In Thamel, Kathmandu
I bet you didn't know the original Wal-Mart was here! We were supposed to fly back to Kathmandu around 9:20AM. Rather than hang out at Hotel Yeti, we decided we would skip breakfast and go to the airport around 8:00AM which was early. In Nepal, 45 minutes is enough time to arrive before a domestic flight. When we checked in, they said our flight would be delayed 30 minutes. No problem.
At 1:00PM, we were still in the Pokhara airport. Our frustration was visible, especially Megan's. This was her last day in Nepal. I at least had all day tomorrow. Our flight had a mechanical problem. No one bothered to update us. No information was provided. No announcements were made. This is the way in Nepal. So we waited. Our flight finally arrived around 1:30 and we made the short 45 min flight to Kathmandu. Nabin took the bus this morning at 7AM and arrived before we did.
Once we got back, we went to the hotel and then got some food. We were starving. No breakfast and waiting 5 hours in an airport did not agree with us. After we ate we felt better and it was time to shop. I wanted to shop with Megan because she
Rabi
Tour organizer extraordinaire. www.adventurediscoverytreks.com can bargain! I can, but I tend to give in too easily. We got some great deals. I bought a North Face Gortex coat with detachable fleece for about 30USD and some gorgeous paper lanterns and we both got handmade meditation bowls - fairly big ones - for about 40USD each. I don't know if any of that was a good deal, but we thought it was.
For dinner, Rabi took us to a Nepali restaurant where they have a show of traditional Nepali dance. Neither of us is really into this kind of place, but it was interesting. We didn't realize this was included in the package we booked. We had a dinner of momo and soup and dal baht. Because we ate lunch so late, neither of us was very hungry, but I felt like I should at least try everything. The food was good, the beer was good, and the show was good.
Afterwards we went back to the hotel to pack all the stuff we bought. My bag was a lot heavier than it was when I arrived!
The next morning we took Megan to the airport after she and I had breakfast at our usual spot. We said goodbye at the airport, and I had no plans for the rest of the day. Didn't really want to shop anymore since I really couldn't carry anything else. So Rabi and I decided to go have coffee at his 'local' coffee house. Then he invited me to his house for lunch again. How nice! His sister-in-law had dal baht ready for us and it was just as good as it was the first time. After lunch I went back to Rabi's office with him so he could show me some info on the Chitwan National Park tour his company offers.
I didn't feel like doing much today, so the rest of the day was spent relaxing and writing and reading and having more coffee. Before I knew it, it was time to go to the airport. Again. I feel like we went to the airport about 10 times on this trip. It was actually only 8 times for me, including Pokhara. Tradition is that the guest to Nepal receives a white scarf when leaving Nepal, unlike Tibet where the guest receives one on arrival. Rabi gave me a white scarf and I sadly said goodbye to Nepal. I wasn't feeling the need to leave this country like I usually do on my last day of a trip.
