Advice on road trip needed

Hi all,

October 1st I am planning to land in LA and stay in Santa Monica (2 people), is that a good move or a bad move?

Few days later hopefully take car and head for Vegas, but it would be great if we could have a cool stopver somewhere - any ghost towns or small quaint towns I could stop in?

I have 5 days in vegas, and then I have 7 days free with a car before I need to get back to LAX, I could really do with some advice here.
Is it worth heading for San diego?
Shall I head to San Francisco instead?
Palm Springs?
Any other states I could head for easily enough?

There will be 2 drivers, and we are both novices at this.

ANy advice truly appreciated, and those who need any advice on Ireland let me know straight away,
