We have been soo busy the past few days in getting ready for school. My classroom is almost finished. I have a co-Chinese teacher named Ms. Wei who I love, and we have 25 students in our homeroom. Since we are an international school the students who come to our school are kids do not have a Chinese passport. They might be from China or their parents could be but they do not have a Chinese passport. Many are Korean or Japanese I have heard. I teach 11 of them non native English and 23 Science and Social Studies. I am so excited for the first couple of days and yet soo nervous too. I am still trying to figure out the school and how it runs, so it is hard to even imagine telling children ... read more

I have been super busy with my school orientation and so on for the past few days, but it has been soo helpful. I am feeling much more prepared. Tomorrow we get to go back to the Puxi Campus of our school so I will get to see Pamela! I think the 4 of us who are staying on this satellite campus have started to see the down fall of living out here. We are not really in the hub area of the city but more in the high technology part. We have lots of computer companies around us and such so there isnt really that much within walking distance. There is a subway station which is nice but it is still about a 15 minute walk to it. There are also cabs we can take ... read more

The trip over to China was not to bad. The 14 hours went pretty fast I think with the help of a personal movie player, 3 Tylenol pm and a pillow. I slept for about 5 ½ hours and got up just in time to go over my information and to get ready to land. I met the cutest family in the customs line. They were from South Carolina and had spent the past 5 years in China. They had 3 of the cutest children. Two of which were actually born in China. They still had southern accents though. They were coming back from their summer vacation in Pawleys Island, South Carolina. The husband had been working for a Charlotte company that has a lot of dealings with Shanghai. I could not imagine having that little ... read more

Back to where my trip started! It was kind of a sad last day in China. Jie and his family still aren't here so I went sightseeing by myself. It started thunderstorming as soon as I got into downtown and it rained for the rest of the day. I still decided to stick it out and see some of the things on my list. I went to Nanjing Road, one of the most famous streets in China. It's a huge street for shopping and has everything you would ever need, and then some. As I was walking it started pouring down rain so I got in a taxi and drove to the Oriental Pearl Tower, and enormous purple/pinkish bulbousy tower, right next to the Bund, another famous street along the Huangpu River. I walked around under ... read more

When we moved to China 2 years ago, people just couldn't understand why we were doing it. I think during this summer while meeting friends and family they have started to understand why we love it so much. And yes, it's official, I love living in China! So many of you will be feeling shocked at that statement, and believe me, it's far from perfect living here, but today has really highlighted to Ian and I why we are here. After a rather long 2 flights from Manchester, we were met at Shanghai airport by 2 people from our new school who brought us to our hotel. We are staying here 2 nights as we can't have our removals come until tomorrow morning. To be honest, it has been lovely to chill out a bit today ... read more

It is 11:22pm and I am currently at the Shanghai airport hotel in one piece with all of my luggage. The big question everyone asks is, "was it a smooth journey?" I wouldn't say it was a smooth journey, but it was definitely an interesting one because it was a little different. After today, I am a strong believer in fate. I think there is always a reason for everything, but you'll see what I'm talking about later. The flight from SF to Beijing went by a lot faster than I thought. Come to think of it, the final exam that I took for Pharmacokinetics on Friday was 5 hours long, today's flight was 11 hours long, and 5 x 2 = 10. If you do the math, the time it took to finish my exam ... read more

July 21, 2010 So we have about 7 more hours left on the plane trip. It hasn’t been bad at all. In the line for check in I met a guy who goes to NC State and he was dropping off his cousin and aunt at the airport, and they happened to be on my flight. So I’ve been helping them get to the gates and things since they don’t speak much English. Then on the flight to Detroit I met another nice Chinese guy from Hangzhou, one of the cities I’m going to in China, and it turns out we sit really close together on the flight to Shanghai too. And I was really lucky because there are three columns of seats on this flight with 3 seats in each row. I’m on the side ... read more
