I'm very interested in going to Africa, but think I'm probably best going on a tour, especially since I'm new to the whole backpacking thing...
Can anyone recommend any tour companies they've used?
I came across a place called Economic Expeditions (http://www.economicexpeditions.com/home.html) on the TNT website, and am quite interested Nairobi to Capetown trip, so something along those lines would be great :o)
Thanks

If you wish to travel to East Africa, I recommend you use www.luckytourssafaris.com /

Reply to this Hi!
I can suggest that you contact Laris Safaris Ltd. Have a look at their website, www.larisafaris.com.
Me myself had a very nice time with Israel (one of their guides) during last christmas when I was on safari in Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro, Serengeti and Tarangire NP. Hope you find my tip good!
Greetings, Andreas

All the best Reply to this I suggest you fly strsight to Nairobi then visit these companies and arrange the trip. It helps because you can negotiate and you can avoid long poorly planned or well-organised but too long itinerary. Flying stright on your own to Naiorbi is safe and easy and by so doing you save 500 straight away. You may enough end up going soth by bus and old trains which is a very good experience and will leave you 1000 3 richer. ie Go to Tsavo/Maasai Mara fron Nairobi on your own, take a bus to Tanzania. Take train south to Malawi-Zambia, Botwana-Soth Africa all for a $ 1000. Pato

bye Reply to this Hey folks, I thought I should inform those of you who have a special interest in Eastern Africa that a very important international conference- The 2006 United Nations Climate Change is being held in Nairobi this week- The Conference in Nairobi, according to experts, will provide fertile ground to tackle climate change effectively while ensuring sustainable development for the future.
cheers,
Patrick
Reply to this Hey folks a short story from East Africa. Those of you who have traveled by rail in Kenya might be interested to know that their horrindous experience might be a thing of the past. Kenya Railways, formerly East Africa Railways-it was famously refered to as the Lunatic Express- is a line 1930 km long, was built between 1896 and 1901 at a great cost. Workers got killed by lions at Tsavo and mysterious diseases took their toll. But they managed to link the coast and the hinterland-Mombsas to Kisumu. It is dilapidated and can be seen belching smoke up the Rift Valley every day. Now it has been privetised and as from this month, its mordanisation begins.
I look forward to taking a trip in December.
Patrick
Reply to this I recommend Contiki - they are specialized in Africa. Nice site, friendly and good service. But who opened this topic might have gone and come back from Africa by this time.. Oh, it was a year ago 😊 Anyway, I recommend Contiki for you, who read this.

Reply to this I recommend these two companies for any safaris to Kenya: www.breakawayafrica.com and www.bridgewayssafaris.com.
Check these out.
Reply to this Heres yet another. www.unmappedafrica.com. These guys seem to have a knack for places-youve-never-been-beyond-your-wildest-dreams. Lots of info, local knowledge, customised safaris. I think they are simply great! I totally recommend them.
Reply to this Hey MarkSteeleNZ,
Another option you might consider is volunteering. Its a great way to see a certain part of the country, get involved and meet other travellers. It also works as part of a tour where you can stop off for a couple of weeks or a month before moving on. I have a company that offers volunteering in the Garden Route (east cape) of South Africa, have a look at www.theconservationco.com for more information. If you were looking for other areas in South Africa then try www.gvi.co.uk or www.earthwatch.org who offer volunteering in different regions of Africa and have great travel and conservation ethics.
