A very incomplete list: NEW LOVES: 1. ~Street Food~ My favorite part of the day now just may be lunchtime, when we take the bus to East China Normal University campus in enough time to partake in the wonders of cheap, cheap, cheap & greasy Chinese food that's sold on the street. I'll have to admit that my first day I was a little timid and stuck with what I know, chao mian (stir-fried noodles) for 3 kuai (If 8 kuai is a dollar, that's less than 50 cents). Yesterday I went with the recommendations & had a Chinese-version of a burrito?, which was basically a crepe with egg and some greens and something brown that is supposedly bean curd sauce, for 2 kuai. It was incredible! Today I had a most interesting lunch of a ... read more

I've been in Shanghai for nearly 24 hours and I was correct in assuming that it would be a good place to start my second trip to China. Generally, getting around is easy and I haven't had to much problem find inexpensive and filling food. I arrived yesterday afternoon (March 1st) about 3 in the afternoon, got myself through customs, found someone to ask directions for the Maglev train and caught it to Shanghai. Now, this Maglev is pretty cool...we were travelling at 430 kph at it's fastest and it got me near Shanghai in just a few minutes. It was expensive by China standards, but it was worth the price. I then transfered to the metro carrying my huge backpack and then, carefully following the directions, I made my way to the Hiker Youth Hostel. ... read more

So this is coming a couple of days after the fact. On the way home from our first day of the Scavenger Hunt all around Shanghai, I was riding back on the super-crowded Metro. When I turned around to look at my bag, I realized it was completely unzipped, which I thought was weird. I started looking through it and then basically started hyper-ventilating because my wallet wasn't there. After checking it again and again to make sure, it was pretty clear that I had been pickpocketed. So sucky because I lost all of my credit cards & my ATM card & drivers liscence & health insurance card, etc, all of the things you make sure you have before traveling in a foreign country. And it was also so sad because god knows what I keep ... read more

Not much to say really. Kind of depressing not being able to speak that much Chinese. Anyway, here are some pics. If it didn't take so damn long to upload these photos, I'd put more up.... read more

I've had two experiences crossing the English-Chinese language barrier so far that I'm proud of. The other night a group of us went out to dinner at a kind of food court, and everyone ended up going to a hibachi place. I didn't want to eat anything there, so I sat with everyone while they were eating, and at the end I went to a different stand and tried to order tofu kebabs to go. In the end I ended up with some kind of tofu soup, but that was besides the point. Anyway, I didn't have a clue how to say "to go," so I told the cashier in Chinese that "I want to go home." And she understood what I meant! She immediately began putting my food in a plastic bag. That was awesome. ... read more

It's about time I start writing, now that I have just about survived my first week in Shanghai! Almost every day I've been here, I've had a few weird and certainly memorable experiences, and from now on I'll try to get them all down so I won't forget them. As this is our orientation week, yesterday we had a workshop in the morning on Culture Shock as Americans immersing ourselves in China, and I already feel like this is one of the hardest, but will ultimately be one of the most rewarding places on the Earth for an American to go and plan to stay for a long time. We talked about our expectations of China before we got here, and whether or not they have been true. One thing we all agreed on is that ... read more

First, I know I've been bad so my apologies. Ah, now that that's been said I'll pick up where I left off. Things were sort of slow for a while. I had dinner with one of my uncles, his family and friends. Other than that I pretty much sat around and ran errands with my xiao jiu jiu and xiao jiu ma (the uncle and aunt that I'm living with) Then last week (at least i think it was last week...i've sort of lost track of time) I met up with an old aquaintance. I thought it would be kinda awkward since I hadn't seen her in 5 years and I had committed to a full day of me struggling to speak to her in chinese, but it turned out to be a lot of fun ... read more

Today is our last day in Asia! Tonight we fly to Auckland, New Zealand and begin our Australasian leg. Shanghai has been our last Asian destination. Not a tremendous amount we wanted to see or do here, more of a convenient flight path out (sorry Shanghai!). Shanghai is a real contrast to Beijing. Seems to have modelled itself on Hong Kong zealously, albeit with far fewer international brands to flog. Buildings along one side of the Bund are 1930's art deco, whilst across the river there are skycrapers and uber modern constructions that wouldn't look out of place in Speilberg's AI. Haven't felt a real affinity with this place, though it is a few degrees warmer compared to Beijing which is welcome. Have finally shed the long johns and woolly hat, even painted my toenails this ... read more
