Aoife and Vinny

So we have quit our jobs, packed our bags and are heading off on our travels! First stop China, then Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, New Zealand and finally Australia! In the words of Mark Twain "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."

We arrived in Kuala Lumpur after a 4 hour bus ride from Penang in the middle of the afternoon and it was hectic! We were dropped off in the middle of the city and hadn't a clue where we were. As it turns out, we were walking distance from our hostel, which was great! Our hostel was fairly bleak to be honest, just a cell with a bunk bed about 3 flights of stairs up but it would do! That night, we headed into the centre of town to Jalan Bukit Bintang, one of the big shopping streets! The city is busy, colourful, noisy and hot and just how you would expect it to be. On one hand, it’s extremely modern and futuristic, with a monorail going around above your head as you walk along streets ... read more

Aoife and I arrived in Penang island, connected to mainland Malaysia by bridge, on the evening of January 12th by ferry from Langkawi. Upon arrival, the taxi drivers swarmed the area putting pressure on people arriving. We planned to get a free shuttle bus as it was our understanding that the guesthouse was less than ten minutes away. The taxi drivers told us that the shuttle was not running at this time of year which turned out to be untrue. Then another taxi driver hounded us asking where we were going. He was adamant that our guesthouse was 20 minutes away and we agreed a fixed price. Turned out it was just over 5 minutes around the corner. I questioned his earlier lie and he just got angry with us. "Keep your f##king money" he said ... read more

Ah, Langkawi! A great start to the Malaysian leg of our trip (although most of ye know how that ended)! After a full day boat trip from Thailand, stopping in Koh Lipe for some amazing snorkelling, we finally arrived in Kuah town. Most people when they come to Langkawi head straight to the beach, but we were interested in seeing what the town was like before heading out to the coast. For anyone unfamiliar with Langkawi, its an island off the north west coast of Malaysia, also known as the jewel of Kedah and it about 25km in length and width. First thing we did when we arrived was find somewhere to eat that was showing the Man Utd Man City game! We were in luck, as right across the road was a big open air ... read more

On January 4th Aoife and I arrived in the island of Koh Lanta. We stayed in a hotel called the Ailf Apartments for around $20 per night. The hotel is about a 10 minute walk from the beach up a back road in the middle of nowhere. However, they provided us with a motorbike during our stay for free and we were allowed to use the beachside pool in their sister hotel, the Garden Hotel. This was where we spent most of our time in Koh Lanta! Koh Lanta is by far the least developed Thai island that we've been on and there was a very relaxed vibe about the place. It was exactly what we looking for from Thailand. The hotel worked out well with the free motorbike and the use of the swimming pool ... read more

Be warned, this is a bit of a moany blog! Myself and Vinny left Phi Phi on the evening ferry to Krabi, where we got a taxi to Ao Nang, a beachside resort town nearby. The main reason we were here was to visit the beaches of Railay so the next morning, we got a longtail boat to Railay Beach West, the closest of them. We were surprised by how expensive it was, over $12 for the two of us, as the beach was only minutes away (and there was a load of us on the boat). The scenery on the boat was great though and the water was so clear, I couldn’t wait to go snorkelling! When we got to the beach, it was fairly busy. We found a spot and spent the day there, ... read more

We are about 6/7 weeks behind on our blog and have now left Asia. We arrived in Auckland, New Zealand today from Singapore (with an 8 hour layover at night in Brisbane) and we plan to travel around till March 15th when we fly to Sydney. The end of our Asian adventure was a miserable one! We both got Dengue fever, an illness passed by mosquito. It was an awful experience and we're now glad to be out of Asia. The way we're still feeling, weak and tired, we probably would have taken a flight home rather than to New Zealand if we had the choice back in Singapore. I'm sure after a good week of recuperation and seeing what New Zealand has to offer we'll be rejuvenated and more upbeat about travelling. My symptoms first ... read more

Day 1: Our first day, we met our dive instructor at 8am to go through the theory part of the course. It was like being back at school for the first half of the day, watching educational dvds. I must admit I was dosing a few times but my "dive buddy", Aoife, woke me. Your dive partner is referred to as your "dive buddy", buddy for short. After lunch we got to the more interesting practical training. Our dive instructor, Lorraine, first showed us how all the scuba equipment worked, how to put it all together and how to prepare properly for your dive. When we got all the gear on, we had to walk about five minutes to a sectioned off part of the beach. The gear is about 12KG and the weight belt is ... read more

When myself and Vinny were leaving Chiang Mai to head to the airport, our guesthouse called us a tuc tuc. What arrived can only be described as a Celine Dion fanclub on wheels! The tuc tuc was decked out with a massive flat screen TV that came down in front of us, with a Celine Dion concert on and the music blaring from speakers on either side! It was hilarious, being driven through the city streets with Celine Dion classics blaring from the tuctuc causing many people to stop and just stare!! Vinny took a really funny video of it! We got to the airport and had to wait hours as our flight was delayed. Upon arrival in Phuket airport in the middle of the night, we were surrounded by taxi drivers who were quite aggressive. ... read more

From the hectic pace of Bangkok, Aoife and I headed for the more laid back city of Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand. The main reason for going to Chiang Mai was to go trekking in the jungle. We booked a 3 day 2 night trek with a travel agent that included the bus and our first nights accommodation in Chiang Mai. The trip didn't start well. Someone with the bus company stole a few things from my rucksack including a watch, sunglasses, earphones and my new Robbie Fowler t-shirt. Thankfully I had mailed home to Ireland the Muangthong United jersey that Fowler had signed for me! We arrived in Chiang Mai around 6am on December 17th. After we checked into our hotel and had some breakfast we tried to get some sleep. Not as easy as ... read more

Bangkok. The word conjures up images of ladyboys, 'massage therapists' and hangovers! And we were interested to see if it would live up to expectations!! First things first though, we had to get there from Siem Reap, Cambodia. We decided to get a private car to take us to the border (I know, very flashpacky! but we had been advised that the bus could take six hours). When we booked it, we were told "new car, very nice" but this is Cambodia so when a beat up old 1994 Toyota Camry pulled up, we were not that surprised! As long as it had seatbelts, which it did, we were ok! After a fairly hairy two hour ride to the border, we queued up to get across the border. Once we had officially left Cambodia, we had ... read more
