Allow me to apologise that three weeks have passed since my arrival in Taizhou, in which time I have been so busy adjusting to life here, settling in and working that I have found no time to write. I shall endeavour, henceforth, to keep you more regularly informed of my adventures and, indeed, may need to write two or three blogs in quick succession just to get you up to date - there is far too much to write in one sitting! :) I suppose the best place to start is at the beginning, with my arrival in China, though beyond this I cannot promise that this account will flow in a strictly chronological order - instead it will cover different aspects of my observations and adventures as they seem to hang together best. I left ... read more

We enjoyed out first trip to the Shanghai Ocean Aquarium so much that my daughter requested to go back for her birthday. This is a beautiful aquarium with many interesting species, large viewing tanks, and quite a few large tunnels. I will let the movies and pictures tell the rest!... read more

After doing a 16 hour train journey yesterday, i had a shorter train ride today. A 7 minute trip on the Maglev from Shanghai to the airport. It reached 280mph, considerably faster than the Eurostar. I remember reading about experimental Magnetically levitated trains years ago. This is the only commercial maglev train in the world and also happens to be the Worlds fastest train. Took a trip up shanghai's tallest building, at 485 metres, also one of the world's tallest. Shanghai is certainly a city with big ambitions. I've also noticed something strange about the fast food outlets in China that is beginning to bother me, out of the eight I've been in, six have had Just one song playing on repeat on the sound system. By the time you've finished your meal, you've heard the ... read more

So I have been missing the south a lot recently and so here are somethings that both make me miss the south and make China feel a little more like home. There is a bar called Southern Belle- which claims to have Southern food. I found boiled peanuts while eating street food- not as good as the ones at LKW though and teaching my kids beach music for music class!! Love everyone! VC... read more

Becca and I went down to Yuyuan Garden to get Halloween decorations for our classrooms and in one of the stalls I saw this tiny picture of General Patton. I grabbed it and tried to ask them why they had it... thankfully Becca was there to speak Chinese and we found out that they use to sell military models or something like that. I just thought it was really wild to be walking by paper pumpkins and then having my eyes fall on General Patton's face. Really random to say the least. They ended up giving me the picture and one of Monty too. It was very funny to see this little Chinese man miming being a general and firing a gun while trying to explain to be who the pictures were and why they had ... read more

EXPO 2010 Shanghai China Philippine Pavilion The surface of the pavilion is made of transparent materials in the shape of diamonds, which swing with the wind and show different visual effects. Outer walls of the pavilion are all decorated with eye-catching collages. Visits can enjoy unique local conditions, customs and art performances inside the pavilion. Australia Pavilion Featuring sculptured curving walls and a red ochre exterior, the Australia Pavilion's appearance is inspired by the world-famous Ayer's Rock. The color of the pavilion's red facade is made from the use of a special kind of steel, which is commonly used in Australia cities. It will change colors responding to the temperature and humidity of Shanghai. It has been 6 weeks since we all started at Dulwich College and the time has just completely and utterly flown away. I can't believe it has been almost 2 months since we moved into our lovely new apartment in Jinqiao and our new life on 'the dark side' (if you are from Hongqiao) and 'the light side'. (if you are from Pudong!) I know I have been rubbish about posting and there is so much that has happened, but I will try to tell as much as possible in photo form as I know that is the most important. Sophie and William have really settled into their new classes and look extremely smart in their new uniforms. We have about 5 different uniforms in any one week, with 2 PE kits (plus summer and winter), ... read more

Tonight at BSF I had a wonderful experience that I thought I would share. One of the questions read "Why do you think being carried off to another land would be a good thing for the people" I took this question at face value since we are studying Isaiah and Israel was under treat of invasion and exile. I said something like... it reminded them of how good they had it under the Lord and how much better the world is under him than under anything else... Yet another lady in my group, an expat to be exact, took the question in a different and more thoughtful and perosnal light. She read it as "Why do you think being carried off to another land would be a good think for A person" Being an COMPLETE foreigner ... read more
