We have done a few flights but we still had time to explore more of Entebbe. I went sailing with Alec on Vic Lake and we saw a Spotted Neck Otter passing by us in the water. On the doc locals brought their goats to take them to an island where they farm. Another day Jaco and I went exploring and we found a kind of a harbor. Later we went to Aero Beach where we descovered one of the Boeing 707's that was used in the Raid on Entebbe - to rescue the Air France passengers that was hijacked by terrorists in 1976 and was given permission to land at Entebbe by Idi Amin. From the road leading to Aero Beach I managed to get a photo of the UN aircrafts and ours too...indicated by ... read more
Hi Barbara, Hendrien and I took part in the 5km 2011 Walk the Talk in Johannesburg. Our dogs also joined the fun. We walked for an organization called Pink Chicks for Breast Cancer, that is why we are wearing pink. There was 50 000 people that participated in the walk, so it was 'n bit crowed! Went to visit my parents in the Eastern Cape, Stilbaai. The road trip was though but we made it, 16h of driving! There was 'n lot of road works on the road that wasted some time. At least we could get out and stretch our legs while waiting for our turn to drive through the road works. Noodle was beside her self of excitement of the new smells, different dogs and things to chase. Every day we walked her twice (no leash)! After the morning walk she was so tired se had a nap and was ready for the afternoon walk. She wasn't keen for the ocean or the river but the day I ran into a pond/pool that formed on the beach she followed me in to my surprise. Cheers Werna and Noodle... ... read more
Two of my last layovers were Barcelona, where the famous architect Antoni Gudi lived and worked. Most of his work dates back from the late 1800’s – 1900’s. His work was mostly inspired by nature and his work is an excellent example of Art Nouveau. - Park Guell This park is an UNESCO World Heritage Site and was created by Antoni Gaudi between 1900 and 1914. It is skillfully designed and composed to bring peace and calm. - Lamp posts This was one of his first works for the city of Barcelona in 1878–1879. - Casa Mila (La Pedrera) This apartment building was built during 1906 – 1910 and is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. The building does not use load-bearing walls, but rest on pillars and arches. Together with the use of steel this allowed ... read more
I had a few days to spare and decided to go to Istanbul. It was a welcome change to fly with Turkish Airlines. The flight took off at 2:15am and arrived at Ataturk International Airport, Istanbul at 6:15am. When I got to the Metro station at the airport I realised I needed change to pay for the ticket as I only had Turkish Lire notes. While I was wondering where to find some change, I saw one of the Turkish Airline Crew that operated the DOH-IST flight. I asked him for advice and he just said ‘Follow me’. He swiped his token and the gate to the Metro opened. He was surprised that I recognised him because he did not see me during the flight. While on the train he explained to me how to get ... read more
‘Anything is possible in India’…. and ‘what you need to drive safely in crazy India is…. good breaks, a tooter and good luck’… which was the wisdom of our driver, Mr Kamal. Needless to say…. it became our slogan for our trip.... Floris arrived with Qatar Airways in Doha early in the morning and after a great day (museum of Islamic art and lunch at the souq) he and I took a nap and soon it was time to take the taxi to the Doha International Airport. At the airport we were pleasantly surprised that we got a seat on the almost full DOH - DEL flight. I am pleased to say that we had a great crew serving us during the flight. We arrived at 3am in Delhi and at immigration the immigration officer started ... read more
