Shanghai, Huangzhou & Yellow Mountain As you can probably tell from our ongoing eunthusiastic tales - we've had an amazing time in China. This is finally our last installment for what has been an amazing, but very full on 25 days! But before I wrap up with the final leg of our journey, I want to make a note on Chinese food. And quite simply - it has been amazing. Of all the meals we've had, short of a few dodgey breakfasts, and the occasional oily dinner, we've had some of THE most yummy dishes we could ever have hoped for. From Yanghou's "tofu stuffed with vegetables", Chongquing's "bok choy with mushroom" and "pork with bamboo", Xian's dumplings and Beijing's "beijing duck" (surprise suprise) - it has been a culinary wonderland. Then to top it ... read more

Hi all, Spent yesterday having a "rest", all the walking and sight seeing has battered our feet into a smelly mess! Ended up having a few beers in the bar with an Irish couple from Dublin who had just spent a year teaching English in Japan. They are travelling roughly the same path as us through Asia before heading to India and then back to Ireland! Got up this morning and headed over to Pudong on the eastern bank of the river. Decided to take the local transport again and hopped onto the river boat ferry for about 3p! It was interesting to mingle with the locals and smile politely as they all stare at you. I got the impression that not many Western people get the public ferry, which isn't really surprising as it would ... read more

hello, Laura - Still in Shanghai til Monday, then we get a train to Beijing overnight. It was such a hassle getting train tickets - we ended up going to the train station twice, couldn't get tickets on the day we hoped, and had the only ones left were 1st class (at least we get to travel in style!). Not to mention the irritation of queuing in a 50 people queue in a country where pushing in right at the front desk is perfectly acceptable! So we find ourselves with a few days extra to spare in Shanghai. We had a chill out day yesterday and stayed in the hostel until dinner (partly because we'd been woken up in the early hours by the sound of a wall being demolished in our hostel). Today we went ... read more

Hi! Still in Shanghai and at the moment we are not sure how much longer we are going to be here. On a whim we decided the other day that we'd go to a place called Tai Shan to climb this mountain (as you do). But, after looking into it a bit more we're not sure this will be possible now because there's a festival on from the 1st May and it may be too difficult to get an onwards train to Beijing (where we have booked accommodation for the 1st). So, we're here for the time being until we find the best way out! We went on a river cruise up the Huangpu river today, which was really cool as it gives you the best views of the new and old buildings that line either ... read more

Well hi everyone. We touched down in Pudong International Airport two days ago now and caught the fastest train in the world to Shanghai which was a pretty cool way to get there. No problems getting anything so far but I'm sure the Chinese just humour me when I attempt the language. Got to our hotel pretty easily but was harrassed on the way by 70,000 people (unofficial figure) shouting "HELLO!" and "Do you wanna buy DVD, watch or shoes?" Pretty amusing the first 3 times. Not so much now. Managed to stay awake all day and got an excellent nights sleep. Shanghai is amazing. The road we are on is called Nanjing Dong Lu and is the main shopping street. Neon lights everywhere and everything seems to be either yellow, orange or bright red. They ... read more

There was a weird vibe this week, and I'm pretty sure that everyone felt it too. It's April 20th; We came February 20th; And in just over a month, June 4th, most of us will be leaving. The reality of how little time we have left here has recently become clear when we've been trying to plan all of the traveling we've been meaning to do, and feel like we should do before we go home, and then we've all realized that for many of us this means that we won't have any weekends left in Shanghai. This realization has meant a lot of things - 1 is that Wednesday has become the new Thursday. Tonight's a perfect example of this. Whereas Thursday nights have typically been the best night of the weekend for going out, ... read more

Weekends normally start here on Thursday nights, but this Thursday night was a little different. After Wednesday night's seder was not very much of a success, we had the great idea of doing our own seder at the apartments on Thursday night. This was a great idea for many reasons, mainly that it would feel much more like home, would be much more personal, and for what I think was by far the most important reasons - that way, we could include all of our non-Jewish friends, and invite anyone who was remotely curious about it. The most exciting part for me was, well was really a mixture of things, but definitely the fact that my Chinese teacher Guo Laoshi (she's the cutest woman ever, and while it's really tricky to be able to tell how ... read more

4. Hell ... read more

Okay just one more... I arrived in Shanghai around 8pm Tuesday night and as I stepped off the plane I was greeted by a small asian man holding a sign with my name. He then lead me in the direction of customs where I managed to conquer all the long line-ups and headed for my baggage shortly after. It was after my baggage pick up that I was rushed out the doors of the airport and into a shuttle. I was the only person in it and no one spoke any english to me really, they just pointed at things so I wasn't entirely clear of what was happening. The man driving the shuttle crazily drove me to a hotel near the airport to stay the night until the next day when I could catch my ... read more
