Will I have to be able to load my camera's software on to the computer to be able to download the pictures to the computer using the USB cable?

Hi Keith - going to add this to the Travel Guide soon - very common concern and question.

The simplest and best way to get photos onto your travelblog is:

1) go to a photo shop that advertises digital services - very common now fortunately. Get 2 CDs burnt from your memory card - use new CDs. Check the CDs - see if the files are readable.

2) Send one of the CDs home asap. You can now delete the photos from your camera.

3) Take the other CD to an internet cafe, and add the photos as required. Keep it safe in your pack in a case.

===

The drawback to this method is that photos tend to be added after the event - eg. when your memory card is full.

Some internet cafes - not all - will allow you to connect your camera directly to the PC and upload as you go - if the PC is running Windows XP - it will usually show the camera as an external hard drive - without the software installation - and you can browse and upload as needed.

Some internet cafes - will not even let you put a CD into the computer - let them know why you are leaving and go somewhere else 😊

Lots of variations on these themes - PHD (portable harddisks) and portable burners, Laptops can make things easier... but unless you're a serious photographer probably not worth the extra weight and cost.

Will I have to be able to load my camera's software on to the computer to be able to download the pictures to the computer using the USB cable?

Only in some cases - most of the time if you're allowed to connect the camera Windows XP will detect your camera automatically.

Please note that travelblog doesn't store the original photos - only resized smaller versions - so make sure you backup your photos as you travel.

My question is, not about the photos but how do I keep my camera battery continuously charged without having to seek out a local power plug adapter for the UK plug the charger has!? I have a Canon EOS30D Digital SLR. Any thoughts?

I have heard of Canon releasing battery packs for EOS cameras that are powered by AA batteries but I cant find them for my model camera anywhere Reply to this
