Hello, I will be backpacking for about 5 months, in a range of nicer areas to slightly sketchier areas. I just wanted to know from others' experiences-is it better to bring a lock for your pack or does that just attract trouble? I dont want carry every valuable on me every time I leave the hostel! Hi Alissa,

I always take a couple with me (combination not key). Look for hostels which have lockers in the dorms (you'll need to provide the lock probably) or ask about a hostel safe.

Hope that helps.

I always assumed that if someone really wants in your bag, they just have to cut it open, so locks don't do much I imagine. Reply to this

They could discourage an opportunist. On the other hand, some argue that having a lock on your pack advertises that you have something of value in there.

Either way, I use one. Reply to this
