After barely sleeping for a few hours, Kate and I decided to go exploring a bit into the main city of Guangzhou. We were to meet her best friend in the downtown area so we headed over to a place. We had a quick lunch and then I learned a few weeks ago that Guangzhou had the largest Line store in the entire world so I had to go. Line is an app that featured characters such as Brown and Cony. Brown! Shortly after, we headed over one of Kate's uncle's restaurant where we had a table of 18 people that consisted of the entire family including all grandma's, aunts, and sisters. Spoiler alert, they were watching me. I also learned that the same uncle also originally opened the first Sam Woo restaurant in SoCal. The ... read more

For the past two days, I learned about why there was a high ranking Tibetan official continuously visiting the compound. I’ll discuss why in a bit. Kate’s father was hosting an awards banquet to celebrate the history of Taishan on the second and third night. Apparently, I learned that China government officials have tried to stop other companies from doing business by delaying permits, interfering with local festivities to stop the promotion of Taishan’s heritage. They do this because the officials may come from another town or village and wants to direct the attention to their hometowns. Her father finally got the permit and with the help of local businesses, will be hosting their first cultural banquet. The second night consisted of dinners with government officials, but I’m just gonna skip all that boring stuff. The ... read more

From my parents house to Kate's parents house, it takes 22 hours door to door. Our morning started at 6AM and we left to get to LAX. After getting to LAX, we checked in at 8:30AM and we had roughly 3 hours to kill before getting boarded at 11:30AM. Before boarding, I told Kate that we probably should eat something and not wait for the airplane food. So get this, before traveling to China, I opted to eat at LAX's Panda Express before going to China. You know, to serve as a benchmark for what I am going to eat over there. ;) We board and for the next 16 hours, I try to keep my sanity. I finally watched Star Wars: The Force Awakens (the 2015 one), and I just wanted to let you know ... read more

The suitcases are getting heavier, there’s a need for some serious strategising before the long haul home, am sure there’s at least a couple pair of shoes surplus to requirement, not mine though, still Hong Kong and a gazillion malls to go, quite glad of the small trolley case to tuck the camera and computer bags into, these thoughts as we trail behind Emma in the vast Shenzhen airport, merely an indication of the shear scale of this whole area. Hamish quote, “you have to find your own bite sized chunk to live in otherwise its overwhelming.” Overwhelming it has been every day. Shenzhen has a population of about 20 million, Dongguan 6 million and Guangzhou 25 million another mega city, you cannot tell where one city ends and another begins, what do you call this. ... read more

Hot and Spicy is Chengdu, they are very proud of the fact that no other region of China can match them. When taken out for the infamous Hot Pot, the really nice people have a section in the boiling cauldron of Chengdu spices, chillies and numbing peppers, that is relatively spice free. Secretly though and I would be no different, they like to watch the snot run, the eyes pop out, the face turn red and the sweat run, by KKs third Hot Pot she was handling it like a local, AAh she’s no fun anymore. A very big favourite is the lamb kebab at the small shop front BBQs and street stalls, it is such a joy to be amongst the full spectrum of Chengdu society, sitting, queuing, young and old, revelling in these tasty, ... read more

I have always wanted to to know more about my roots in China, so I vowed that the day I ever set foot in the country, that I would try and find out more about where I came from. I knew that I still had family in Guangdong province but knew little about exactly where and who they were until I visited my aunt in Kuala Lumpur about four months ago. While in KL, I discovered that on my grandfather's side, that I had relatives living near the town of Kaiping, about three hours from Guangzhou. I was thinking about visiting Kaiping anyway, since there are some unique watchtowers or diaolou in the area that are supposed to be some of the most interesting things to see in China. So when I found out that I ... read more

I've written before about how I glean nostalgia and romance from the old names of colonial Indian cities. The same applies to China. Names such as Peking and Nanking. OK, perhaps not Nanking. But I was now heading to old Canton, now known as Guangzhou. And as you might have guessed, this is why people from Guangdong province and the language they speak is known as Cantonese. Cantonese by blood and one of China's major cities, it would have been remiss of me not to visit the place. Getting there from Macau was pretty straightforward, starting with a free shuttle bus to the mainland Chinese border from the Sofitel across the road from my hotel! Hotel-casinos put on these shuttles for Chinese coming over the border for a flutter in order to get them to flutter ... read more

I have found myself dead center of a swirling vortex of friend-making obstacles. I’m a 41 year old INFJ childfree expat living in a migrant city that is younger than me. Now, three of the five obstacles are by choice. I chose to be childfree. I chose to be an expat. And I chose to live in Shenzhen. But these circumstances have had consequences. Currently, if it’s 9pm and I’d like to go hang out and have a drink with a friend, I don’t have anyone that I can call. Zip. Zilch. No one. Now, before I complain, I’d like to praise. I have amazing friends. I have childhood friends that are as close to me as family. I have a very close friend in Shenzhen (you know who you are and you know I love ... read more

Thursday the 28th July. The last day of term, my last teaching day in China. At 9a.m. one of the Chinese teachers came to the foreign teacher’s staff room and told us that our ten o'clock lesson was cancelled as the whole school is having a water fight. She tells us we can join in if we'd like to. As none of us had known about this no one had any spare clothes or anything that could be used as ‘a weapon’ in a water battle. I asked one of the Chinese teachers that I knew lived on site if she had anything I could borrow and she lent me a dress. I found a bucket and I was ready for battle! The children loved it and for over an hour we ran around the playground ... read more
