As a few of you have been quick to point out, my blogs vanished sometime last week. But to all my critics out there, aka Rachel and Olivia, haters gonna hate. Also, because I make all the rules here, I’m skipping the Owyeung village blog because that one is super long and I need to get a blog post up. More to come on that one. So pretend it’s Monday of last week, the day after the Owyeung village visit. Today, Monday, we visited another village. There was a camera crew waiting for us on arrival. Mom, the resident ginger, got off the bus and the cameras just loved her. She started talking to this Chinese woman and telling her all of our family secrets and stories, before realizing she was a reporter. Before that realization, ... read more

Today was mostly spent traveling and eating. I was exhausted and tried to sleep for most of the day on the bus, but my parents sat in the row behind me and every time I’d start to fall asleep, one of them would poke me. Mom was trying to translate Chinese to English, and was texting Olivia in New York and then trying to get me to read it, and Dad kept poking me on the head every time we passed a Starbucks or KFC’s or McDonald’s (and there’s a lot). Then Mom started poking me to see if was sleeping, then to ask if I was sleeping. I had just fallen asleep again when Dad hit me in the eye with a can of Chicken Wing flavored Pringles. I was a little grumpy at this ... read more

Breakfast was at 6:30 this morning. Hanging out with older people sure is tiring. When are you supposed to sleep? Mom still wasn’t at 100%, so Dad and I walked with the group to a backstreet that reminded me of my time in Shanghai except this street was much cleaner. We went to a fun place. Fun = noodles, though it was fun to see them make the fun (see what I did there). My Mandarin is slowly but surely coming back, and I was able to order breakfast for both Dad and I (and pay for it). Don’t say I never buy you nice things Dad, even if it was $1 US for both of us to eat. After breakfast, it was time for second breakfast (I told you Rachel, all we do is eat). ... read more

I've solved the Genghis Khan mystery! Today on the bus, my mom let me sit next to her (because I have all the drugs and she was still feeling a little sick), and we were talking about who my real father could be. But then, I looked at her arm, and it turns out she's the one who has the Genghis Khan roots! Either she has some Native American blood stemming from those who walked across the land bridge during the last ice age, or we're about to find out on this trip that gingers come from China. Or maybe this whole legend thing is not real. I think it's the land bridge hypothesis though. The first village today was Karen's mom's village (not my mom, my grandmother's village on my mom's side is in Pennsylvania). ... read more

Today I made quite the discovery. I am a descendant of Genghis Khan. Interestingly, my dad and my two aunts are not. So who is my father? We began today with yet another battle with the breakfast bouncers not wanting to give us breakfast for three. Between my dad's Cantonese and my Mandarin, we managed to smuggle the three of us inside. Seems like it's going to be a daily battle for some watery coffee and stale toast. Our first day of "rooting" began today. Each day, we go into someone's ancestral village, where we meet with the village elders and local government. If all goes well, they help find the ancestral house, as well as any relatives that may still be in the village. This morning, we started with Phil's (a fellow rooter) paternal grandfather's ... read more

The first reviews are in for comeback blog #1, and early indications sound like the sequel is never as good as the original. Olivia said I lost my wit, Rachel said I didn’t mention that I had a second dog (shout out to Biscuit) and Mom said the whole blog was “flat”. When I asked her how “flat”, she said, “it just wasn’t as funny as what you used to write, but don’t ask me if you don’t want the truth”. Tough crowd. I won’t be discouraged though by all the critics because great writers are never recognized for their brilliance and superb writing during their lifetime. And my blogs are like Game of Thrones—the first couple episodes are to set up the rest for an outstanding season. Today was the official start to our 2 ... read more

I'm baa-aaack! Back by popular demand, for three weeks only, I'm bringing you my travel blog as I travel through southern China in search of the Owyeung village. And by popular demand, I mean my uncle requested it. Gotta keep the fans happy. He's currently dog sitting for me for three weeks, and I have a pretty stupid dog (but very cute!), so this is the least I could do. And I also am hoping this puts me in good favor for being allowed back in our college football fantasy league next year, because TBH I've forgotten to select all my weekly picks every single time. My excuse is Stockholm Syndrome. In the past six years since I last blogged, I've graduated from Babson (they made me stop studying abroad to graduate, can you believe it?), ... read more

Hey guys, So after Macau and Hong Kong and Immigration, we were pretty wrecked yesterday, so we just stayed in bed till lunchtime, then had lunch, then had dinner, then went back to bed, so that explains the absence of a blog. Today was vaguely more interesting though, although I think we slept for the same amount of time...We were hoping to go to a tea market to check it out today so we were taken to one a couple of blocks from where we are staying, we made it to the second floor, I'm not sure if it went any higher but it's, as you can probably imagine, filled with tea. That's one thing I really love about China, everything is sold in clumps, like when we went to Dafen the other day, all the ... read more

Good Evening (Morning)! I recently noticed that we have been posting our explorations on facebook more than my travel blog (So I am going to back track as well). ———— This week we are on National Holiday Break. In the Republic of China, the autumn harvest moon is celebrated on the Full Moon of the Eighth Lunar Month. That happened to be last Monday. Consequently, the moon doesn’t like to always be accurate, so they made the first week of October the National Week. So What Does That Mean For Us? That means, a full week off to do absolutely whatever we want. No work (HOORAY!) I’m sorry. I’m giving this explanation after the first Day of National Week when we went to Dafen Oil Painting Village. (See that thread, I will post that later. Cause ... read more

This week marks China’s National Week, a week long celebration of The Republic of China. Our first year here, so why not embrace all that this beautiful country has to offer? Monday was the official start of the holiday week, very similar to the USA’s Labor Day. Most businesses and all government offices were closed. Our day started rather lazy American-ish. We woke around 10am, had a very American breakfast (egg white omelette and fruit) and went to the gym. Thinking we were much closer, we thought we would go to Huaxing Temple. After a lot of research, it was determined that we would go another day. Instead, we hit another local spot / not-so tourist tourist trap: The Dafen Oil Painting Village ————— After wandering around the metro of Dafen, ignoring the multiple KFCs, McDonalds, ... read more
