What are the 'inexpensive ones like?"

This is my first backpacking trip and planning to use as inexpensive accommodations as we can. (Under 150dh). What are the locking devices/doors like in some of these places? Are the windows readily accessible to people wishing to enter if you are on the ground level? I'm just trying to get a bit of an understanding because I haven't seen many photos of the lower end places in my searches and have been looking for the info with no answer to my questions.

As for travel I am not traveling with much other than clothes and a couple cameras, but I would like to rest assured that I can leave my pack in the room and not have it looted.

thanks! Reply to this

Hello Lanegra 😊

When I was in Kenya and Uganda the cheap hotel rooms were very basic and generally did not have attached bathrooms but they did have good locks on the doors. In many I could bolt the door on the inside for when I was sleeping. Having said that I would not leave anything valuable in the room such as a camrea. Hotel staff go in there to clean and I dont think the rooms are so secure that they could not be broken into.

I was also in Egypt but cant actually remember what the security was like there. The rooms could at least be locked but hotel staff could go in there.

Some hotel room windows have bars on them in Africa.

I advise u to ask to see the room before u check in. Then choose one that is does not have a window that can be climbed up to and that all windows that open onto the hall of the hotel can be closed securely.

I stayed in a couple of cheap hotel rooms in Kenya that looked like prison cells. No windows and doors were metal plated and lockable by padlock from both the outside and inside. Not pleasant rooms but maybe the best types of cheap rooms to look for if security is your priority.

Btw I am going to being the cameras with me when I leave so I can take pictures. 😉

I also don't expect more than four walls, a socket, cot, door and a window. I'm not concerned with personal security, just that i will have my clothes which I doubt will all get stolen, I'm not a flashy character but you never know. Look the Giants won the sucperbowl.. how the hell. Thanks!
