I'm travelling in Costa Rica and Panama for a couple months. My friend Kendrick and I will be spending time on beaches, in cloud forests, volunteering, and napping in hammocks. I figured since I graduated I better continue my education elsewhere.

My ideas of what I was going to do this week changed over the weekend. I couldn't decide if I should go to the north for the mountains and cooler weather or go to León for some culture and beach opportunities. I ended up staying at Laguna de Apoyo. León during April is one of the hottest places in all of Central America. I couldn't do that. I can hardly stand the heat here sometimes--it's quite hot today. So then I debated going north to Matagalpa or Estelí per Pablo's recommendation. But I only had 3 days. The time lost due to travel and the heat and the fact that this place is a great place to be made my decision obvious to me, in fact I sort of had an epiphany during what I thought ... read more

For the past week, I've been volunteering at a small non-profit in Nicaragua called Estación Biológica, or GAIA Nicaragua on Laguna de Apoyo, outside the town of Masaya. I've been helping with the reforestation program. This place is quite the place, especially during Semana Santa. There's a lot of Nicaraguans vacationing so the beach is really busy and there have even been a couple drownings--Lucia the cook told me yesterday. One boy was 15. The lake is really neat. I've been swimming multiple times everyday since I've been here, including night swims. The full moon was so great to swim under! My workload is relatively light, but its so hot. In the morning I water saplings, then breakfast is: cereal, usually granola, with fruit AND THEN gallo pinto with eggs. Then I've been collecting seeds, yesterday ... read more

Kendrick wasn't feeling well enough to try the overnight volcano hike on tuesday. We hiked up a bit of the Quetzal Trail, in the rain, but we didn't see any Quetzals. It was still a very nice hike. Wednesday Kendrick turned to me and said he had a crazy proposition for me. In short, we set out for Barú around 1130. The hike was a killer. We made it up in about 5 hours and stayed on top for about an hour and a half, starting down while the sunset was in its final stages. The super bright half moon stayed pretty much overhead and we didn't need our flashlights until about half way down. We were so tired toward the end. A group of guys from McGill University that we met at the top gave ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Panama » Chiriquí » Boquete March 22nd 2010

Greetings from Boquete! We stayed on a few extra days at Lost and Found pushing our departure to Sunday. Kendrick has been feeling feverish so we stayed an extra night to help him recover. We got a ride to David from Andrew and said our goodbyes to Duncan. A lot of goodbyes in the last week... Our time at Lost and Found was well spent. We didn't plan the ne treasure hunt, but we certainly helped out. We spent a lot of time around the hostel, basically running the place, it was a lot of fun. The location was stellar. Clouds literally swept through the place. We had some parties and some very mellow times. The cooking and creativity were off the charts. We ate a lot. I made bread for the first time, and it ... read more

I don't know what happened, but before I left Bocas del Toro, I posted a new entry but it never got put up. Basically, Tortuga Feliz was awesome, as was the rest of Carribean CR. Bocas was so/so. Now we are at Lost and Found in Chiriqui provence, Panamá. Now we are in a town called Gualaca about half hour drive from the hostel, no headphones. It's a lot warmer down here than at the hostel! Here's what we've been doing: Monday: We arrived from Bocas after about 3 hours of travel. We had to walk up this really steep hill, but very quickly we learned that Lost and Foiund is in an amazing place. There are views of Volcan Barú and at times the clouds engulf you. The sunset was spectacular and we had chicken ... read more

I gotta stay away from falafel because I don't think it quite sat well with me. So that's how my day started. Sleep was great last night. In the morning a kid came in from the night and we discovered that we were at UCC at the same time, with the same major only his was there as an Irish student. Poor guy had his backpack stolen which had his passport in it. I left the hostel and checked out Parque La Sabana, San Jose's largest park, it was very nice. The national stadium is there and it is currently being renovated, or something. Then I went to the central market and that was really cool--had lunch, arroz con pollo. Didn't find a hammock I wanted so I went to the artisanal market and bartered with ... read more

I'm here in San Jose! Finally, after quite the day of travel. My spanish needs work and I need to get used to the currency. Also, I really need some sleep. After finally getting on the plane, I had a hard time handling the first flight, I thought I might be having a panic attack, but I settled down pretty quick, I guess flying just does that to me sometimes. Didn't really sleep until my layover and I passed out by the payphones until some guy started yelling to somebody on the phone about Dubai and how long it had taken him to get from there to Bagdad and to Atlanta. Arrival in Costa Rica was simple, checked my passport in no time...after waiting in line for a while. Got my bag, got my bags scanned ... read more

My bags are packed and my stomach's a flutter. Time to travel again. This time I'm heading to Costa Rica. There I will meet up with Kendrick at La Tortuga Feliz on the Carribean coast and spend a week there volunteering to help the turtles. We'll be patroling the beaches in the madrugada in an effort to keep the eggs out of the hands of the poachers. From there we're heading down the coast towards Panama, staying in a town or two in CR before we cross into Panama. In Panama we'll spend some time in Bocas del Toro. From there a 2-week volunteer stint at Lost and Found Lodge Eco Resort in the cloud forest will bring us into mid-March. The plan is to summit Volcan Baru (the highest point in Panama), finish our ... read more
