Staying in a hostel whilst working, good idea?

Whilst working abroad, is it a good/bad idea to reside in a hostel?

Later on this year, i will (fingers crossed) be heading to Sydney to work for 3-12 months.

I would ideally like to stay in a hostel for two main reasons.

1) The cost; Hostels are a very cheap source of accommodation and can help me save for further travels.

2) Socially; they are a good means of meeting people and making friends.

Would anyone recommend staying in a hostel for a long period of time if i was to be working as well?

Or would it be beneficial if i were too look for other means apart from a hostel.

Cheers, bigboysi :D Reply to this

Hello Bigboysi 😊

Staying in a hostel while working is something I only do when I dont have someplace else to live.
It is generally more expensive then living in a shared house or appartment.
The only way that it would be economically good is if u manage to stay at the hostel for free. One of my friends is doing that at a hostel because after staying there so often they asked him to be the caretaker. I think he also has another job outside the hostel to earn some money.
But certainly look for someplace else to live. Hostels are cheaper than many other forms of accomodation while travelling but are not the cheapest place to live in longterm. Also look out for jobs which include free accomodation.
If u want to socialise u will meet plenty of people at work and in bars, and if u for example joined a bush walking club or something else.

#2 - yep - but it also gets a little depressing if they all move on and you're staying.

I think it's a good stop gap - especially if the work you get is casual - no hassles if you need to move on at short notice.

Though quite a few hostels won't let people stay more than a fortnight... I remember one hostel in LA where most of the inhabitants were long termers looking for work in the movie industry getting poorer and poorer while they spent their money on head shots and watched dreams fade... it had a sad atmosphere.

That makes a lot of sense - work a shift a day on the desk or cleaning or something - usually the way it works! Reply to this
