Really. I've eaten delicious Peking duck, excessive amounts of beef and pork, plenty of seafood, and every once a while even chicken. But I've hardly caught the faintest whiff of turkey since landing here. If it wasn't for the Desautels, an American family I've been staying with for the past 5 days, I might have had to forgo turkey even on beloved Turkey Day. But you can all exhale. Chris was well fed this last Thursday, having been served a meal complete with gravy, imported cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, turkey and one delicious apple pie. We even said a nice meal prayer. I guess the Chinese don’t know what they are missing. … When I last posted I was staying with Vince and Kitty, and they definitely deserve more than a word here, as they supported ... read more

We got the high speed train from Beijing on Wednesday which took a little less than 5 hours and was pure comfort. Each carriage shows the speed the train is going and we hit a top speed of 311km/hour. The high speed train was introduced in July and there have been some minor teething problems to say the least. Two trains collided a couple of months back resulting in a number of fatalities and some of the trains were recalled due to technical faults. Nevertheless we took our chances rather than taking the alternative 14 hour train. Shanghai is quite different to Beijing. It was the first we saw of people begging. Women carrying babies on the train bow in front of you. It's fairly sad. The city is almost like two cities. You can see ... read more

Teacher C Sorry about the delay folks-- it has not been of lethargy or a lack material; rather a profusion of material and a lack of time. "You are who you pretend to be."  --Kurt Vonnegut "Fail, fail again, fail better."  --Samuel Beckett Somehow I ended up Here. Here: I am writing this on a  wonderfully efficiently subway, riding clear across Shanghai to the closest thing I have to home for several thousands miles in any direction: Vincent and Kitty's roomy apartment in the Pudong district.  My throat is sore. My hands are caked in chalk. My mind is chiefly concerned with lesson plans for several hundred different students.... That's right-- hundreds. Indeed, how is it that I can peer down at a buttoned shirt and jeans and say that it is now a teacher, albeit ... read more

Arrived early evening in Shanghai safe and sound after our 5 hr bullet train from Beijing. The first port of call was the shanghai bund which is the place to go for the best of the shanghai skyline. Views were amazing and we even managed to find somewhere cheap in a prime location to sit and enjoy a beer. Today we booked our train tickets to Xian and travelled around with our Chinese speaking room mate. Having been to China several times before had good knowledge of places to eat. The china lonely planet guide recommended a place to go for dumplings which did not disappoint!! Other than just eating all day we visited the Shanghai museum in the morning. Was very interesting but lets just say that it is probably the last museum me and ... read more

Back in Action again... I promised my mother and grandmother that I would be better about keeping up with my blog this semester. I have been neglecting it for the past couple of weeks purely because I was too busy to even think about it. Finely though, we are getting back into the swing of school and so I now have a little time to think and reflect on being in China for another year. I must say that packing for the second time around was not as easy as I had hoped it would be. I still did not sleep the night before I left but it all turned out to be fine. I had a fine trip over though I would not venture to say it was comftorable, and as soon as I touched ... read more

So we have been here for just over a month and I have had a lot of observations of China, of the language, of the living style. Now I have one observation of the people. The local people around us are very hardworking. Everyone works, most work more than one job. Take for example our driver. He works 6 days a week and is available at our wim. Takes Bryan to work 30 minutes away at 7 am and some days stays to have to drive us to and from dinner. He jumps out of the car to help with the baby, put the stroller in the back, unload the grocery cart, whatever. And has to deal with our one word sentences as we learn the language! One of the more interesting jobs (to me) is ... read more

After a long night of last minute packing, I was somewhat dreading the almost 15 hour flight ahead of me. I really love to travel but I hate the lengths it takes to get there. I stayed up till 1:00 am on Sunday packing, don't know why I do this every time and always end up regretting it. I woke up three hours later to get ready and head out to the San Antonio International Airport for my 7:00 am flight. The airport at 5:30 am was completely packed and chaotic and it didn't help my stress level. After waiting in a really long line to check my luggage, the Delta attendant had to check to make sure my documents were correct and I was allowed to leave the country. He actually told me that my ... read more

So we have officially been here an entire week. And I feel compelled to communicate a list of the craziest things I have seen so far. Now, keep in mind that we live in an apartment complex in the Pudong area. I can walk to the park, the gym, the store, Kaelen's school, Starbucks, etc. It's busy but not downtown kinda busy. I have to assume that the laws here are quite different from home because everytime I turn around, BAM something that makes my jaw drop or makes me giggle. I am certain this list will grow as we continue our stay in this beautiful area, but I can't keep these to myself any longer... 1- Everyone rides scooters (Vespa-kinda things). No helmets, no worries about cars or pedestrians. As I am standing on the ... read more

Wow... it's finally sinking in. We live in China now! Such a surreal concept! We arrived on June 15th. Everyone did great on the 13.5 hour flight. Kaelen took exceptionally well to business class by immediately reclining her seat, getting her movie screen out and ordering an orange juice! Such a diva, even in China! LB stole the hearts of all of the flight attendants so he got away with everything... I think they even let him fly the airplane! He was (surprisingly) very well behaved and slept or watched Toy Story most of the flight. It was pretty rough getting everyone to sleep on Shanghai time, but I think we may be getting the hang of it finally! The apartment is nice but something to get used to. Feels oddly like college living again but ... read more

Monday the 2nd was a good vacation day. I slept in that morning and spent a couple hours studying mandarin. I discovered awhile ago that it can be pretty hard to motivate yourself to study recreationally. My afternoon was completely open to whatever I wanted to do and I filled it. I went to the Shanghai Urban Planning Museum after lunch and learned a lot about the development of the city. Shanghai has a very interesting international history and I am enjoying my time here more and more. There is a city model on the 3rd floor which is possibly one of the largest scale models in the world. A high percentage of the city is modeled with balconies and overhangs around for spectators to see from all angles. The Shanghai Tower was in the model ... read more
