This Saturday we had a bit of a crazy day. After getting in from Bon Bon at 5am we decided to not waste the day as we usually do - so we didnt bother going to sleep. First we went to visit the temple next to our flat - dont think it was meant to be open but we went in anyway. It was very weird to have such a quiet tranquil place in this noisy, busy city. The we wandered the streets, had some strange street food - it was like a pancake with a fried egg, spicy sauce, chilis and corriander. We caught a cab to Dongtai Lu Antique market - this area of Shanghai is like real china - no sky scrapers, people doing their washing in the street, old guys playing majhong, ... read more

Shanghai is a LOT more westernised and dare I say it civilised than Beijing. The journey down was a great start. After getting Paddy on his first train journey in over a year (how the other half live!) it certainly lived up to its reputation as the nicest train in China. In fact it was nicer than most aeroplanes I have been on (even in first class). A western toilet AND a toilet seat cover....have we mistakenly arrived in Japan early?? We were, however, given little rest from the curiosity of the Chinese fellows in the carriage....although this time it was our chinaman friend who caused the stir. Fascinated by Paddy and his amazing Beijing accent we were pumped for information by all in sundry who wanted to practice their English or just find out at ... read more

did i tell you about the toilets??? i think this might be a shitty story for some but for others well its just how it is. there are a few basic varieties here - the one type is the one we are all familiar with with. There are a few of those about usually in our hostel and at some majorly western places. the next type is the starting block variety which is fine and they have been very clean and usually you get your own cubicle but the last sort is the open drain variety and i kid you not. its a long channel with cubicles of which the walls are about knee high and there is no door so you can see everything anyway. thats the way it is so i can do anything ... read more

well this is truely an amazing city and you dont feel like there are 16 million people here. I have never seen so many skyscrapers in my life and i must say that the architecture is amazing and there are some beautiful buildings here. I know for sure that I and my cousin Esme would never like to live in one of them though as i could not imagine having to go in one of those lifts every day!!!! It gives me heart palpitations just thinking about it. Our hostel is brand new and state of the art The Koala International Youth Hostel and the folk working there very friendly. Terry says it will probably be the best room we get in China and it will be hard to beat it. The shower had so many ... read more

Went to a club opening on Friday night. We had to catch a shuttle bus out of town, it took about 50 minutes to get there, so we weren't that impressed. There was only a handful of journalists at the club when we arrived. We were introduced to the club manager, who was unbelievably camp, but he paid for us all to have dinner in the very expensive restaurant below the club, which was quite good! After the meal we were taken to the club and spent about four hours drinking free champagne and talking to the 'erotic' dancers that the camp manager had provided for 'entertainment'. All in all it was quite a good evening, which like most evenings, ended up in another club at about 3am! ... read more

Saturday night we went to a special party at a restaurant called Kathleen's 5. Its inside the old race course club house, built by the british when they owned part of shanghai about 75 years ago. Very swanky - unlike us - we had watched the chelsea birmingham match followed by the bolton man utd match, and drunk lots. One of the guys here fell asleep and woke up, still in the bar at 10.30 the next day, the staff hadnt noticed him hidden behind a curtain!I was trying to get free drinks by prentending to be liam gallagher, which funnily enough didnt work, and another guy tried his luck as euan blair. We ended up stealing three bottles of wine and got more than a bit tipsy!... read more

Went to the opening of a club last night. Its called "snatch", possibly the worst name for a club ever, it's owned by a well connected guy from LA but it wasnt very good. The press only got two free beers - usually get trays and trays of champagne - and our promised interview never happened. This was the only photo I got because my camera ran out of battery! so not quite as planned but still had a good time. Off to another club launch tonight - this one looks a bit dodgey - go go dancers and erotic displays apparently! Well I'll let you know how it all goes - speak to you all soon Luke... read more

This was the indian buffet i went to the other night, had to write a review for our magazine, which i've posted below... Having recently arrived from Britain, a country obsessed with consuming curry and beer, I was ecstatic to discover the Shanghai Punjabi Restaurant. Fair enough the décor maybe tacky, O.K. the bhangra music in the background is deafening and yes, the displays of dancing from the staff are more than a bit clichéd, but they do an all you can eat Indian buffet for RMB80, which includes, and this is the best bit, all the beer you can drink. Housed in a concrete block, up two flights of stairs, overlooking a dingy alleyway, this certainly isn’t the classiest venue in Shanghai, but then, no one interested in stuffing their face with curry and downing ... read more
