Arrived in Bangkok late on the night of the 2nd March. The ride from the airport was everything we expected...even though the road is marked quite clearly two lanes the cab drivers still use it as their personal speedway and often are at least three cars wide. It seems the speed limit signs are only there to take up space cause no one seems to take them seriously. The hotel we are staying at is great..the staff friendly and helpful and the pool is the best thing on the a hot afternoon. Speaking of hot it has been at least 36 degrees every day with high humidity. Saturday we spent the day getting orientated....just trying to figure out where you are can make you sweat!!! Sunday was market day...the mother of all markets..everything under the sun ... read more

The quaint town of Luang Prabang ascends from the banks of the mighty Mekong revealing a unique combination of French and Lao architecture. Upon first arrival, you might think you have just floated down the Seine rather than the Mekong with grand French columns and dining Europeans gracing open terraces. As a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1995, Luang Prabang's uniqueness is guaranteed preservation with over 100 buildings and wats (temples) being restored and strict restrictions on new buildings. Mark and I quickly learned of Luang Prabang's popularity as we were turned away from three booked guest houses. Sweating and tired from two days on the Mekong, we just wanted a shower and a bed. We finally found one tucked away down a quaint alley, but for three times as much as we paid in Thailand. ... read more

Hey Folks, Thats right, some American came to ZhongDian maybe a hundred years ago, and wrote in his very famous book that the city was so perfect, it must be Shangri-la. So, the Chinese, never ones to miss a beat, renamed the homely Tibetan city of ZhongDian, you guessed it, Shangri'la. Since then, tourism has boomed, and everyone is happy, except of course the Tibetans who lived their. As I have learned, even in the more developed parts of their invaded plateau, they still prefer to live in the countryside, raising their yaks, and praying, while entrapreneurial Chinese flock to their cities to sell knives and prayer wheels. This is an interesting country indeed. So, I have recently returned from Yunnan province. This is the most diverse province in China. It boasts home to 26 of ... read more

Day 1: KL - Bangkok - Sukhothai Day 2: Sukhothai Day 3: Sukhothai - Si Satchanalai - Sukhothai - Ayutthaya (night bus) Day 4: Ayutthaya Day 5: Ayutthaya - Kanchanaburi Day 6: Kanchanaburi - Damnoen Saduak Day 7: Damnoen Saduak - Bangkok Day 8: Bangkok Day 9: Bangkok - KL Day 1 18/02/07 - 往素可泰 于11时半抵达曼谷的新机场,出了关卡,在两位热心的泰国华人协助下,搭了机场免费的巴士到机场巴士总站,再从巴士总站乘搭前往位于曼谷Mochit的北部巴士总站,每人20B。

Dear all, its getting very hard to update my journals on-line in Asia. Connections are slow, they keep crashing and its taking me longer to update my blog due to the immense waste of time as these crashes occur. So here is an update or synopsis of what has happened since China. I travelled from South to North of Vietnam in just under a month through February. I was on the move after every 2 days and it took on average 24 hours on various modes of public transport to get to my next destination. Overall, I found Vietnam to be a very tourist orientated country and as such everyone is after your dollar, they have little interest in you other than that dollar. This makes the people at times very rude, in fact Vietnamese in ... read more

One of the things I love about China is the plethora of fake and copy-cat brands and products. While there is a small corner of my brain that is offended at the flagrant copywrite and trademark abuse, most of my brain is amused by how flagrant it is and delights in the "Name this fake" game. It isn't just clothing and other products that are copied, but also restaurants - there's a chain of Chinese fast-food restaurants that uses a red and white sign with a face of an old Chinese man who looks remarkably like Colonel Sanders. And please don't get the impression that rip-offs are limited to Western brands. There is a famous Chinese hot-pot restaurant in Shenzhen called Little Sheep. (Hot-pot uses a lot of lamb.) Little Sheep is always crowded and you ... read more

Tom speaking: My turn to have a blog... I've been letting Bry get on with it as I've been busy sorting photos and stuff. So we arrived on the train from Singapore after an 8am border crossing from Malaysia - very inefficient as they pile everyone off the train, do immigration, scan bags, get everyone back on the train. I would have thought the Singaporeans of all people would have something cleaner sorted out. Maybe I'm just whingeing 'cos I wanted to stay in bed longer! So we had booked into a pretty good hotel in Singapore with really cool central Atrium which was well impressive. As it was Saturday night we headed over to Clarke Quay, which is not dissimilar from the waterfront area in Bristol (bars, restaurants, etc.) but with less pikeys and generally ... read more

A couple of days ago we travelled up the island to Long Beach, which is an amazingly long stretch of beautiful soft sand. However, we decided that the quantity of bars along the beach probably meant that this would not be the place for us at night (far too loud). Yesterday I had another massage (it seemed a shame not to use the second discount voucher). I finally got the courage to try a Thai massage, which is all about putting pressure on your 'Zen' lines and quite a lot of stretching. Given the nature of the massage, I was given a change of clothes - a top and the biggest pair of trousers ever (fortunately they could be tied at the waist). I was then escorted to the massage platform which is located in a ... read more
