We just wanted to add a few more photos. We continue to enjoy Shanghai roaming the streets. Went to the Urban planning museum. The pictures of before and now were amazing, more so since so much of the construction has occurred since 1985. It was also very impressive to see what their plans include for the next 15 years! In one of our walks we stopped into a very small food vendor on the street. Everything looked great so we began to order by pointing at the various dishes. Oh no, we were to order from the menu in which case she pointed to the large sign on the wall with 8 rows of Chinese charactors...each with a price of 3 to 6 rmb. We can vouch that the first 3 items on the list were ... read more

Greetings from Shanghai. Well this is our first attempt at blogging... let me know how it works. We have spent the last 5 days thoroughly enjoying this beautiful very 21st century city. Mark & Marla and the girls are excellent travel guides. The girls are enjoying their school which lessons include Chinese and the violin! We've enjoyed the fakes market where we did succumb to some great deals (:! We shall see how long they last. The variety of buildings between the old and new, many side by side makes for fascinating walks. Today we are on our way to the antiques market and just more waundering among the streets. But it is hot!! and very humid. After about 4-5 hours we are drenched and tired!! The food has been wonderful with lots of variety, such ... read more

Sunday, September 18, 2005. Weather: Delightful. Temperature: Still in the 80's. What a long day this will be. We arose early to be able to have the buffet breakfast before catching the 7:00 a.m. shuttle bus to the airport. We could have caught the shuttle bus from the airport to the hotel yesterday if we had known where it stopped but $1.50 cab ride isn't bad. We are flying on Japan Air Lines via Tokyo to Kennedy Airport in New York City. Since we are in Business Class from Shanghai there is little or no wait to check in. We then go through the formalities of outbound Immigration and the usual security screening that seems to be about the same as you would find in the states. Then we go to the lounge to await our ... read more

A few years back in the US there was this rumour that went around that one of the fast food joints had served up a chicken nugget that still had a beak and the little rooster mohawk. I'm not sure if it was just urban myth but I've actually seen a photo of it. Terrifying isn't it? That's value meal #4 here. Last night in Xian went to this family style restaurant and as per our normal order process, just pointed to an appealing soup dish. Only when we dipped the ladle in to serve it up did we notice the black rooster claws and severed head. Not to be disrespectful, we ate it.....up. I actually thought it was damn good. I couldn't bring myself to gnaw at the face just yet, but we're working our ... read more

Saturday, September 17, 2005. Weather: Another lovely day. Temperature: Still in the 80's. Our trip is rapidly coming to a close. More rapidly than you might think! This morning, after a lovely breakfast buffet at the Rui Jin, we took another walk in the French Concession and to the bazaar for some last minute items. We then returned to our Suite and packed for the trip home. The flight home is not until tomorrow. However, since the plane leaves at 9 a.m. we have decided to relocate to a hotel right at the airport as it is sometimes as much as an hour drive by taxi and even in China it is necessary to be at the airport several hours before your flight. We lingered until almost check out time at noon then checked out and ... read more

It has been a while since I posted something about our life in Shanghai. I have to say that I am enjoying our stay in this city. There is something interesting every single day (not always nice but always interesting/funny) although I have to say that sometimes I still miss going to the supermarket and recognizing every single product or just knowing that I will not need to squat every time I feel like going to the restroom in a shopping mall. Omar is doing good but working loooong hours. Last week he was invited to participate in a panel with Philip Kotler, hailed as "the world's foremost expert on the strategic practice of marketing" by most Marketing professionals and by anyone that has read maybe the most authoritative textbook on marketing: Marketing Management, now in ... read more

Friday, September 16, 2005 Weather: Bright and sunny. Temperature: Still in the 80's. Today we must move. We attempted to book an extra night at the Shangri-la but they were full. That may have been a blessing at $350.00 U.S. per night! Prior to leaving on the trip I was in contact with a friend found on the Virtual Tourist site who is a resident of Shanghai. Emily was kind enough to recommend an alternative to staying in the big, five star tourist hotels. She recommended a small hotel called the Rui Jin located on the Puxi side of the river in an old area known as the French Concession. We made reservations there through Sinohotels.com well before leaving home. I splurged and booked an Executive Deluxe room at the daily rate of $125. U.S.! Around ... read more

Thursday, September 15, 2005 Weather: Still lovely. Temperatures: In the 80's. Our breakfast was included every day on the trip. On most occasions it was in the breakfast room of the hotel and was a nice western buffet with eastern items available to those who chose to experiment. The only word that I can think of to describe the breakfast at the Shangri-la is "overwhelming." The Yi Café on the second floor of the hotel is the breakfast venue. It is huge. There are stations for just about everything and anything. It is also crowded. This is a convention hotel. There were lines everywhere. It was necessary to wait for a while to be seated and coffee did not come promptly. Without a doubt there were hundreds of people in there and something to satisfy anyone ... read more
