South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » Tupiza February 25th 2008

From Salta we bused 7 hours to the border towns ( La Quaica on the Argentine side and Villazon on the Bolivian side). With another stamp in our passport we then proceeded a further 3 hours to Tupiza, 3000m above sea level. He we did a day tour which consisted of seeing the views in a Jeep and on bikes. The last bike ride in the evening we were taken up to 3700m and told to ride 'slowly' back to Tupiza and to keep control around the winding paths with huge drops. What spectacular views though - as you can see from the photo's. On the 21st of Feb, at 7pm, we got the night train to Uyuni which arrived at 2am. We decided to get the train because this form of transport is a rarity ... read more

South America » Argentina » Salta » Salta February 20th 2008

From Buneos Aires we flew to Salta, in the north of Argentina. Just a few hours in a plane but not very nice. Every flight we have been on near or over the Andes has had some horrible turbulance, pretty frightening stuff. Anyway after landing in Salta like a Yo-Yo, we arrived in a tranquill and friendly city. The following day we went riding, of course you have to ride in Argentina! We had a bbq with consisted of plate after plate of meat, salad and wine, during which a boy was practicing lassooing the horses in the paddock. What patient and kind horses, to not lash out when this boy just chased them round and round in the heat! The horses we actually well looked after and so I was quite happy to go out ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires February 15th 2008

After Trajillo we spent some time in Huaraz, 3056 m above sea level, probably the highest we´ve been yet. Surrounded by white mountains it was pretty spectacular. After much deliberation of how the rest of our trip was going to go, we bought flights from Lima (Peru) to Buenos Aires to stay for a few days and another flight from Buenos Aires to Salta. (From Salta we will go into Bolivia and then back into Peru.) Have a look on a map...it´s quite a stretch! So we arrived in Buenos Aires on Tuesday the 12th to something a bit different to what we´ve usually been staying in. It is a hostel, with rooms around a courtyard, on two levels, painted green and yellow. There is a kitchen, outside loos and showers, a piano, a television, a ... read more

South America » Peru » La Libertad » Trujillo February 6th 2008

After staying in a dismal town called Alausi we pretty much stayed on a bus for the next few days. We stayed in Cuenca where the room was so horrific (the bathroom looked like something out of a horror film) that after a few beers for supper, we booked into somewhere else with only the clothes on our back. After Cuenca was another bus to Tumbes, the border town of Ecuador and Peru. In Peru we went on to Piura and then the next day we arrived in Trajillo, a huge bustling city where at every intersection of road, whoever gets there first has right of way! It has been good to stop for a few days and gather our senses! We visited a 'black beach' that Will was quite pleased about and we also visited ... read more

South America » Ecuador » Centre » Riobamba February 6th 2008

The bus from Baños to Riobamba did not take long, although we were somewhat disheartened by the torrential rain cascading from the skies and filling up the road in torrents. It made the huge potholes even worse and the suspension on the bus reaching its ultimatum! Once there, I am ashamed to say, we went into a fast food restaurant and had burger, chips and coke. It was actually very nice...nothing like the rubbish we have. The following day we boarded a very late train with a hell of alot of foriengers... The train consisted of a 3 passenger carrienges, a cargo carriage and a huge engine. We set of through endless patchwork hills, chugging along on a single track, nailed down on bits of driftwood. The scenery was just fantastic, it had rained the night ... read more

South America » Ecuador » Centre » Baños January 27th 2008

On Thursday we left Quito and got a 4 hour bus journey to Baños, literally meaning ´baths´. The scenery here is more fantastic than where we were before. Baños is a small town situated at 1800m, with luschious hills surrounding it. For the last few days we have been hiking, along paths with donkeys carrying tomatoes, banana trees looming above and bulls in the way. A few times we had to take a small detour up the hill to evade these onlooking eyes....! Yesterday we walked around the other side of town to the Mirador del Volcan (Lookout for the Volcano). This volcano is still on red alert from 2000 when the whole town had to be evacuated. Sometimes, if you listen carefully, you can here a quiet thunder and then large amounts of black smoke ... read more

South America » Ecuador » North » Mitad del Mundo January 27th 2008

So after some pretty horrific turbulance on both flights, Will and I arrived safely to the second highest airport in the world, Quito, standing at 2850m (about 9000ft). Quito is a big city of 1.2m people but no hustle and bustle. No-one seems to be in the least bit interested in us, and what a great feeling that is! We are not hassled to buy anything, no foot polishers chase us down the street and in fact no-one seems to look at us atall! So far all the food has been amazing. Fruit, fruit juice, coffee and croissants for breakfast and chicken soup with bits of bone marrow floating in it for lunch. It doesn´t sound appetizing but is probably the equivalent to one of our oxo cubes! So much nicer! On Wednesday we got a ... read more

Dharamsala November 6th - 24th 2006 The light began to dawn and the weary travellers saw out the bus window, through the fog to rolling mountains and steep drops. Villagers outside walked up the roads, herding cattle or getting water from the taps for their daily needs. The scenery was absolutely fantastic, no more than 10 feet of straight road at a time and a beautiful river that we kept on crossing backwards and forwards; whilst we made our way up and up into the mountains. Somewhat maybe 2 hours later we were still going up! I just couldn’t believe it. A girl called Ashley called from the back of the bus ‘KATE!’ I thought someone had died, but no it was just Ashley, what I would later get to know is that she was ... read more

Asia » India » Tamil Nadu » Ooty January 15th 2007

After getting on buses, getting off again and then waiting for a while, I eventually found the right bus to Ooty, that was actually going there. We left with a bus loads of people, my bags by my feet so my knees were close to my chest and two guys sat, one on the toher's laps. Was pretty funny. After a while the road got steeper and stepper and turned into hairpin bins, careering around cliff tops...and still we went up! The air got cooler and the smell of greenery came out, such a nice change! Absolutely fantastic scenery huge hills, lots of trees and grass, if a little dry, none the less, still beautiful. I arrived in Ooty in the afternoon. It is an old hill station that the british occupied sometime ago. It is ... read more

Asia » India » Karnataka » Mysore January 13th 2007

I got the night train from Hospet to Mysore on the 11th, arrived in Bangalore at half 6 in the morning and then jumped on another train to Mysore. It is a big city but hardly any hassle, nice people, a calm place. So very different! First I walked through the early morning market, such fantastic colours and smells, all that glorious fruit and vegatables! Then walked up a huge hill, 1000 steps to a temple, then a few palaces. I am not staying here for long, off tomorrow to continue my anticlockwise circle trip bag to the coast, heading up to Mumbai. More photos to be added later.... read more
