I finally made it to China yesterday evening. I met up with Tits yesterday at noon adn then he showed me around Macau, which is great. We then went for a wonderful dinner at a nice Portugese restaurant... fanciest place I've been in so long, felt kinda out of place. Too many forks, knives and spoons, cloth napkin, Perrier! LOL We then went to sock up on some good wine & port there because there are no taxes and it's much cheaper... 7 bottles later. After that we headed to the border crossing where I got my 90 day visa (just to be on the safe side) and then q'd in the long lines to enter China. I had forgotten how people here are. It's great... well entertaining to say the least. As we waited in ... read more

We are completing our third month here and have realized how integrated we have become into the program and the students here. No mistaking our foreignness for sure, but students have seen the opportunity we present and have vigorously seized upon it. They come to us with their professional and personal challenges and it has been a real privilege to be of use. We continue to be amazed at their talent and naiveté, their hard work and their acceptance of things that we would find intolerable. I have but three classes left to teach, followed by three weeks of presentations by students of their final projects. I think both sides will undergo some withdrawal when we return home/ We had the May Day holiday off and spent a week meditating and working at the Vipassana Center ... read more

Chiling out in Canton... Finally made it to Guangzhou province where my dad & grandparents are from!! Birds eye view of the place was amazing....Guangzhou is thankfully green, with small lakes, water ways, trees and masses of highrises in the city. As usual the people make it. The best part of this leg of the trip has to be spending time with my Uncle Anthony n Aunt Steffi. I havent seen them in 8 years!!!They are incredible people, and Uncle Anth still leaves me in stiches. Funny how the more I get to know him and about life growing up the more I understand about my mum!! Apparently mum your big brother claims you're not as saintly as you claim to be!! Life is tough here. Anthony & Steffi live in a massive residential complex. ... read more

I am officially one year older - I'm finally 24. Those of you who know me may be thinking. "How did you skip a year? We thought you were 23!" But here in China I was 23 when I got here so now I'm 24. However old I may be I am, and always will be, a day older. So what did I do on my birthday? I went and did a bit more shopping - as that's what Hong Kong is best for. But unfortunately I wasn't feeling good for the most of the morning. I checked my e-mail in the morning but haven't really had a chance to respond. I decided to go to Guangzhou even though I didn't feel good as I wanted to be there a day early in case anything bad ... read more

Got up early, Dat-suk’s wife made noodles for breakfast and then we went to the train station. Everyone went to see us off. Almost missed the train to Guangzhou. We went with Yee-ling to see her school at Guangzhou University. Very impressive, large, new, takes up a whole island. She showed us around the part of the campus where she studies and then we had lunch. Got the train back to Kowloon, had dinner at Goo-poh’s. Her sons and family came over and it was Goo-poh’s oldest son’s daughter’s birthday. Went out to Tsim Tsa Tsui, walked around awhile, had a drink at Circle Café and then went to Delaney’s Irish Pub for some Jameson’s. Of course there was a group of Irish girls there that were having a great time and showed everyone their Irish ... read more

Had dim sum with the whole family at the same restaurant as the night before. We made the rounds, visiting each aunt and uncle’s house and her aunt’s small garment factory below her house. We went into Changping town with Felicia’s cousins, Yee-ling and Wai-ling, and hit a couple malls. We had tea at OC Revolving Restaurant, 30 storeys up, and traditional Chinese small fare and sweets at a dessert shop. The whole family had dinner together at the restaurant and went back to Dat-suk’s to visit. Felicia played mahjong with her aunts and uncles.... read more

I'm sitting in the lobby of a five star hotel. No, I'm not staying here - I wouldn't pay that kind of money for a room - I'm simply sitting here. Lobbies like these simply act as resting places for the well dressed. And being white I could walk in here wearing almost anything I liked - besides beggar clothes or my birthday suit. I came in to use the bathroom but I have a whole hour to waste and nothing to really do. Yesterday it rained - all day - and not what I used to call "Chinese rain" that Dalian gets but real hard rain. I went to see Dinghushan and was carrying my umbrella around the whole time. I got sick of carrying my umbrella around the whole time. I got sick of ... read more

Got the bus to the train station and had dim sum with Goo-poh in a nearby restaurant. Took the early afternoon train to Dongguan, China, about an hour's ride. Felicia's Dat-suk (dad's youngest brother) met us at the station and we got a taxi back to his house. He later told Felicia that he wouldn't have recognized her, since it had been over 5 years since the last visit. Luckily, Goo-poh told Dat-suk to look for the tall guailo (white guy, or literally, “ghost guy”). Over the years Felicia’s dad had already got the family used to foreigners because he would bring his kung-fu students to visit. The taxi driver was behind a cage surrounding the driver's area....All the aunts and uncles and most of the cousins came over. We all went to dinner at a ... read more

People running here and there with luggage. Men sitting and simply staring at me with no intent in their eyes of stopping, smells of entire chickens being eaten on a stick, signs flashing here and there "Guangzhou is our home. Come back soon" even though buses are being loaded. Announcements going out almost every second in both Cantonese and English but the roar from the crowd is too loud for me to make out anything aside from "Ladies and Gentlemen. May Ihave your attention please?" Followed by a lot of mumbling. TV screens the size of a normal house TV announcing boarding times and departures. They seem so tiny in this huge hall that all I can do to know whether I'm supposed to leave is continue standing up and showing my ticket every time a ... read more

Sitting here with my feet on top of my shoes. For a person who used to love not wearing shoes at all in this kind of weather it's rough to wear and walk around in sandals all day - not that they're bad shoes. They're some of my best and most comfortable shoes. My hair feels nice on the back of my neck. Paul just took me to get a head massage at the best Salon in Daliang (not to be confused with Dalian as the only difference in spelling is the g in English but the characters are completely different). The massage itself was so relaxing that I fell asleep (or just about) but then afterwards the man who blowdried my hair literally took 4 minutes arranging my topmost hair trying to figure out where ... read more
