As noted previously, we all seem to have made it safely to the other side of the 21st of December. Congratulations to all but the Mayans... it does suck to be wrong, so I offer instead my condolences to them. C'est la vie. We at Disney English on-boarding had yet another weekend off. So, the 5+ ventured out yet again on a spine tingling adventure through the streets of Shanghai. This particular adventure started on the other side of the Huangpu River at the base of the Pearl Tower. We had full intention of going out and getting mindlessly lost again, but instead opted for the good ol' fashioned tour bus. Yeeeehoooo!! For a measley 30RMB (yeah... $5) we got a 24hr hop-on-hop-off pass. Eat that, DC with your $26 a person!!! Naturally, I'm uploading the ... read more

Wow. It feels impossible to believe that I have only been here for 2 days. These 48 hours have been such a whirlwind that there are moments when those of us spending time together will talk about things that have happened, pause and say, “wait… that was today, wasn’t it??” because it will feel as though it was a week ago. Not entirely unexpectedly, I’ve made a group of fast friends. In this type of situation, it’s actually harder NOT to have people to spend time with and bond with because honestly what else are you going to do?? Today, a small collection of us decided to go all out with the touristy-ness and grab our cameras for a day out on the town. As luck would have it, it was misty and rainy and foggy ... read more

New photos on: http://s251.photobucket.com/albums/gg311/draftwrite/ …..the Gaotie, the high speed train being rolled out across eastern China at a phenomenal rate, is already revolutionising our travel to Shanghai. From here it's approximately the same distance as from London to Edinburgh, (which, I just looked it up, takes about 5 hours by train). With speeds up to 300kph, from Zhenjiang, just across the river it only takes about 1 hour 20 minutes. If enough people are going it's reasonable to take a taxi from the school to Zhenjiang, (about 45 minutes), at a cost of about ¥140 or $6 per head for 4 passengers, then about ¥120 per head for the Gaotie, (under $20), & you're there. Aircraft style seats, plenty of legroom, smooth enough to write during the trip. On this beautiful, sunny autumn weekend it ... read more

Shanghai After 7 months working and living in Melbourne we are finally on the last leg of our journey home. We really enjoyed working in Melbourne and both managed to get great jobs to do with our careers which will help when we return to England at Christmas. So we said goodbye to our work colleagues, house mate and friends and made our way to Melbourne Airport. We just booked cheap flights to Shanghai with Eastern China Airlines, cost approx $450AUD each which is around £300. We were pleasantly surprised to find the first 8 hours of our journey was in fact with Quantas, as Eastern Airlines were selling seats on their behalf. We would be stopping over in Singapore for a couple of hours before heading onto Shanghai which would then be another 5 hours. ... read more

This past week (October 1-5) was China's National Holiday. Every Chinese citizen is off from work for this week and travels all over the country, especially to Beijing. My friends, Ben and Erin, and I decided to leave Beijing before it got too croweded and take the opportunity to visit two new cities: Hong Kong and Shanghai! Hong Kong Our flight to Hong Kong got in late last Friday night and we arrived at our hotel on Hong Kong Island around midnight. We were staying at the Cosmopolitan, which happened to be right next to a terraced cemetery but it was still nice (haha)! The next day we got up early and had breakfast in the “Times Square” of Hong Kong. It does look a little like a miniature New York there. We decided to test ... read more

We've arrived in Shanghai, descending into a fog of pollution that hasn't lifted the entire time we've been here. Flying in across the city, we were intrigued at the way the city was designed, seeing more open land around most homes, than homes themselves. The airport was a sight as well, not to mention that it is gargantuan. One wing of this place seems to be larger than the entire Regina airport. There is beautifully crafted merchandise in most stores; tempting to say the least. Luckily, a lack of proper currency has dissuaded my desire for something, anything, made of jade. Kris is having a rough time at the moment, having just endured the twelve hour flight. As I stand here at a computer terminal, she is laying across three chairs, sleeping soundly on my backpack. ... read more

It really wouldn't be normal if I was able to get where I needed to go without it being a bigger ordeal that it seems like it should be. Such was was the case getting to China. With a flight delayed by 4 hours, the customs people giving me an extremely hard time because I didn't have a copy of my flight information leaving out of china (I actually hadn't booked it at that point), and then sleeping in the Shanghai airport to wait for the metro to open at 6 am left me exhausted by the time I got to my hostel. I crawled right into bed when I got there at 8am and crashed until noon. When I woke up and finally wasn't in a daze any longer, I began to appreciate the fact ... read more

I am not in the mood for Shanghai. I don't want to do another big, hot, commercial city but its the easiest way to get to the school – and then I realise that the big futuristic spaceshippy skyline i've always loved and wanted to see is actually Shanghai – so that settles it – my geography continues to be appalling. Its why i'm having to visit everywhere in the world in person – just to find out where it is... I arrive in at 10pm at night and the cab driver doesn't seem to understand English addresses. I am blatantly overcharged again – around 100 yuan for what should be a 30 yuan journey – but he's on the meter and at the official cab rank so what can I do. I'm sensing he's found ... read more

This is my first blog. I hope you like it. So here goes. Mom and I planned to get out and do things today. It’s been a day since I came back from UK and well high time we get out specially when in Shanghai! My parents moved here six months ago because of my dad's transfer and I’m here because I have holidays in college. Dad's transfer initially a shock is really quite an opportunity for me because I get to travel a lot and see a side of the world that hardly anyone around me has seen or heard of. I'm an architecture student, and recently that seems to be the one thing that defines me. Let’s just say there are many things that define me, but lately studying architecture seems to be the ... read more
