Today I navigated my way through the underground, trying to find my way to the new hotel. I had forgotten to take the address of the hotel were we were all supposed to be meeting at, so I texted my two brothers in England, Oliver and Freddie. Low and behold 10 mins later Freddie was the first to text back with the address and funnily enough sent me on a wild goose chase across Cairo to a street with the same name as the one with the hotel on...oh well...that is the way to learn! I eventually asked a taxi driver and he proceeded to take me 3 miles back across town the way I had come. Thank you Freddie! :) The following day we went to the Egyptian Museum and of course the ever famous ... read more

I had forgotton the stresses of travelling. Walking through the airport at Heathrow and the screen tells me my flight is boarding but no gate number shows itself. No staff members are to be seen and a brief thought flashes through my mind that trouble is starting and I haven't even left the country! My trip to Egypt was last minute, thinking about it on the Monday (the idea came from a travel book), booking on the tuesday and leaving on the Friday. Impulse desicions are the way I like it, it's so much more exciting that way. First contact of the journey - an Egyptian couple give me their phone number, 'Any help you need just call us!'. I got into Cairo airport at 6:30pm, walking through the mob of Egyptian men holding up placards ... read more

Middle East » Turkey » Central Anatolia » Cappadocia October 19th 2008

The pictures you have all been waiting for, I promise you will not be disappointed. This was the highlight of my trip, it was fantastic and I would recommend it to anyone. I'll start from the beginning! Will and I were picked up from our hotel at 5:55am and taken to the Kappadokia Balloons Office to meet with the rest of the group. After establishing which direction the wind was going and using a test balloon we were loaded into the mini bus and taken to our take-off site. It was so exciting, being up and about in the magical sunrise, the sun starting to shine down on Goreme, the local town. Two balloon baskets were offloaded from the trailers and the huge balloons were unrolled. Cold air fans were used to fill the balloon with ... read more

Oludeniz; land of the Paragliders, of course we had to do it! We set off at half eight in the morning and tore around cliff edges in a Landrover, it was alarming to say the least. We arrived, unpacked and promptly took off, each with an experienced glider. We had to run as fast as we could down a hill to get the lift. I have some videos but they don't work at the moment. The ride was very peaceful, stress free and rather slow. A great experience though and what a view! ... read more

Middle East » Turkey » Aegean » Fethiye October 16th 2008

After our few days of site seeing it was time to do something different, so we drove to Oludeniz, just past the fishing village of Fethiye. Full of English tourists it was different....anyway, it was nice to lay here for a few days and catch some sun on the beach. Oludeniz is a hot sky sport destination and people come from all over the world to launch of Mt. Baba at 2000m. Endless streams of paragliders would float through the sky and down to the beach A few times we saw them get tangled in their parachutes (doing stunts) and fall, unable to do anything about it, and fall into the sea like a dead weight. The sea rescue would then go as fast as they could to save them! We had a lazy few days ... read more

Middle East » Turkey » Aegean » Pamukkale October 14th 2008

The day after Ephesus, we whizzed of to Pammukale, a 3 hour drive. The City of Hierapolis lies here and was founded in the 2nd century BC. The Romans came here to take advantage of the mineral rich water which was believed to be essential for health and cure illnesses. The hot water makes its way out of the ground, depositing calcium, filling up the pools and continues down the hill into the town. The ruins start with a very large cemetery just outside the city walls, with numbers still engraved on the tomb stones. Then you make your way through the arches that are the entrance to the city, stumbling on mounds of boulders, collapsed in years before. The city also boasts a 25,000 seat theatre which is just spectacular, at the moment it is ... read more

Middle East » Turkey » Aegean » Selçuk October 10th 2008

From Istanbul we flew to Izmır, a 1 hour flight as opposed to a 12 hour bus journey, this was to be a difficult choice... At the airport we hired a car where Will did an exceptional job of driving us south to Selçuk. It was quite exciting to be let loose on foreign roads without a decent road map! An hour or so drive and we arrived, found some good accommodation with lovely people and proceeded to Ephesus for the afternoon. Ephesus, also know as Efes has been around since 5000BC. It is assumed that it was inhabited by the Ions first of all, the Kimmers, Lydians, the Persians and then the Romans. It is the Roman city we see today which dates from 300BC. I found it fascinating wanderıng through the ruins. A library ... read more

Middle East » Turkey » Marmara » Istanbul October 8th 2008

We had our first encounter with a Turk on the plane. She told us which transport to use once in Istanbul, where not to go and who not to trust. She even offered us her phone number in case we needed help in anyway. This was the first but not the last encounter with the Turks who were so helpful to us on our travels. I even left our camera in a restaurant at one point and a local came running and shouting to us at the top of his voice, Oi, Oi, camera! What a disaster that could have been (like our previous trip ın South America where we had our bags stolen and managed to come home with hardly any photos to show for our two months). What a breath of fresh air where ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » Yungas Road February 29th 2008

Up at 6, walking through the rain, breakfast at 7:30 and off in a bus with 3 guides and 6 other people. We climbed to 4750m (this will be the highest we have been and will go). At 4750m we all got out of the bus sporting not waterproof trousers, a black jacket, a white waterproof jacket, gloves, helmet, a buff and goggles. We were assigned a bike each with pretty impressive front and back wheel suspension. The guide Matt was great, giving us tips on how to ride your mountain bike fast, how to adjust your weight etc - this all might seem pretty standard stuff but it helped alot! We set off in the snow and mountains down 34km of tarmac. Zooming around twisty roads with waterfalls and steep drops, overtaking lorries! At about ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » Potosi February 25th 2008

We are now at the highest city in the world. Lying at 4100m, Potosi offers spectacular views and breathing difficulties. Yesterday we did a bit of walking to man made lakes against a skyline of snowcapped mountains and today we went on a tour of the mines. In a group of 7 we were kitted out with yellow trousers, a yellow top, a yellow hard hat and black boots. We proceeded to the market to buy gifts for the miners such as soft drinks, cigarettes, coca leaves (the starting element for cocaine) and dynamite. We were taken to the entrance of the mine at 4500m and shown an explosion with the dynamite and we then walked into the mountain. Not really my choice of a fun day out but it's only your mind that makes things ... read more
