Arriving in Phnom Penh we were greeted at okay guesthouse by Peter, a local Tuk Tuk driver with a winning smile. Peter drove us around the city and showed us the sites, answering all our questions along the way. He took us to a fantastic loacl BBQ spot, not a tourist in sight, plenty of beer with ice and delicious food! so if you need a guide for Phnom Penh , local cuisine, and information, please contact Peter: peter_y84@yahoo.com ph; (855) 16719553 [View Full Entry]

Among Kanchanaburi's marvels, is the tiger temple, Wat pa Luangta Bua Yannasampanno forrest monastery, saiyok district. We caught a local bus 45 mins out of Kanchanaburi, and were dropped out on a dirt road, it was hot and we had a 3km walk up to the temple. ( as you can see we are determined to do these things ourselves, no tour needed!) We must have look tired because a tuk tuk stopped and gave us a free lift. :) This temple is a must for all travellers, it is a real conservation project and it is going ahead with big [View Full Entry]

Pip and i went and visited the war Memorial and the famous Bridge over the river Kwae. It was a very sad moment when you realised how many lives were lost during WWII to build the burmese -thai railway. I also found memorial plaques from my Grandad's unit - "the loyals"- i have put these photos on for him to see.-- the memorial is beautifully looked after and i know he would be very happy to see this and also very sad. We finally have our beach-hunting skills honed to perfection! On both Ko Samui and later on Ko Pha Ngan, we found delightful areas with at least a little village atmosphere squeezed in amongst the tourism. While we were in Mae Nam (Samui) Chinese New Year was celebrated amid gongs and firecrakers louder than cannons. Chalok Lom on Pha Ngan was a much more serene fishing village, where the catches of squid were laid out on the beach to bake in the sun alongside the tourists. [View Full Entry]

Beaches, beaches, beaches.......and more yes you guessed it beaches!!!!! along with Falong every step of the way. Katey, pip and Jess left Talok Bahang destined for thailands' famed southern beaches. first stop Langkawi, where we discovered the joys of hiring a scooter to whiz around the island, much to the amuzement of the Macaques who lined the roads. Next stop, Krabi, the jumping off point to Ko Phi Phi and Ko Lanta. Krabi itself was enjoyable enough, but our experiences of phi phi and lanta were disappointing at best. The man climbing in our bedroom window at 4.30 am, and Pip [View Full Entry]

The next bus-ride had it's ups and downs (and very little suspension). On the gloomy side some nicompoop with the flu got on and via the airconditioning gave it to me and at least 3 other people. However back on the sunny side, and much more importantly, we met Katy! Katy is perhaps the smileyest person I've ever met, did animal sciences at uni (points with pip) doesn't like plans or schedules (points with Jess) reads the New Scientist and even had a copy with her (many points with pip) and is a diehard extravert (gold stars from Jess). She immediately [View Full Entry]
