There hasn't been too much going on recently and I've been really tempted to just post pictures, but I'll give you a run down of what I've been doing (and then some) I already mentioned meeting up with that soon-to-be classmate. Afterwards, Jiawei and I went to my Uncle's friend's house for a karaoke filled dinner. It would have been really funny, but I was pretty tired and suffocating from sitting around with 5 people smoking in each other's faces. The next day I stayed in the apartment with my cousin and my aunt. We slept really late and pretty much did nothing all day. I watched pirated Madagascar and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Haha and if you care, I recommend Madagascar and think that Tim Burton has issues. Yesterday, my cousin and her family ... read more

We had a great time in Shanghai. Like any large city, with only seven days one can only catch a glimpse of local life and see the mainstay of the tourist attractions, which is what we did. It was very easy to spend our days zenning around and taking things in. We saw the Bund, Pudong area, people square, Yuyan gardens, the impressive Shanghai Museum, the Art Gallery and the very kitsch sightseeing tunnel to name a few, some photos are below. My favourate was peoples square, a large open central park which containing the grand theatre, art gallery and museum, and surrounded by Shanghaiese skyscrapers has a captivating atmosphere which has stuck with me. We spent many enjoyable hours just sitting here (some recovering from hangovers) chatting and watching the Chinese. Chinese New Year (29th ... read more

Hiya sorry for not updating in the last few days. Here's what's been going on...The pictures are from Jan. 30 when my Aunt took me and my cousin to Zhongshan park. I sort of remembered the park from when I was little, though I didn't remeber it being so pretty. After walking around for a while we came to an area where there was music playing and all these people were watching a bunch of middle aged people dance. Anyone who felt the urge could join in, and before we knew it my cousin and I were giggling at my Aunt while she danced with a friend. When the song finished my aunt told me to dance with her, so before I knew it my cousin was giggling at me and I was tripping over my ... read more

After a firecracker filled night I woke up to more firecrackers. I got out of bed at nine since my eldest aunt and uncle (da jiu ma & da jiujiu) were taking me to their relatives' house for lunch. Haha actually, I had no idea where I was going or why I was there. All I knew was that I didn't know these people and I didn't want to eat. But it's gotten to the point where I eat out of fear. Conversations usually go something like this: Eat! Quickly, eat! No thank you I'm full. Ok, just a little bit. You try it! Here (places heaping chopstick full of food into my bowl) this is very tasty! Ok, thank you (lungs give way to expanding stomach). Anyways, the rest of the day was quite fun. ... read more

Shanghai - 27.01.06 It was an exciting moment to arrive in Shanghai, the largest city in China and known far and wide as 'the whore of the orient.' What better place to spend Chinese New Year, the biggest festival in the Chinese calendar welcoming in the year of the dog. We hit a slight problem though when we realised that we couldn't actually afford to stay anywhere! All the hotels were far too expensive especially considering that we wanted to spend a week exploring the city. This meant our only remaining option was one I had been pretty reluctant to try; dorms... They are by far the cheapest way for travellers to have a room for the night but done at the risk of having to share it with some noisy, messy, snoring hippie with greasy ... read more

Xin nian kuai le! First let me say that I always enjoyed celebrating the chinese new year at home (I mean what 10 year old can argue with free food and and a free dollar, right Elizabeth?), but in China it's craziness (and I just stayed in with family.) The day essentially consisted of nonstop eating, and if there was a theme I would have to say it was eat and be noisy. My relatives started coming in at lunch time to eat hun dun soup (boiled meat and vegetable dumplings that look like the gold peices people used back in the day.) Then we busted out all the snacks and treats we had in the house so that everyone could sit around and chat until it came time for some serious majiang. Soon it was ... read more

Yesterday I went sight seeing with my uncle Herong jiujiu in Old Shanghai and at the waterfront called the Bund (isn't that just an awful name for such a pretty place?) On the bus ride there I determined that people spend an absurd amount of time waiting to get places (I don't know what my rush is...it's not like i need to get anywhere on time.) Outside of the Old City people were buying last minute new years decorations. While I was waiting for my uncle to buy plastic bags (I wonder what he needed them for...) I decided it was the perfect opportunity to fiddle around with my camera, hence the attempts at more interesting pictures. Inside the Old City there were beautiful lanterns strung everywhere for the new year and the lantern festival that ... read more

Hiiiiii finally!! Ok just to warn you in advance, this one is gonna be long and possibly pointless. So note to people lacking in common sense, don't attempt to use a computer set to a language you can't read. It just leads to breakage of internet connections and jeanette being desperate for email access. Since I missed a few fun-filled days I'll back track to the 22. Let's see Jan. 22...I sat around all day updating the blog then I sat around some more. For dinner my oldest cousin Shenkan took me and my other cousin Jiawei out to dinner. The food was delicious, but the conversation was...well lacking. I feel so bad, I can't understand anything. I think I also had my first AWESOME shower that night. Ok that's sounds really weird but understand it's ... read more

Dear Diary, Chinese food is soo damn good. Ok so the flight was very smooth. I sat next to a baby and a middle aged artist man. I got nervous and homesick for the first time when the plane was landing and I saw Shanghai's buildings. It hit me that I was here to stay for the next 4 and a half months with no chance of turning around to go home. I also realized I can't speak chinese...but whatever. All my relatives have been really nice. So far I've just been getting settled and spending time with relatives. I've also played badminton with my cousin and some girl and today my uncle took me to this...market thingie where they sold flowers and pets...that makes sense, right? All teh animals looked really pathetic. I felt so ... read more

Finally...the adventure begins. Thailand here I come! Yet first Jeff and I had a 10 hour layover in Shanghai. By taking China Eastern and having this layover in the Pudong Airport we saved $300 and got to spend a day in China!!!! Jeff and I paired up with two other English teachers in Hiroshima that were going to Myanmar, Larissa and Eric. I was a little worried at first since getting in and out of China usually requires a visa and a bunch of paper work. I mean...what if they never let us out of China once in? Worries aside we went into the city. It was quite interesting trying to get out of the airport. They had a special counter just for us 'transit' passengers and gave us really cool stickers to wear (sidenote: ... read more
