Female traveling alone and looking for some advice

Hey there,

I'm thinking about traveling solo to Morocco this July for about 3 weeks. I've traveled alone before, within Africa as well, but I just wanted to know what the backpacker's circuit is like in Morocco, how traveling alone in Morocco is, etc. Any suggestions, experiences, etc. would be great!!! Is 3 weeks too long? (i.e. could i go to Algeria, W. Sahara?) Also, is traveling given the weather in July just a bad idea?

Help!

Thanks! Reply to this

Hey,
This wont be very helpful to you, but I am also a female trying to plan a trip to Morocco and Egypt this summer and I too will be traveling alone. I have just begun trying to plan the travel details, and hence, I came upon your post. Anyway, if I get any information about your question I will pass it along - also, I guess its possible that we could pair up, if you would be looking for safety in numbers. That may be useful - especially given the responses you have gotten to your question so far, haha!

Hello SBSBSB and FNmorfes 😊

LOL FNmorfes :D I am laughing about the comment u made about the responses so far. Think of these as a preview of your trip.
I travelled alone in Egypt. Yeah, travelling with another woman is a good idea because that will be seen as ''less modern'' even though it is not absolutely necessary.
Here are some other suggestions for both of u that I would give to any woman travelling in Egypt(maybe the same applies for Morocco. I have not been there yet)

Wear loose, long-flowing clothes, that are non-transparent and that cover your legs and arms. Carry a scarf so that you can cover your hair with it if a man tries to get too familiar with you or too physically close to you. Wearing a headscarf will be seen as a symbol of respectability.
Don't let any man touch you in any way.
Always sit next to women if you can.
If you want to go to a hair dresser, go to a female one.
Don't smoke cigarettes in public, even if somebody offers you one. This gives the wrong impression. It is OK to smoke water pipes in the cafés, even though there are usually no women in there. It will amuse people to see you doing it, but it is generally acceptable.
Don't be seen drinking alcohol by any Egyptian person.
If a man is bothering you, move towards older Egyptian women. They will look after you if they see what is happening.
Don't allow any man, even a fellow traveller, into your room, even if you leave the door open. This will upset the hotel staff, and give them the impression that you have bad morals.

Hi Morocco feels very safe and friendly for a female traveller, I didn't encounter any problems (of course this could be luck) and if you are used to travelling along and follow sensible advice (like Mell's) you will be fine, Morocco is much less pressure than Egypt. The Atlas Mountains are incredible and casbar too. I also did the obligatory camel ride and camp out in the sahara! I would look at tourist routes in lonely planet and also get ideas from company tours. i didnt do any coastal areas, but i think there are great posh hotels with wellness spas for not too expensive if you want to treat yourself to R+R at the end of your trip.
Public transport and road networks were safe and good as far as I saw and people speak French all over.
Food (tagines mostly) is wholesome and I didnt have any cause for concern, mostly vegetarian.

Marrakech is great but of course be prudent in the sook, as in any other crowded place. Take an extra suitcase for all the junk you will buy!!
hope this helps.

Hello Michael. 😊

I suggest you get a Lonely Planet Guide for Morocco. They cost around 30 Euros and are available in most bookshops around the world.
It will have good general information about accomodation, entertainment, money, safety.....

Hi,

Morocco is a wonderful country. I went last summer for 2 weeks alone, and never had any problems whatsoever. Everybody is polite and more than willing to help you if you have questions or anything like that. Brush up on your Arabic and/or Tamazight 😊 (depending on where you are travelling). The arif is amazing. I am returning this September for Ramadan. There is nothing like it in the world :D Just enjoy :D (and i notice a post about modest clothing....this truly is a must, but not only during Ramadan. a safe rule: if anything other than your feet, face, and hands are showing, it is too revealing. and if you can observe your shape through your clothing, then your clothes are too tight. just some friendly advice :D:D:D) The culture is incredible, and the country is beautiful. Have a wonderful trip! Oh yeah.....don't shake hands with guys when you meet them.....the touching thing....yeah...it's a big fat no-no. It's a respect thing. Unless you are married to him 😊 hee hee ...then you can hold hands and it's fine.

hi!
I went to Morocco with a few friends in June last year ( in particular; fes, rababt, casablanca and marrakech). Firstly, the weather in June was HOT! but its manageable hot. You probably know this but always wear clothes that covers your shoulders and knees and pack a scarf so you can go into some mosques etc. Also, its a good idea to wear a scarf or hat on your head if you have blond hair to avoid the extra unwanted attention from males. Also, as said a couple of other people, avoid any form of physical contact from strangers. hotel staff etc are fine.
Another thing is watch what you eat as I know quite a few people who went to Morocco and got food poisoning. Drink bottled water and well cooked food etc.
all in all, Morocco is a beautiful country. Take extra film/memory cards for your camera because you'll end up taking hundreds of photos!

hope this helps!
