General info: Currency: Chinese Yuan Cost of living: 1,5l bottle of water 5Y, metro ticket 2Y, meal in restaurant 25Y That was my first visit to the most populous country in the world. China widely know from labels of variety of products "made in China" is world's cheapest source of manpower. It is as well a country where human rights or sustainability are not taken into account much. My research how to spend given 24hours in Guangzhou, ended up with an idea to visit one of the tallest towers in the world- Canton Tower, but my team showed up as group of foodies, so I decided get to know the city from culinary side. Local menus are rich in quite specific delicacy for middle-european taste, but i got my experianced colleagues with me and i found ... read more

Hong Kong. One of the most densely populated cities on earth. A city with a clearly noticable colonial history, mixture of cultures and a very impressive skyline. Arriving in Hong Kong was a nice change from the western, New Zealand. Especially because I could see Salman again, whom I had not seen for 9 months. I stayed in his dorm with 3 other dudes so that was nice and cozy. The humidity in Hong Kong was what I noticed first. It's at a whopping 93% almost all of the time! The sun was shining and the weather was sweet so my day began very good. Sal and I had some very good lunch and it was great to catch up. He had school so I headed out to the peak for the day. The peak is ... read more

I have been in China at the Canton Fair the last few weeks. I came here to look for products to sell on Amazon. I started selling on Amazon recently and I would like to get 4 more products up for sale on Amazon by September 2016. I want to develop a few passive income streams over the next few years and I am starting with this. The idea is to become even more location independent than I already am and reduce the risk of being dependent on any single stream of income or any one software patent client. My goal is also to have fun and diversify my day. This is so different than patent law and has presented some interesting challenges so I can explore my business creativity side. I have been able to ... read more

Last week I went to a new restaurant with my friends. As I gazed at the menu, scanning for something good, I quickly realized there were very few things I would be able to eat. I called the waiter, who then called the chef. I pointed to what I thought would be a fairly safe choice and asked, “Does this dish have onions or garlic?” The chef, either American or Canadian (I couldn’t tell), told me there was only a little bit. “Oh, then I can’t have it. I have an allergy.” “Yeah, people have all kinds of preferences, you know, with the gluten and this and that.” he laughed, “Let me guess, you get a bit gassy? An allergy? Sure, we’ll go with that.” Pause. I have an allium allergy/intolerance. I say allergy and intolerance ... read more

Arrived at Saigon airport far too early for checkin. The traffic out of the city was terrible at 8.15 am. We had an hour to wait, watching others queueing up with the biggest boxes imaginable. What on earth is in them? They all looked to have about 5 pieces of luggage each. Although they said check in opened 2 hours before the flight, we spotted a side queue forming next to the Cathay Pacific people, scooched over and joined it, so were very near the front. Given boarding cards for both flights, bye bye luggage until Heathrow! On the plane we were unusual in that we were literally the only 2 westerners and as women, also in the approx 10% of females. Git a full meal, and the request for vegetarian had penetrated their inner workings ... read more

My shower had no hot water. No. Hot. Water. I had a repair person come and he informed me the shower tap was broken. He kindly wrote down what kind of tap I needed to buy, told me to call him when I had purchased it, and left. But that night the shower worked as usual. I bought a new tap but decided to wait it out. Maybe the tap wasn’t broken. Maybe it just had a glitch. Do taps have glitches? Apparently, they do. For quite a while the shower carried on working normally and I had nearly forgotten the still-in-the-box tap sitting in my hallway. That is, until it stopped working again just a few days before the biggest holiday of the year: Spring Festival, a.k.a. Chinese New Year. My Chinese is okay but ... read more

New Year’s Resolution I usually don’t make resolutions. My last real resolution I made was in 2008. On January 1, 2008 I vowed to myself to quit my job, move to another country, and have some adventures. That year in August I moved to China. It was such a big and successful resolution that I figured I could never top it and stopped making them at the New Year. But this year I’ll make a small one: My new year’s resolution is to take up this blog again. I half-heartedly took it up when I returned to China in 2012. But it quickly fell to the wayside. It was another woman’s blog that brought me to China and helped me discover a life that makes me very happy. And I thought, “What if my blog helps ... read more

Denn da will man ja etwas ... read more
