Ways I kept in touch with friends and family.

1. Travelblog Diary

2. Email

3. MSN Messenger

4. Prepaid Phone Cards - each country has some form of scheme where calls overseas can be made cheaply. Usually involve a special number to dial and your own account code. (Can often be cheaper than those given by the local landline phone companies to the people who live there!!!)

Hi there, I found email great but i missed hearing people's voices...I travel a lot-I’m heading off for France next week and after spending a fortune on my mobile every time I go away, I’ve bought this SIM card called GO-SIM which gives me free incoming calls and when I make outgoing calls, it only charges me at local rate. They do single destination ones for loads of countries but they also do a global SIM if you go to more than one place-worth checking it out! Reply to this

Had a look into this, sounds useful - basically just a more up to date version of the old phone card and telephone box routine 😊

How can you tell if your own mobile is compatible with the Sim cards? The site I can find which sells them mentions 'GSM mobiles'.

Do you know what the GSM stands for? Are they just unlocked mobile phones?

How much did calls cost for those who called you?

(Not that that really matters to the hard-up, empty-pocketed traveller :P) Reply to this

Found the Go-Sim site. Answers most of my questions above in their FAQ pages... Should've looked around a bit more... Reply to this
