It's 12:30 am and we leave at 6:30 am tomorrow for our trip to Xinjiang. The itinerary is so exciting and the place seems so exotic, that I've got to get it down: We leave tomorrow (March 31) and fly to Kashgar. We arrive at 5:30pm. April 1 - Go to the Karakul Lake surrounded by magnificent snow-capped mountains. Optional activity: horse or camel riding. about the camel riding - I'm really curious to see if I'll do it or not. Right now I'm really not sure how I feel about it. How do I feel about it? On the one hand, when else am I ever going to have a chance to ride a camel in the Chinese desert? I mean, talk about living this experience, the opportunity to ride on a camel might be ... read more

Got up really early yesterday to go on a trip to Chongming Island. It's a large island, about 80km by 15km, at the mouth of the yangzi river. We had to get up at 5 to catch the first ferry, which was a bit of a shock because its the time we usually come in. There were six of us on the trip, me, Jerome and Pippa, the three interns and Shamus, his wife and a chinese journalist Zat. Zat was born on Chongming Island so she came along to show us around. It was about an hour's ferry ride up the Huang Po river and in to the yangzi basin. When we arrived on the island we managed to arrange for a guy with a van to drive us round for the day. First we ... read more

First of all, I love my Chinese class (the one I have for two hours M-Thursday). And my god I really feel like I am getting so much better. And it's all happening so fast. We spent all of yesterday's class having a debate. Because I've finally learned how to become a slacker here when it comes to doing my work (I never thought this was possible, but I've learned how my brother does it, and now I'm pretty much putting in the minimum amount of time at home I need to to complete my assignments. And its weird because I am on the one hand motivated to do my Chinese work cause it is so relevant and I love the language, but it's never as fun as hanging out in the apartments and watching our ... read more

First, a brief re-cap of the weekend: Thursday was my roommate Jeanette's birthday (yay! I think it's possible I was more excited about it than she was) and it ended up being a great day all around. For dinner we went to an "authentic" japanese restaurant - it was the kind of place where you have to take your shoes off and sit on the mats, and I came to one conclusion about myself eating sushi while in China, and that is, I probably won't be doing it again. My choices at any sushi restaurant are pretty limited anyway, but they don't seem to have avocado here, so I'm basically limited to cucumber rolls. That and not being able to read either the Chinese or the Japanese on the menu is just not a good situation. ... read more

I got back super early yesterday morning from our weekend trip to Tai Shan! I've been told that I've been saying "incredible" too much, and using too many superlatives in general, so I'll try to cut down, but that'll have to be after I describe this past weekend. We knew it was going to be fun the moment we boarded the overnight train that left from Shanghai at about 10pm and arrived in Tai Shan at 5:30 am. The kind of sleeper we took is called a rough sleeper (although the English translations of the Chinese signs say "rigidty sleeper") and on the way there we were really lucky that all 60 or so of us on the program were in the same car. Each car was split into segments with 6 bunks - 2 top, ... read more

My teaching schedule means that I finish at 11.30am on Fridays and don't recommence until 7.50am on the following Tuesday. So it's time to spread the wings and head to Shanghai "town"! Shanghai is an uneventful (except for the often chaotic traffic!) 3.5hr bus ride from Taizhou. Life has been made easier for me this visit as my old school pal Judy Ashcroft and her husband Brian are in town. They have kindly extended me an invitation to stay with them. Their apartment is right downtown in Huaihai Zudong Lu and a short 5 minute walk from the metro. We are on the 20 something floor with almost 360 degree views of the Shanghai skyline- absolutely spectacular, day or night! On arrival, Jude warmly welcomed me and we started to talk animatedly, the years melting away ... read more
