Even thought we just posted a blog we spent an amazing day at Ephesus and decided to post some pics from it. The weather has turned and we see on the TV, Istanbul has snow. Here, we are just very cold, but beautiful clear crisp air made for some nice photos. Ephesus was amazing! Originally an early Greek settlement in 1000 BC thru 6th century AD, with as many as 250,000 people. Lots of wars and a silting harbor contributed to its demise. There continues to be alot of excavation, with every dig they seem to find something! With the cold it was a very quiet day, and when we were touring the terraced houses we were the only ones there. Many times we would just sit and listen. It was very easy to envision it, ... read more

Well, we want to post a quick update as we start our last week. This past week has been amazing! Has it really only been a week since we left beautiful Istanbul?? We arrived in Cappadocia mid-day New Year’s Eve. We booked our hotel Kelebek, another great find off the internet. It included airport pickup. How we love when we walk out of the airport and someone is waiting for us with a little sign with our names on it. No hassles just get in and they take you straight to your hotel. Such Luxury! This area is known for its cave dwellings, unique rock formations, and ancient ruins. A highlight of our time in Goreme was the hot air balloon ride on New Years morning. We thought it was a great way to begin the ... read more

Lovely Istanbul. What a beautiful city! And for a city of 16 million, it is surprisingly easy to get around. People are friendly, the food is excellent and the history is mind boggling! We love this city! We arrived the evening of Christmas day after fortunately uneventful flights. (Especially watching the snowstorms since then.) We stumbled on Hotel Nena on trip advisors with so many positive reviews, we did wonder if they had hotel staff just typing away. But what a fantastic find!! By the end of our 4 days there, we even added to the glowing reviews. On the 7th floor is a breakfast and dining area with this view of the Blue Mosque. The night shot was taken the evening we arrived. It was just magical. The sunrise shot from the same spot. To ... read more

Wow, hard to believe we are halfway thru our time here. We have completed the first assignment and will start the 2nd one tomorrow. We are having a great time! We arrived in Accra, Ghana last Sunday night after 26 hrs of flying time. We were picked up by the ACDI/VOCA driver after an hour and a half waiting to get thru customs. After 10pm by the time we reached our nice hotel, we looked at the paper work they had just given us, only to find out we were scheduled on the next morning flight at 7:15am to Tamale, a one hour flight to the North! So up by 5:30am we are up and running! And it continued that busy for the rest of the week. Our project was working with a 'nucleous' farmer. He ... read more

ok, well looks like I messed up this blog. It must have been the multiple attempts to download the photos, and now it looks like there are about 4 copies of each pic. I did not plan to post 98 pics. Way too slow to delete the extras, at one at a time. I am just going to post it as is. Some countries are really easy to photograph, and Myanmar is one of them. The stupas and pagodas are amazing! All have been gold leaf covered over the years, and at dusk show some amazing colors. The people are friendly, and all in all an easy country to travel in. We spent 2 days touring Yangoon, with the highlight the Shwedagon Pagoda, propbably the most sacred Pagoda in Myanmar. It has the giant main Stupa ... read more

We are back in beautiful Bangkok which feels, oh so luxurious, after India. India, hmmm, India. This was our 4th trip to India, and we still find it to be, by far, the hardest country to travel in. Life does not appear to be improving for the average person. But still a fascinating, and frustrating country! So, a 'quick' recap of the past 2 weeks. Chitwan NP in Nepal was great. We take the 6 hr tourist bus to Chitwan. We thoroughly enjoy our 3 nights, and 2 full days of activities. We stayed inside the park at a quiet rustic place. It felt abit like a camp with all the planned activities, but was fun! The park has accomadations for @ 60 people, but there were only @ 15 people staying there, so we felt ... read more

We're back! What a beautiful trek! Langtang Valley is a beautiful u-shaped glacier carved valley on the Northern Nepal border with Tibet. The 80 mile bus ride actually did take 9 hrs! Mostly due to the road, some due to the fact we were constantly stopping to pick up and drop off. The load included 4 boxes of baby chicks, tons of bags of potatoes & rice and 2 goats tied to the roof! The trek - gorgeous but harder than we had hoped! We gained 8000 ft in elevation in 20 miles over 3 days and lost it all coming back down. And that did not count all the times you were losing elevation along the way. It was up & up and then down and down! But we both feel in pretty good shape ... read more

Happy T-day!! Hope everyone enjoyed their turkey! We enjoyed some delicious dahl, curry and french onion soup!! Definitely a memorable t-day for us! Katmandu - it is amazing! We were last here in 1996, and although it has definitely grown, it hasn't changed that much. the look and feel is still very much as we remember it. With the exception of the internet cafes, and ATMs, which were not around in '96. It still has that ' 60s feel and probably one day will become a UNESCO site! The streets are still amazing, crammed with taxis, motorcycles, bicycle rickshaws, pedistrians all crammed in a one lane pot holed street. Horns blowing, whistles shrieking, the amazing smells of incense, small street stralls crammed with an amazing collection of trinkets, buddhas, hiking gear knock-offs, clothes, etc. interspersed with ... read more

ok, we are in Cuenca sitting in our hotel. Today is National Census day, one they do every 10 years. It is fascinating as everyone in the entire country must stay inside from 7am until 5pm today (even the tourists) and a multi page questionare is answered by everyone, yes even us. The questions include age, employment, education and health. It is amazing as this city of 400,000 people plus is completely quiet except for the occassional pigeons. This am we did hear the police on a microphone telling someone to go back inside...must of been an American! Yes, hard to imagine this ocurring in the US! So, we have 9 hours to catch up on the journal and might as well publish another blog. Tha Amazon was amazing, definitely the densest rain forest we have ... read more
