a beautiful, scenic drive through Costa Rica with some amazing landscapes, palm trees, volcanoes, and what looked like industrial and residential areas. We arrived at the hotel and it was too early to check in, so Chris and I had breakfast at the hotel's restaurant. I ordered the "Comida Typica" or ... read more

Days 28-29 San Jose
Published: January 24th 2009Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica » San José » San JoséWe all managed to get up at 4.40am for the van to collect us & bring us to the ferry terminal. I was tired & hung over but I grabbed a coffee & I felt very serene crossing over a very placid lake Nicaragua. This time we got the larger ferry which is twice as fast as the chicken boat. We got a taxi to the Tica bus station & bought our tickets for San Jose. It was via the sapoa frontier that we crossed into Costa Rica. The city was like a ghost town because it was new years day. We checked into the Hotel Rincone . It was 2 minutes from the Jade Musuem where the closest atms are. We went into town for dinner that night but only 1 restaurant was open & ... read more
Reflections on Nicaragua
Published: January 3rd 2009Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica » San José » San JoséWe crossed the border of Penas Blancas into Costa Rica just before lunch on December 27th leaving Nicaragua behind after four months on its territory. So we feel a moment for a little reflection about this place and its people. When we meet and chat with other travellers and they ask us our thoughts about Nicaragua our normal opening gambit is something like ‘we really don’t understand the country, particularly the culture’. Awareness of our ignorance is important as our four month stay doesn’t qualify us to be anything more than vaguely trained observers. Interestingly those amongst the long serving expat community there don’t seem to have much clarity in their cultural diagnosis either. A large proportion of travellers who we’ve spoken to who’ve seen a good sweep of Central America place Nicaragua as their favourite ... read more
