Hello from Guangzhou! Stace and I LOVE reading your comments! It’s a lot of fun, and a great way to end the day! :) We’re sorry we can’t answer them individually, but keep sending them our way! It’s like camp mail call all over again for us! This is our second to last stop on the Adoption from China Tour. We took an early flight this morning and had to miss our hotel breakfast buffet, so there was the potential for crankiness (and not just on Sarah’s part). But thankfully, Sarah did really well on the flight (her first airplane ride!) after munching on leftovers and rice cereal. Mom and dad just survived on adrenaline until we got to McDonald’s in Guangzhou and to our new room for a 3 hour nap! The air is thick ... read more

For those of you that don’t know, I have just arrived in the Peoples Republic of China where I will be teaching English at Shantou University in Guangdong province. I’ll be here for at least a year. The cross-country flight was a piece of cake but the Cathay Pacific flight from LA to Hong Kong was steerage. Do not fly unless you can upgrade or can drink heavily before boarding. I did the later and slept quite peacefully through most of the 14 hours and 45 minutes. The fellow sitting next to me was a substantial American guy who had to remain motionless in the confines of his seat area the entire time. Luckily, he was a champion sleeper. If I had been that physically constricted for that long, I'm afraid I would have gone berserk. ... read more

From Xiamen, I took a 26-hour train ride to Guanzhou, the capital city of the Guandong Province and one of the five centers of the Pearl Delta (others being Hong Kong, Macau, Shenzhen, and Zhuhai). This is the ancestral province of the people from Hong Kong and the home of Cantonese. While I do not consider myself Cantonese (far from it), my great-grandmother is from this province. I shared a sleeper compartment with a family with two girls. How they managed to have two kids in the one-child policy is beyond my understanding. I thought only rich people could afford to pay the penalty associated with having extra children, and here they were sharing the cheap hard-bed compartment with me. I suppose I had a lot of time to ponder this question, given the girls were ... read more

My last day in Shenzhen was spent lychee picking and lychee peeling and lychee eating ! Look at all the lychees! Lychees! Lychees Everywhere! Me = in tree, = munching lychees! Beats watermelon picking, that's for sure. The pictures of this joyful moment were captured on a friend's camera, and the pictures will go up when he sends them to me. (Me, to stop munching merely to take a picture? heh!) I'm off to Xiangtan! **edit** The pictures have arrived, courtesy of Cheng Pei and his dad! Thanks!!! *******... read more

Profound thought acquired: I think that If one remains in a fixed location for a long time, one runs the risk of finding anything and everything different from one's immediate surroundings SURREAL For example, watching people ice-skate on an olympic sized rink on the fourth storey of a shopping mall? Or doing this while enjoying an excellent meal from a restaurant that doesn't take cash? All for the equivalent of a pound? I felt quite liberated to be contemplating how, just as the mind loses strength if not exercised, it also loses flexibility if not 'stretched'. Confucious said that Study without Contemplation leads to confusion, and Contemplation without Study is dangerous. * I say that the mind is a muscle. hmm, more Contemplation needed, perhaps? Meanwhile, enjoy s... read more

Well, Here I am in Shenzhen, after a beautiful flight across Russia (yay JON!) I love how the clouds look from above, it's so pure and full of promise. Shenzhen is a huge metropolis, littered with futuristic skyscrapers -watching all that japanese anime, I sometimes forget that there are cities such as Shenzhen which are actually pretty close to what's depicted on screen. And the lychees here are the size of golf balls! First mountain: Lian Hua Shan Not much of a peak, hence a perfect warm-up. It's right in the centre of the city, how come the UK doesn't get any mountains as city parks?! Beautiful, just what i've been dreaming of, steps cut out of rock, and and lush foliage everywhere. The view was an incredible cityscape, therefore a different kind of inspiring. Check ... read more

We took a 1 hr car ride from HK to Shenzhen and stayed in TLC hostel’s clubhouse! It’s luxurious, just like a suite! We spent the first evening dining with Hui’s family at 大三元 and had an early night. The next was spent sweltering hot at Window to the World and Chinese Cultural Village, in which we watched (in my opinion) a very cruel Mongolian show involving horses. I felt particularly sorry looking at some thin old horses being forced to run faster and faster by the rider; I think I shouldn’t go to animal circuses. And finally we had a fruitful and cooling shopping spree at Lady’s World, where we managed to buy more than we could carry in a matter of two hours. Dinner was takeaway 酸辣粉, and delicious Octopus and Mutton skewers we ... read more

My eyes were sore, I couldnt move my back, but I was determined to finish the book 'Bringing down the house' written by one of the MIT students who killed Vegas by card counting. It hasnt been long since the cold darkness of the atmosphere above the North Pole was broken up by the first rays of lights 35000 feet above the ground. Flying over the pole made my body clock stop, but my relief was great when I got to the last pages of the novel I started reading 11 hours earlier. Five more hours and we would be in Hong Kong. The touch-down was a little 'sketchy' due to the thick layer of low-lying clouds and associated turbulances, but the modern and trendy airport made up for everything. It was 6:15pm local time. ... read more
